euathis is part of the initiatie with a club house we opened last summer, balboa park, which is under construction. this has been a remarkable public-private partnership. it is evenly split between private and public funding. we raised nearly $8 million, and public funds included considerable funding from the city of san francisco including $500,000 in community improvement bonds and considerable funding from the state of california as well. i want to acknowledge the san francisco initiative represents only a fraction of our work together. we have been working to build this, and that work has led to the city earning the title of no. 1 park system, in the 40 biggest cities in the country thanks to our efforts that were announced a few weeks ago, and even as strong as our partnership has been in the past, i want to acknowledge that our future looks even bigger still. we are eager to continue our work and a partnership, whether it be for a land acquisitions and continuing finance efforts, to raise support in san francisco or design and construction work. we continue to work to make sure

there have been renovations at balboa park and we're very excited about all the opportunities. we are also very excited to finally address longstanding problem that larsen park where there has not been any adequate playground for many years. we have some funding to continue our work with irrigation. this is important for water savings and it is a staff of efficiency measure. our irrigation systems, many of which are 70 years old or older. two-thirds of our system is operated on manual irrigation. when they break, it costs money and time. frankly, we want to move from manual watering to automated irrigation so we no longer have to have our precious few gardeners holding a host they attach manually from quick coupler to quick coupler. we're happy about that and we have some need to do court resurfacing. you asked for information on two specific issues one is job creation. we are particularly proud about this. we talked a lot about our apprenticeship program. we hire kids during the summer. i know the learning celebration is going on right now but we hired over 200 kids to be junio

along balboa park station, geneva, san jose, pushing hard to get a ramp for pedestrians. right now, it is dangerous to cross the street, especially if you are pushing a stroller or are in a wheelchair. you have to go further than you but typically have to. there is so much more to do. we have to figure out how to calm the traffic. a lot of cars, speeding through and make it unsafe for pedestrians. sidewalks are not very convenient for people. it takes a lot of money to do that, but it is really about being vigilant and looking at the fund the come through the transportation authority. we have been extending sidewalks in some places to help with pedestrians, trying to put in islands, plantings to slow down traffic. bike lanes have helped. a bit controversial where i live is a bike lane. people do not see as many bikes, but we are seeing more and more common now that the bike lanes are coming in. that makes it safer for pedestrians. we have a bike way on a major street. you do not have as much time to cross, and you cut down one lane for the cars and a pedestrian can then w

these are areas such as some parts of the eastern neighborhoods, market octavia, i think balboa park, and the mixed use districts in eastern neighborhoods. so all these areas have had density limits removed. another concern is that rto and of those areas, increased units are allowed so long as the building envelope is not increased. so when we say that there should not be too much concern about density, well, we have not seen the full impact of these changes. [bell rings] i think that is what the planning review is absolutely necessary. and one of the other issues is that we're concerned that this type of housing may be a method for the city or developers tone expense of family sized housing. that has not been address. we have concerns about this. thank you. supervisor wiener: is the coalition for san francisco neighborhoods in opposition to the regional arena goals? >> i think the issue is that the housing element says in their data, the finding analysis, that we need a certain type of housing and certain types of jobs developed. yes, what is being developed is, for the most part, 85
