in the city of baltimore, 300 plow drivers, 15,000 tons of salt will be laid down in baltimore city before it's all said and done, and take a look at the result. white street, one of the main roads in downtown baltimore is covered. we shot video in waverly along 33rd street. this truck apparently tried to take that hill and spun out of the control and hit a tree. no one was injured in the crash. it shows you that it's dangerous conditions if you're not being as careful as you can. we haven't seen too many cars on the roads. we've seen a number of plows, but i have to tell you at the rate the snow is coming down, the plows really can't keep up. and so what you wind up with are downtown streets covered with a thick crust of snow. as we come back live now we'll show you how hard the snow is coming down at this hour. you can really see it whipping buy these downtown streets. heavy snow, and as i mentioned, within about the past half hour or an hour we've really seen a lot of stronger gusty winds coming in to the downtown area. so we're going to be watching how things are going out here. i've o

megan gilliland is live at the baltimore city falls road salt yard in north baltimore with more on their strategy heading into the storm. here we go, megan. >> reporter: good morning, patrice. it feels like the calm before the storm. it's quiet at the salt yard and we are told that is because all of the crew members are at home resting preparing for a 12 hour shift that will begin 38 ter thilater thismorning. it's a huge job for all of these folks. we're talking about a major operation here in the city. over 300 workers will be out in full force. their top priority the primary roads out there. across the region plow trucks are loaded with salt and strategically located around and officials are gathering at the operation center staring the storm in the eye. a lot of work to be done here and there's even something you can do. >> don't go out if you don't absolutely have to he go out. i mean, that's a major, major help to the plows.

what they have been doing is helping the local first responders in baltimore city, baltimore county, anne arundel county and they have been helping to get to some of their calls. it allows the governor to change the way the plow drivers run their shifts, they can only work so many hours but in the state of emergency the governor has said they can work longer than they usually shot. but it's important to snow if we hit blizzard condition with low visibility they may be forced to pull plow drivers off the road and in a heavy snow storm that snow could pile up quickly even on some of the major highways so state officials are hoping people will stay off the roads. there have been no fatalities on maryland roadways throughout this series of storms, they would like to keep it that way regardless of what happens tonight and tomorrow. live in towson, christian schaefer. >>> if you're expecting to fly out of bwi this your good marshall airport looks like you're going to have to wait for a while. flights ended earlier today and most airlines are also canceling out all flights for tomorrow. if

. >> reporter: a baltimore city police detective is shot, a suspect is dead. and a new mayor who took her oath of office today handles her first police emergency. >> the baltimore city police department was shot twice in the right arm in the 3700 block of oakmont avenue. where it intersects with white road in northwest baltimore. who departments were responding to a report of an armed suspect in the area. the detectives made their approach, as they came around the corner to the house, the suspect at least one suspect immediately opened fire with a handgun. >> reporter: police say two days prior to the detective being shot, there was a nonfatal drug involved shooting in the area. the detective who was hit thursday returned fire. police say his partner then engaged with a gunfire with another suspect. >> we know one suspect succumb to his wounds at the scene. the second suspect is in critical condition. >> reporter: the officer served four years in the united states marines, with one tour in iraq. the new mayor was on the job only a few hours, he rushed to the h

we are told the train was on its way to cumberland from baltimore city. police have not identified the victim. still more breaking news at this hour, a deadly police involved shooting in northwest baltimore it was in the 3700 block of oakmont ave. two officers were patrolling the area when they approached a group of men in a hovel. investigators say one of the men shot the officer in his right forearm. one suspect was shot and killed. the other, also shot was taken to sinai hospital. >> what we believe and what we have been on the alert for is any retaliatory violence, and that other bad guys in the neighborhood would be arming themselves with guns in preparation. that is what it looks like happened. >> we have to be aggressive. this officer, unfortunate, was injured because he is doing what he is called to do, not back down when you know there are crimes going on. there is gang territory that we are aggressively going after. >> there is n word tonight on the condition of the surviving suspect. the officer is a three-year veteran of the force and has also

