this happened on oakland avenue near motor parkway about 2:00 this morning. the victim's arm, again, nearly severed. he's air lifted to the hospital after he was attacked. jewelry, cell phone, and cash. the second victim suffered a puncture in the arm by that same weapon, a large knife.

this happened at the 1700 block of weeks avenue. eyewitness news reporter dray clark is live now in the mount hope section. >> reporter: good morning, lori. investigators are still here on the scene inside the apartment where the fire happened going over the fire damage in hopes of finding a cause. police still have not released the name of the elderly man who lived inside the apartment and later died. the first call for help came mount hope section of the bronx. when firefighters arrived and rushed into the apartment, there was heavy smoke but light flames. inside the apartment they found the elderly man on the living room floor with burns, and they say he was in full cardiac arrest. despite efforts to save his life that man was pronounced dead at bronx lebanon hospital. firefighters were able to contain the fire to that first floor apartment. however, a next door neighbor did suffer smoke inhalation, but that neighbor is expected to be okay. as for a cause for the fire, that of course remains under investigation. we're live in the

this stretch of 13th avenue still blocked off this morning. i just spoke with the fire department about 15 muns ago. they told me that investigators will be back out here at the scene once the sun comes up. this is what firefighters saw when they first arrived on the scene. flames and thick plumes of smoke. now, the cause of this deadly explosion is still under investigation, but the fire department is exploring the possibility that it might have been sparked by tenants who disconnected their stove because they wanted to take it with them as they were moving out. first responders found a woman in the second floor stairwell. this morning officials are still working to identify her. her neighbors tell news 4 she was very cordial, warm, and friendly. >> i would visit her sometimes in her house because of her dog. she would always be so nice. >> that was too scary. the fire -- the sky was dark. >> reporter: a father and his 10-year-old son who were walking down 13th avenue were hurt by some of the falling debris. a 27-year-old man was also hurt. t

it happened on oakland avenue in central islip overnight. katherine creag is there. >> reporter: good morning. there are still detectives here on the scene. a gruesome scene. in fact, the victim apparently suffered such an awful injury to his hand that he bled and there's still blood on the street here. oakland avenue is where we are. we want to show you video. all of this happening after 2:00 this morning. there was some kind of robbery or at least an attempted robbery, according to law enforcement sources. the victim, again on oakland avenue near motor parkway, was proached by a thief. the suspect had a large knife, possibly a machete, and used it to attack the victim. the victim's hand was almost severed. we're learning that victim was air lifted to a hospital because his injuries swore severe. it's unknown what was taken or stolen, if anything. there is a detective out here on the scene. as you said earlier, darlene, they are looking for clues, anything else that could lead them to the suspect. again, the thief, this attempted robbery or
