i do think barbara lee has the opportunity make up some ground. but let's remember now now that steve garvey is in the race on the republican side, it's going to be a lot harder for these 3 major democrats to attract less to say in the pendant or or even the republican voters in this race. steve garvey now has that opportunity. remember, we're time at the march primary. here are the top 2. so whereas before steve garvey entered this race and you had katie porter, barbara lee and adam trying perhaps be a little bit more moderate so they could get in those republican voters. remember, republican voters make up about 22% of the registered voters in the state will now we have steve garvey doing that. and with those polls coming out showing that steve garvey has maybe between 10 to 20% of the vote that's neck and neck right there with barb early. so barbara lee now has to really narrow perhaps not just her own base, but on those independent voters might have narrow to compete with steve garvey just come. and number 2 there, of course, we're also talkin

barbara lee running a decent amount behind a lot of that, i think does have to do with a gap in fundraising and visibility and name identification outside of her bay area base. and then i think there is really a question looking ahead to the general election of under california's top two primary system, whether we are going to get two democrats, possibly katie porter and adam schiff on that. general election ballot, or if we will see a republican get enough votes to get into that top two. i don't think at this point you can say it is a given that republicans are going to consolidate behind any of the candidates. we have eric earley, a former attorney general candidate, former los angeles dodgers star steve garvey, both getting in there. neither of whom, i would say, has really sort of seen the party's support coalesce behind them in a way that you would say they're definitely going to draw a large enough share of voters to get that second place finish. so certainly, senator butler getting in there would have really upended this race. but i think there's still a lot of fluidity as to what it

but it's not barbara lee, and a lot of people are not thrilled about that.hat do you make of this choice? >> well, a couple things. one, full transparency, i have worked with laphonza in the past, and i think she's extraordinary. and don't take it from me. the statement by mayor bass, this is someone who has worked for working people all her life and she supports her. she's a fabulous pick for this. but also, let's take a look at the politics. look, joy, i know a lot of people, some people have problems with it, and look, i heard congressional black caucus and they were pushing for congresswoman lee, and understandably so. but at the same time, i can't knock gavin for this one. he picked someone who the women's community, the gay and lesbian rights community, and a large share of the african american community says you can't knock this. you can't knock this pick. at the same time, so he pulled back some of the criticism that would come from the pick. at the same time, look, it is tough for the governor, and again, i have no dealings with governor newsom, but

but if your name is barbara lee, you're out right. and you can't do that. yeah, i think that kind of two step which which which was reported here that he did kind of sidestep past that question. the governor is trying to have it both ways or all ways here. that's not a surprise in terms of what he's looking forward because he's a progressive when it's convenient for him and he's with union and labor when it's convenient for him. but when they're looking nationally, they're also looking to make some space here. and this is a historic pick. and she will be the only african american woman in the senate. she's going to take the senate in a different direction and that will be hugely important. she's also maybe doesn't have a track record of an elected official, but she's not a political novice . this is someone who's knocked heads with labor and knows how to get things done. and that will be fascinating to watch because the senate is often a place that wakes up at noon and tries to get its business done by 3 p.m. and this is not the work ethic that we see with
