tradition of that, of course, in american history, not just among journalists, but going back to george bancroft and some of the earliest measure historians. >> who you have written about. >> not myself, no. but i think that one of the problems as we know for historians is who are mostly academic historians like most of the people in this room and one of the people on this panel, is how to retain the color, the w romance, i think, of mihistory, but also deeply analytical. which i learned a little bit from reading "time" and "life" when i was a kid believe it or not. i won't go on very long here, but basically for me, reading "time" and "life" which came into the house every week and my mother worked at the time life building, so we got the issues earlier, was sort of a window was about how history was about everything. not just about politics ordy low massey or war. s of about sport, it was about high culture, low culture, it was about art. "time" and "life" were all about these things. so there was a vividness there which i perhaps unconsciously death wanted to bring into the history that i lai

anne makovec gins us from bancroft in berkeley. she has the latest from there. anne, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the story of this fire is less dramatic the building where the fire started just before 4:00 this morning. nobody has been injured or displaced of. it's a one-story building with an attic. firefighters were called after somebody reported smoke and flames coming from the roof of the building. once firefighters got here, they found what they call multiple areas of fire. it was burning in several areas of the building which could be indicative of a natural pattern they say or that this might have been intentionally set. but they have no idea right now. the investigation has not really begun. they are making sure that the fire is out and cleaning up obviously from their firefighting efforts right now. it wa vacant. perhaps transients may have been living in the building but no real evidence for that right now. and we did speak to some neighbors around here that said that they did hear some rumors about at one point this building being busted

he told his secretary of the navy, john bancroft, he said i'm going to settle this question in the northwest with the british. the british and the americans owned together something called the bonn territory. but it encompassed more than oregon. it was the state of oregon, washington, part of nevada, part of montana, and it was all part of british columbia. and it was a joint protectership, whatever the legal term is, and the british were making gestures about wanting this, and the americans wanted more. they wanted the 5440 latitude way up close to alaska. and there were other people running around in the election of 1845, and nobody paid much attention to them. but polk won, and he said he was going to settle that question, and he said the second question i'm going to settle is the question of this tariff which is causing all this grief down in the south. it was a big tariff put on foreign goods, and it was causing the southerners to threaten to secede. and then he said he was going to get rid of this national bank that andrew jackson didn't like, and polk was a protege of andrew jackson,
