lee knew that the 18th corps under baldy smith was coming this way. who had helped guard this -- has made this excursion through cold harbor, asked for reinforcements. they're sent reinforcements in the form of fitshugh lee's cavalry division. lee, again, urges that hoke and his men from richmond hurry up. the cavalry commander realize the importance of taking cold harbor intersection. general custer talks it through with his commander, general torbert and they launch an attack against old cold harbor. fitshugh lee is ultimately routed along with a group of north carolina boys. almost exactly 24 hours. and 150 years ago. to this moment, if we were here at the spot where we are right now, we'd have union cavalries at old cold harbor. forming pretty much where we are. sunrise on june 1. the head of anderson first corps starts to march down into this area. it reaches an area known as the allison house. you'll see it on the old maps. anderson decides that he's going to launch a two-pronged reconnaissance toward old cold harbor, hopefully take the place. g

if you're not familiar with mount baldy, this is east and north of los angeles, very popular hiking spot. this is the highest peak in that range. it's just over 10,000 feet. when you get the heavy rain pouring down and then all of that if you know themes as it comes into the valleys, that is really the situation for the landslides and mudslides. you can pick out a little bit of it spinning in the atmosphere. not only have we had the monsoon flow, but that's enhancing it, bringing a little bit of it into california where we really need the rain, because over 60% or just about 60% of the state is an exceptional drought, the highest level of all the state is in a drought. we have the juxtaposition where you see the green and these areas in the pink where we're under different fire dangers. more of that moisture could come into california, so watch that in the terrain. at least some of this is piking it into the exceptional drought area. there is a benefit, you just have to be very careful out there. >> we want to take you live to england. prince harry on hand for a dedication that is the me

vehicle and the coroner's office said he likely drowned from the mud flow that happened here in mount baldy. a lot of people caught off guard. they didn't realize the intensity of the storm that moved through the area. flash floods hit campgrounds in a section of the national forest, torrential downpour. family five and their dog had to be rescued by helicopter. fortunately they're doing okay. but back out here live. as we drove up here this morning, we saw bolders on the side of the road. we saw large pools of mud across the highway here. so this is just some of of the conditions people are dealing with. fortunately it has cleared out now. the storm has moved out of the area, but a lot of people were caught off guard. we'll see have to wait to see when winter comes. we're expecting more rain to hit southern california. we're in the drought but a lot of people weren't expecting that much rain in a short amount of time. >> thank you so much. those images that you were seeing were of the general vicinity of where this incident occurred. not the specific car where the victim unfortunately drow

baldy, area. >> what options do people have today? >> we can give you an option right now.ork taking place behind me. some of the dirt brought off the roadway about a mile of where we are is where one of the massive slides is. some of these boulders are the size of a car. they came down the hills. just beyond this movement right now there was a car buried about 100 yards back. about an hour ago we talked to one of the locals as he dug out the car with his hands. take a listen. >> i thank the lord that my wife and kids were in the house and we're about three houses away from this wash right now. said my prayers. >> reporter: so jenna, good news again is those kids that were stuck in the camp are okay, as we're told. 2,500 people that were shut off by this mudslide, some have been allowed back in so that number will drop significantly pretty quickly as they get these roads back up. it was quite a moment for half-an-hour to 45 minutes yesterday late in the afternoon when that mud and water came down and literally just tore through some of the homes and cars. in fact we're told

one person died in mount baldi about 45 miles northeast of los angeles.he crews found the body inside a vehicle that had been swept off the road and into the creek. of course, the floodwaters almost unimaginable at this point. chad myers is watching the weather map as well. he's in the weather center. ted row lands joining us live. with the current situation on the ground and the circumstance of all those kids? >> yeah, ashleigh, the good news is bulldozers have been able to open up the roadway to get to these kids. these are middle school, high school kids. so they were fine. they had food. adult supervision. they are fine. the process now of getting them out will begin. but it is a mess. an absolute mess. you see the pictures. just walls of mud came down so quickly. you heard those talking about how it was a split second decision for some to go one way or another. unfortunately, there was a fatality. an individual had his car completely overwhelmed. that individual did perish. that is the only injury. you look at the video, it's just amazing more people

a man killed in the resort town of mount baldy. his car was swept away, in the rain swollen streak.giant wall of thick mud and debris that damaged more than 30 homes. at least a dozen of them deemed uninhabitable. mountain road, overnight, were reopened. now freeing thousand of people who were trapped by the mudslide. >> many areas along both coasts could see even more flooding downpour tuesday. >> accuweather meteorologist jim dickey has the latest on the storms and hurricanes in atlantic and pacific. jim, good morning. >> good morning, reena, devin. holding on to heavy rainfall across the west. drying out as we look forward in time. this is the heavy rain we have been seeing since the weekend. produced by an upper low spinning over southern california. pumping in the moisture this weekend breaks apart through the next couple days allowing the rain to taper off a littlee bit. southeast, downpours along the coast. gulf coast, across florida. of course, watching hurricane bertha. the good news this storm not going to make direct landfall. it will turn out to see. the next couple date

baldy area, one person escaped. they conducted five rescues as well. >> there was a full-size honda car swept off the street down into the stream behind my house and was bobbing and went down four or five houses. >> reporter: rescue teams broke a window confirming no one was trapped inside. more cars were stuck in the nearby oakland area. this home video captured the mud flow as it swept across the city streets. in the desert community of cathedral city near palm springs, cars struggled to wade through the normally bone dry city streets. rain came down 3.5 inches an hour. for a state suffering from record drought, this was still too much of a good thickng. searches are under way for anyone who may have been trapped or stranded as crews move into areas that were blocked by mud and hard to reach. >> kara thanks. >>> in northern and central california, crews are battling 14 wildfires this morning, and the state has declared an emergency. most of the fires were started by lightning strikes. firefighters took this dramat

the slides happened sunday during a rain storm in the areas of forest falls and mount baldy about 75iles east of los angeles. campers are still stranded. some roads are still blocked and about 15 homes have been seriously damaged. >> it was getting up as high as the car. >> one driver was killed when his car went off the road and into a creek. crews are now going house to house helping people affected by the mudslide. financial losses are expected to be in the millions of dollars. >>> 8:09. we have an update to developing news we've been following out of afghanistan and in just the last hour, we've found out that the u.s. soldier killed in, a man dressed up in an afghan army uniform opened fire on northern troops near kabul at a military training academy. the u.s. official was telling the associated press about a dozen of the victims were americans. now, german army officials are reporting the other victims were members of nato. we'll keep following the information and bring you the latest information as soon as we get it in. >>> a lawsuit filed by pg&e shareholders over the san brun
