we start with breaking news, as you've been watching on msnbc out of baltimore, maryland. looking at live pictures right now in baltimore where young demonstrators are clashing with police. earlier, demonstrators were throwing rocks and other objects at officers. at the moment fire trucks arriving at this burning vehicle. we've been watching it over the last hour here from this helicopter that was over this area, which we believed to be around the mondawmin mall not too far away from where the funeral was held earlier today for freddie gray. that 25-year-old who died after being taken into custody by baltimore police. that happened jus not too many hours ago. and then right after that about 3:00 today we did get a tweet from the baltimore police saying they were concerned about threats. against the police department and against officers. two hours later, exactly at this moment 5:01 p.m. eastern time violence has erupted to some degree there in this area. we have seen some looting. live pictures again coming out of the downtown area. joining us now is nbc's brian mooar, who

i am live in baltimore, maryland. it is midnight here eastern time and this city has been under a curfew since 10:00 p.m. for two hours now. initially, there were people who defied that curfew order, defied the order and stayed out on the streets. police moved in methodically and moved them off the streets and in the course of two hours, there is barely anyone on the streets now. in some locations, there may be people who pop up or crop up. there may be crowds that try to pop up. but police have gained control of this city. quite a different scene than last night, than 24 hours ago when last i came to you at this scene. cnn's correspondents are stationed throughout the city. miguel marquez brings us the latest from where he is. miguel, what are you seeing? >> we're on pennsylvania avenue, which is the main corridor that leads from north avenue where a lot of the protestify was today and where a lot of the violence was last night. then pennsylvania goes all the way downtown. along this corridor, we saw a lot of the act

there's a curfew in baltimore maryland where it appears police have gotten it under control but in new york city where there are demmen demonstrations there is chaos and what looks to be an arrest. alexandra, take us to the scene. what's going on. in times square. >> reporter: i'm on 42nd street and what you saw was the crowd walking against traffic and that's why the police began to swarm and arrest that man. this is a scene that we've seen play out over the last few hours. the crowd here has swelled and contracted. they started in union square and were on the west side highway. you go to times square and they are over here. you hear a lot of shouting and chanting. the police have been closely staying with him and a lot of the time forming a line and walking next to the crowd and other times on mopeds. when the demonstrators go into the streets, that's when you see police reacting and making arrests. we saw a lot of arrests this evening when a huge group got in the middle of 17th street. and we've heard tense words exchanged. we're hearing a lot of demonstrators who are frankly angry.

what we do know is baltimore is in a state of, let's say high alert right now. the university of maryland, baltimore, has been shut down, in the middle of all of this. milwaukee county sheriff david clark, dr. alveda king joining us right now. dr. king the niece of martin luther king, taking all of this in. you had written a letter to the mayor, trying to urge caution here and to dial that language back. >> i was trying to explain to the mayor and i hope she got it it's an open letter on social media. maybe the viewer can help us get that to her. of you look at those children throwing the rocks and the anger and then being stirred on by outside agitators. in the 1960s the children's march, we were calm, we were orderly, we were prayerful and so we knew how to demonstrate peacefully. no one has instructes these young children. then the mayor gives an invitation to destroy and economically and morally that's disaster and i don't know if she -- if she is the head of the city she should be thinking. >> she did use the line a couple of times enough space for those who want to destroy. what do

thank you. >> reporter: cnn, baltimore, maryland. >> the family of freddie gray is hosting a wake thisprepare for his funeral tomorrow. cnn athena jones is in baltimore. do we know more about whether protesters plan other demonstrations? >> reporter: the wake is taking place right now it began about an hour ago and will continue for the next several hours in the west baltimore neighborhood of freddie gray. while there isn't, i guess, an official hiatus on protesters seems to be an unofficial hiatus. no organized trottests we know of today. the next big event will be next wednesday, a town hall to talk about the state of play here. you heard from freddie gray's sister calling on demonstrators not to be violent to remain peaceful. she is echoing calls by the mayor and other officials, including some leaders of these protests. things did get out of hand yesterday after a largely peaceful day ended in skirmishes. the latest we have is 34 people were arrested overnight. six police officers suffered minor injuries in addition to store fronts that were vandalized. the baltimore p.d. tweeted e
