and he comes to baltimore. the painting is of him as a young man in the very beginning of his tremendous success and when he dies in 1835 he's one of the wealthiest men in the united states, but baltimore gave him that opportunity. so for someone like william paterson whose wealth and future wealth was entirely dependent on him being able to trade freely and successfully on the seas he certainly had a vested interest in us going to war. so now we're walking into a section of the exhibit where we look at those early days of the war and on this side of the exhibit we look at everyday life. so one of the things that is very different in some ways about this war as compared to the american revolution is that people are receiving their news even more briskly through more newspapers and people have a choice of what newspapers they can read, and we're very, very lucky to have images of two of the men who for people in maryland were guiding them about what they learned about the war in the papers and the first man is e

the baltimore people -- they're baltimorons, are they? talk in baltimore later on. i don't want to say that. adamantn baltimore were war hawks from the beginning. they called it a nest of thieves, the british did. needed all the help they could get. people couldn't wait to get after the british. contrary to what hey were going to do in washington which was not burn illages, they wanted to raze the city. they had four bomb ships, bomb ships just ships that threw bombs.50-pound so they moved closed to ft. mchenry. it sticks out in baltimore harbor. who was in tead charge of defending ft. mchenry. bit.me back up a little as bad as the american army did in bladensburg folding like a did, it was thee opposite in baltimore. they could see the fires of burning from high points in the city. they knew the british mean business. they had a militia of 5,000 county.n ft. mchenry they built defenses, they built fortifications and so they were british. the the british were ready for them. thee were two components to british attack on baltimore. we don't often hear about the land

the flag was made in 1813 in baltimore. at the time, baltimore was already under a blockade. it was very hard to get materials. when you look at the flag, you can see the number of seams that are in each of the stripes. you can see the number of piecings that were done to the stars to create enough fabric to be able to create this enormous size flag. >> when mary pickersgill received this commission she was paid $405 for this flag. that is a massive amount of money for anyone in 1813. so the amount of money also helped her purchase much of the wool that needed to come to be made for this flag. most of the wool came from britain, i believe. so you have to think about, okay, we're using british wool for an american flag, yet we are blockaded by the british and we are at war with britain. >> there is an aside of mary pickersgill. she was a much younger woman when she made the flag, but the photo image we have behind us is a sketch hanging in the pickersgill home in baltimore. she wasn't just a flag maker and confident businesswoman, we was a philanthropist. she set up a home for
