good evening, i'm barbara harrison in for jim handly. news4's chris gorden has the story from culpepper, virginia. >> reporter: michael hash arrived in handcuffs and shackles, seeking his release from prison after serving 12 years for the murder of 74-year-old thelma trackens, he was convicted in 2001 but weeks ago, a federal court judge vacated his murder conviction, citing misconduct by the prosecutor and police. after a brief hearing, hash was ordered released on conditions that he doesn't leave virginia, that he resides with his parents, reports to a caseworker weekly and posted a $10,000 bond. his restraints were removed and he was transported back to be ale natural county where he will be released. lawyers with the mid-atlantic innocence project worked for years to get hash released from prison. >> we are very happy that mike's going to be home with his family tonight and we are really looking forward to working with the special prosecutor as he decides whether or not he is going to retry the case. >> reporter: michael hash will re

barbara harrison is in the newsroom working this story. >> reporter: jim, nato and the state department are promising a rapid and thorough investigation into the shootings and president obama called afghan president hamid karzai today to express condolences. still, there is growing anger here and abroad. 16 afghan citizens, most women and children, were killed early sunday. that's when a u.s. soldier apparently left his base in the kandahar province in the middle of the night, went into the villagers' homes and shot them while sleeping. some execution style. today afghan troops stepped up patrols. many fear there could be violent retaliation as word of the incident spreads. >> it was a senseless tragedy. the larger problem will be, this is a spark, landing on this tinder box of afghanistan. >> the soldier's name has not been released but we have learned he is a 38-year-old staff sergeant from the military base in washington state. he served three tours in iraq and was deployed to afghanistan for the first time on december 3rd, assigned to a village stability operation. he was married an

i'm barbara harrison, it is monday, march 12, 2012. >>> we begin with new information about prince william county virginia. a mother pleaded guilty to two counts of misdemeanor child neglect in the death of her son. she left her 2-year-old son in the back seat of the family mini-van for more than seven hours last june as she went to work as a veterinarian. under the agreement she will serve 400 hours of community service at an animal shelter. a judge also sentenced her to six years probation and she received two years suspended sentence. prosecutors dropped three more serious charges, including felony murder. prosecutors agreed to negotiate a plea because murphy took responsibility for her actions. murphy was distraught during the plea hearing this morning. >>> right now the university of maryland student is undergoing an emergency mental evaluation after getting arrested. the 19-year-old, alexander song, is accused of threatening to go on a shooting rampage on campus. news4's megan mg grath cgrath in college park with reaction. >> reporter: right now alexander song is facing a misdemeanor

i'm barbara harrison. it is wednesday, march 7, 2012. right now the search is on for the armed gunman responsible important a home invasion near the campus of george mason university in fairfax county. the two men broke into a home on carriage park road and right across the street from the campus. news4's melissa mollet joins us live with more. melissa? >> reporter: i just spoke with one of the gmu students who was inside that home. he says it has been a very strong light and hardly got any sleep. a terrifying ordeal. they did not recognize these would men that went inside of the home late last night. he says that it was just a very, very scary situation but, of course, police still looking for those two suspects and went in the house late last night and got away with a whole lot of electronics. five george mason students were inside their townhouse late tuesday might. >> they were chatting, doing some work. playing video games. >> reporter: when would men came inside through an unlocked back door. armed with handguns they started demand

i'm barbara harrison. it is friday, march 2, 2012. arlington police are on the hunt for three men who impersonated police in two unrelated cases. one of the incidents was in the 300 block of south fillmore street. news4's megan mcgrath is live on lee highway where the other incident happened. what can you tell us about this? >> reporter: barbara, scary for the victims. especially in the home invasion-style crime. that happened on fillmore street. there was a second incident that happen order lee highway. that was more of a bogus traffic stop. bottom line here is that there are a lot of people out there who are very trusting. when they are approached by someone in regular clothes that says they are a police officer, they believe them. unfortunately there are criminals out there who are taking advantage of that. a uniformed officer in a police cruzzer get pulled over and things are pretty straightforward. but what if you are approached by someone in plainclothes who claims to be a cop. >> if somebody is pulled over by a person who is in

i'm barbara harrison. provide, march 9, 2012. the calvert county schaeffer's department is still trying to sort out the details after a dead infant was found in the trunk of a car. the baby was found last night in a car near the intersection of hallowing point road in prince frederick. that's where megan mcgrath is live with the latest information. >> reporter: barbara, that car was parked in front of a gray mobile home. sources tell news4 that the vehicle belongs to a woman and that one of her relatives was clearing out items from the car when they discovered infant in the trunk. news of what happened travels fast through this small mobile home community. a newborn baby has been found dead inside the trunk of a car. >> our hearts go out to the family members that located this infant and in the trunk of this vehicle. this is heart wrenching for our community and law enrs forcement. >> reporter: the car was park order the street. a relative of the owner was cleaning it out when they opened the trunk they found the dead child. inve

i'm barbara harrison. it is thursday, march 8, twegt. we have breaking news off the top for a second day in a row. a d.c. public school has received a suspicious letter. the school in southwest washington is the latest school to receive such letter. it is on the 400 block of i street. megan mcgrath is live from there. megan, what's the situation out there now? >> reporter: well, barbara, we have a big police press pence. hazmat crew just emerged from the school. i will step out of the way so you can take a live look for yourself here. they have the street in front of the school completely cordoned off here and people wearing special gear went inside and they were inside for about 1520, minutes and they just emerged from the front door of the school. we are told that the students who did arrive this morning are sheltering in place but that no one is being let inside or outside. the school received a suspicious letter this morning. a letter with a suspicious white powder. we are also just learning that there is another suspicious letter be