we have snow emergency plans in effect for baltimore city. once again, given the magnitude of the storm, we are encouraging people not to go out tonight. we saw the biggest surge in traffic from about noon until 2:00. many employers let their employees go home at 2:00. it is now starting to come down pretty heavy. i encourage people to check on their neighbors. what else can i tell you that we did not tell you before? 2400 pieces of equipment out there, 2700 personnel. we have had one very unfortunate accident in harford county where a van with two adults and three children appears to have run into the back of one of our private trucks. we hope and pray everybody will be ok from that, but it was a serious accident, which is why we emphasize again how treacherous is out there and how many pieces of equipment there are. i mentioned to 2400 peeps -- pieces of equipment from the state, but all of the counties have equipment out there. you have to be extremely alert and take it slow on these roads. if there is anything you can do to just a off the

. >> baltimore city police are investigating a stabbing at lexington market. it happened at 5:00 this afternoon. the victim was taken to the university hospital for treatment. there is no word on the motive or suspects. the boy who pleaded guilty to murdering his former classmate will spend 20 years behind bars. he was sentenced to 50 years in prison today. the judge suspended 30 of them. in november 2008, he stabbed a classmate outside the middle school. they had an ongoing dispute. >> a grand jury has indicted a man for sexually assaulting a little girl. rodney t. inappropriately touched an 11 year old girl last month inside the church. he is a registered sex offender and on parole until june 2015. he is being held without bail. an arraignment is scheduled for next monday. police have charged a woman with possession of a venomous snake. she claimed that she was bitten by a cobra that she come out discovered in a parking lot. police investigator her claim and found another stay at her home. she is due in court in april. she faces a $1,000 fine for each count.

city. rain mixed in down there. 34, d.c. and 27 in oakland. around the baltimore metro, upper 20s, in some locations. otherwise, we're around the freezing mark. how much snow do we expect around this? we keep updating it. for the most part, most of maryland will see 18 to 24 inches. in other words, two feet. some spots may see 2-feet plus. some areas may see very heavy snow for a couple of hours. then it slows down a little bit. you may even hear thunder. maybe thunder snow with this. and that can bring a 4 to 5- inch snowfall. 12 to 18. 6 to 12. ocean city, probably 2 to 4. maybe as much as 6. even at the beaches. take a look at this. the rest of the region wins. that will be another major factor. and that's why we have another warning for portions of a.a. opportunitiy -- county, down to p.g. county. winds could could gust as high as 50 miles an hour. to our west. even along the shore, 50-plus. we're talking gale-forced winds. all right. we're dealing with winds. we're dealing with low visibility. and that's why we have these blizzard warnings. anything less than

baltimore city streets may be passible in some secondary roads. crash reported at the city, thornfield road. even though it's at the early hour, folks are trying to get out. the crash is starting to come in. the roadways are not ideal at this time. as justin already said they will deteriorate. justin, what's the deal? when will they get more snow later on? >> we will continue to watch that in the radar in a moment. right now i want to do some snowfall totals. the debate we had with the last storm, what happened to dwi marshall. the reason why they pulled back on the snow totals, the observer didn't really do it properly. the official snowfall report is taken about every six hours. elevated and wiped clean. that's the reason why it was thrown out, tossed out. they went with an estimate. i saved that because we will have a wide range of totals, depending where and when you measure. we've mixed some rain, freezing rain and sleet overnight. this is what it resulted so far. in the county, green haven. and pasadena 4.2. riv have a comes in with 3 natches

we are seeing sleet in the baltimore city area through bel air. we get closer and you can plainly see around cockeysville a dividing line, of 83 are you see a sharp line of sleet versus the snow. a line creating sleet and the division is very sharp. we're going to see a difference this time around with more banding of snow in terms of snow fall totals later through the day as opposed to the last storm we had over the weekend when we had a lot more snow, too. if we get more sleet we decrease the totals as far as the snow totals. by mount airy and up toward westminister you're seeing the division also with the sleet to the south and to the north of i-70 and westminister and carroll county in general seeing the snow. we got 7 inches of snow in some places, one of the hardest hit areas last night. we go to the eastern shore, you're seeing just rain there. so quite a difference from one place to the next. we continue to watch these areas as we get closer into the later part of the are morning when the winds will add to the mix and we get drifting snow.
