[applause] so she does not know this but today we would like to celebrate her. as -- she doesn't even know i'm connected to her and in the '80's, she worked in watsonville and worked in getting people who didn't have food, food. and for a very short time, i was a child teenager, let's say. i was a teen in the early '80's and we didn't have food. we were there a few months doing migrant work and i was there hungry. because of a project she had done as a child she didn't even know, my family had food. this is the type of person i can believe in because for all of these years, she continued to say, you need food. let's get you that. you need health care, let's get you that. so today i'm going to have one of our other volunteers for the garden we have. how many of you know about ph.d. garden? a few of those. this is one of my favorite things. another thing barbara believes in is sustainable food, having a safe place people can come to every single day and being in a space, be comfortable.

buchbinder and barbara and the commissioners, congratulations. these days it is so difficult to land federal grants, so matter where they're from and it only takes the dedication that you've identified, the people who worked on this very hard to put together a grant specific to modernize our aids research office and it's absolutely needed. i remember in the early 1980's where we joined three major cities of the country, this city and new york and los angeles, where the initial aids research got started and we are concentrated in our areas but we understood that this epidemic had to be studied further to make sure we were on the right track to discover not only breakthroughs but prevention ideas that would be directed at curtailing this epidemic. so you fast forward the 25, 30 years since that time, and we need more of that research done so i am glad this money was identified. it's going to be very helpful. the $9.5 million of aid from the national institute of health. this is almost miraculous. you don't see these grants very often to public agen

i am barbara harrison. it's thursday, november 10th, 2011. we begin with the on going fallout from the growing sex abuse scandal in one of the nation's premier football schools. penn state trustees fired coach paterno and spanair. nbc's jay gray joins us from college, pennsylvania. >> reporter: a rough night has given way to a somber morning here on the campus of penn state university. still so many trying to come to grips that joe paterno will not be part of game day here at penn state. the turmoil at penn state poured into the streets overnight. afterward spread of a late decision by the board of trustees that the legendary coach, coach paterno, and the president would be relieved of their duties immediately. thousands of students gathered on campus, some turning violent and smashing windows and overturning a news van. and in front of paterno's home, many rallied to show support. with his wife at his side, paterno spoke briefly thanking the crowd. >> hey, look, get a good night's sleep. study, all right? we still have got things to do. all
