the first character is barbara johns powell , as a high school student, named barbara johns , she led a strike of students in 1950 in her segregated high school, in farmville, virginia. she led this protest against in adequate conditions of her high school. as i mentioned, segregation allowed for the maintenance of several separate facilities. including schools for black and white students. and generally black students have much poor students and facilities than their white counterparts. barbara johns got sick of that , she led a student protest that ultimately linked her school's case to the larger case of the school desegregation . brown versus board of education which was a landmark u.s. supreme court decision and that 1954. it is struck down the notion of the separate but equal. it overturn the early decision of plessy v ferguson and mandated the integration of black and white schools. it was a landmark decision that recognized that separate was on equal. and it had to be ended. unfortunately brown v board of education was not done. many southern states there were deeply resistant

the santa barbara county district attorney will have some comments for you as well, assistant chief ryanthe office of emergency services, and then we will hear about what we will do for victims‘ families. the incident today began at approximately 3:30am. the coastguard sector in los angeles received and made a call that was from a fully engulfed 75 foot commercial diving vessel that was off the coast of santa cruz island. crews from the us coastguard, the ve ntu ra crews from the us coastguard, the ventura county fire department, and the vessel assist organisation responded. the coastguard launched aircraft as well as boats, and located a vessel that was fully engulfed in flames on the north side of sa nta engulfed in flames on the north side of santa cruz island. the vessel began to sink at approximately 7:20am this morning. 39 souls were reported to be on board that vessel when it left santa barbara. five rooms were subsequently rescued, and during the initial response it had been transported to ventura harbour. this particular dive trip that the boat was on was a three day trip that b

and santa cruz island, but it's off the coast of santa barbara. are the first pictures of the scene that we're seeing this morning. all morning the coast guard has been saying that more than 30 people were on board that boat as they were trying to rescue them. it's a 75-foot boat near the channel islands. we have video into our newsroom of a u.s. coast guard boat headed to the scene in oxnard, ventura county. the coast guard is saying the boat is on fire. we know at least one crew member is hurt, and five others were rescued. earlier this morning we heard a medical examiner called out to the scene which is usually an indication that at least one person has died. the coast guard is saying that it is launching multiple assets as well as getting help from nearby agencies. we want to talk about the conditions there this morning. kari, we know this is going to be a complicated rescue and that it's under way right now. >> they were saying they were having problems getting there due to weather conditions, a surge of monsoonal moisture and that caused sho
