so the thought exercise i have for congresswoman barbara lee, the woman courageous enough to make that vote, was this -- your family was in the military. you represented military installations in your community, and you stood up and said no. tell us a little bit about what that was like and how you think the reaction might have been different if you were a straight white male. , christine. so much think you for the great introduction. you just laid it out. what we all face as women. just thank you for your tremendous initiative. and what a difference an election makes with your mother as speaker. i just have to say that because we have a lot of work to do for our country and for women especially. you know, first of all, i didn't recognize myself after the media and those out there tried to describe who this person was, who this woman was who cast that vote. , just as with speaker pelosi, demonized me, they called me a traitor, they said i was committing an act of treason, lots of death threats. they said i was crazy, did not know what i was doing, did not know what i was talking about.

it has to do with some of the work congresswoman barbara lee started having to do with battered woman syndrome. some of these victims did not get there justice during their jury trials and, consequently, they are sitting in jail. there are about 11,000 women sitting in prison right now. the majority of them have gone to some kind of domestic violence in their lifetime. many are there was no opportunity of seeing their life on the outside. my last two bills, we worst hard with documentary makers as well as a woman who spent 26 years in jail and was out advocating for her sister's in jail. the study bills are giving these women -- advocating for her sisters in jail. these two bills are giving these --men rain chance -- a chance. in placing parole board to face great weight on these cases and not write it off as lack of remorse, which is what they had been doing for many years. i started going to parole board hearings. i heard about this system of former mostly public safety retirees who were tough on crime. they did not believe they should release anybody. i wanted to see for myself. i

joining me at the table, congresswoman barbara lee, democrat from california. a member of congressional black caucus. it's great to have you here. >> very happy to be with you tonight. >> the conversation that we have had out of the verdict has gone in two directions. i think there's been a conversation we've been having an this network on the left, i think about stereotyping, about suspicion of black men, about profiling. there's been a conversation the conservatives have been anxious to have about, quote, black-on-black crime. how do you understand those two conversations that are happening? >> well, i tell you one thing, chris, i'm so pleased that you're digging deeper into this because race, first of all, has been swept under the rug for so, so long, and now that the horrific tragedy of trayvon martin, oscar grant in my district, who was tragically killed three years ago. these conversations are beginning, but it's really showing us, first of all, that there are some in the far right such as bill o'reilly who are using this at this point in terms of what co

and still with us congresswoman barbara lee of california. with you because b29 really once again sort of brought this conversation back. what do you make of her interview? >> you know, it's really complicated because i think this case has really been -- you know, has involved discussions of racial ambiguity all along and questions of who george zimmerman really is. is he a white hispanic? is he a latino? what does this all mean? so when i heard that this juror was potentially latina and people couldn't make sense of her i expected the potential for this sort of a situation to unfold. but we shouldn't be surprised. on the one hand because we have many psychological experiments that have shown us that in situations of extreme duress people oftentimes make decisions that contradict their deeply held beliefs. but you know, i think that we could get caught up in the discussion of what her mindset is or what was happening in the jury room and forget actually the kind of -- all of the range of policies that made this happen. right? >> yes. >> so we
