athena jones is in washington. what else did we learn from the president last night?porter: good morning. i should mention at the white house the flags are still flying at half staff and pennsylvania avenue in front of the white house is still shut down to the public. i can tell you that the president was closely monitoring all of the events as they unfolded in boston yesterday, getting regular updates and i believe we have a photo of the president speaking with lisa monaco, she's his assistant for homeland security and counterterrorism and she gave him this update after that second suspect was captured last night. in speaking to reporters last night the president continued to offer some of the words of comfort we've been hearing from him all week to the city of boston and to victims, but he also talked about next steps. let's listen to what he had to say there. >> i've instructed the fbi and the department of homeland security and our intelligence community to continue to deploy all the necessary resources to support the investigation, to collect intelligence, and to

athena jones at the white house this morning. what else did we hear from the president? >> reporter: good morning, john and christine. in the days since the bombing in boston we heard words of comfort to the victims and to the city of boston. late last night in a statement he offered words of comfort and he answered questions many of the people following the story have been asking. >> tonight there are still many unanswered questions. among them, why did young men that grew up and studied here as part of our communities and our country resort to such violence? how did they plan and carry out these attacks? did they receive any help? the families of those killed so senselessly deserve answers. the wounded, some of whom now have to learn how to stand and walk and live again deserve answers. >> the president also said the investigation into this continues to try and get some of those answers. he directed the fbi and the department of homeland security to deploy all necessary resources to get to the bottom of this. >> and i know the fbi director robert mueller had a statemen

let's bring in athena jones now from washington. athena, what did kerry accomplish on this trip? good morning, alison. well, after secretary kerry's meetings in china he came out with some pretty positive language. he said both the u.s. and china are committed to resolving this situation with north korea peacefully, that both countries want to work toward a peaceful denuclearization of the korean peninsula and both calling on pyongyang to not take any provocative steps that could further destabilize the region. this is important because the u.s. sees china as north korea's main ally in the region. and there's been concern that china isn't really using its influence to get kim jong-un to stop this, to dial back i should say, this bellicose rhetoric, this warlike rhetoric we've been hearing. when kerry arrived in japan he met with the japanese foreign minister and talked about what the u.s. and allies and china how they want to see the situation resolved. let's listen to that. >> we would hope that whatever considerations or fears north has of the united states or of others in the

athena jones has more from washington. >> reporter: attorney general eric holder under fire from republicans for agreeing to a judge's decision to read the boston bombing suspect his miranda rights. dzhokhar has since clammed up. valuable sfogs out of reach. speaking to cnn holder answered that for the first time at white house correspondents dinner. >> the decision to mirandize him is one that the magistrate and totally consistent with the laws that we have. we had a two-day period we were able to question him under the public safety exception. i think everyone was done appropriately and we got leads. >> reporter: republican party king shooting back saying investigators may never find out whether others were involved and how the brothers became radicalized. >> the fact is that the fbi was only 16 hours into an i interrogation and got buto much more was -- still not there. eric holder now is saying he approved the interrogation being stopped is disgraceful because that interrogation could have ended up saving many american lives. we don't know what full consequences will be. >> reporter: kin

athena jones joining us from washington this morning. good morning. talk to me about what more we know about that decision to read those miranda rights to dzhokhar tsarnaev when that happened. >> reporter: good morning, poppy. well we know that congressman rogers certainly wants to know more about the decision leading up to those rights being read because we know the suspect has become a lot less talkative after hearing those miranda rights. certainly he led investigators to look for the laptop, we learned from the suspect about the plans to go to new york but since he was read his rights he's gotten a lot less talkative and congressman rogers has written a letter to eric holder demanding a full accounting of the decision leading up to the initial appearance with the judge including who decided that appearance should take place at that specific place and time during this questioning and whether the department of justice or the fbi expressed any concerns about the timing of this and concerns about the fact that the suspect would now be read his miranda

athena jones is covering this for us and has the details. >> reporter: the rnc is fired up about plannedoversial testimony from a planned parenthood group in florida. the republican national committee chief vs. the media. party chair reince priebus says most major news outlets ignored what this woman said about whether a doctor should save the life of a baby born alive during a failed abortion. >> we believe any decision made should be left up to the family -- to the woman, family, and physician. >> reporter: the lobbyist for planned parenthood was testifying last week before a panel of florida lawmakers about a bill that would affect laws governing abortions when she said this. >> you stated that the baby born on a table is a result of a botched abortion that that decision should be left to the doctor and the family is that what you're saying? >> that decision should be between the patient and the health care provider. >> i think at that point the patient would be the child struggling on the table, wouldn't you agree? >> that is a very good question. i really don't know how to answer th

athena jones has more details on what that conversation was about and what it may mean to investigators with an uncle of the suspects. you may remember him as the uncle we heard from first on friday when he came outside of his house and spoke to the reporters gathered there. he gave a long, emotional, sometimes angry remarks about having heard -- learned of this bombing and learned that his brother's children were involved. now, at the time he told us he told the reporters gathered there he hadn't spoken to his brother, the father of tamerlan and dzhokhar. he hadn't spoken to him in three months. well, he lives just outside of washington, d.c. in a maryland suburb, and he told me he heard from his brother three days ago. it was a brief conversation. he seemed frustrated and a bit agitated in recalling it to me. he said his brother had been asking about a lawyer. we don't know what came out of it in the end, but he told me he was frustrated hearing this from his brother. he expected his brother to be on a plane traveling to the u.s. and not on the phone with him. we know now he has spoke
