allison barber joins us live from the hospital with more. allison? >> reporter: as you know, that firefighter who lost his life, his name was lieutenant kevin mcrae. he was 44 years old. he joined the dc fire department back in 1989. he's been a veteran with this force for well over 20 years. the mayor just spoke to us and told us a little bit about that man. take a listen. today is a day to mourn the passing of the lieutenant and comfort members of engine 6 who lost a brother ana leader. lieutenant mcrae is the 100th member of the department to perish in the line of duty. . >> reporter: the last firefighter who died in the line of duty was in 2007. that firefighter was actually a cousin of lieutenant mcrae. the mayor said the fact they already lost another family member in a fire makes this that much harder today. the family is at the hospital. the mayor spoke with them. lieutenant kevin mcrae leaves behind a wife and three children. we know one other firefighter was brought here to medstar with injuries. he has since been released. two other civili

ellison barber joins us with more on the death of d.c. fire lieutenant kevin mcrae. >> reporter: you can see some evidence of mourning behind me. this is the fire station where lieu -- lieutenant kevin mcrae spent the last six years working with engine company 6. they've hung some black tarps over the garage door. lieutenant mcrae was a firefighter for 22 years. deputy chief john donnelly worked with mcrae in the rescue squad. it was challenging work, but donnelly said mcrae did more than succeed. >> whether it's going over the side of the be on a rope or how to -- building on a roam or how to search in a -- rope or how to search in a burning building for a victim, kevin had done all those thing and he taught other people. his smile and positive at -- attitudes are the best things about him. >> reporter: firefighters from all over d.c. and some from maryland came to pay respects. students that went to school with his son came by. >> when he heard about his father dying this morning, it was very painful. so we just want to show the fire de

allyson barber is there live on the scene. what do we know so far? >> reporter: still learning a lot of information. what we know right now is that two floors of a parking deck collapsed inside the water gate hotel. we got here an hour ago. tons of fire trucks and police cars behind me and over on the left side of the street. there were a couple of hundred construction workers on the side of the road. they were either inside that hotel working or getting ready to go inside and work when the parking garage collapsed. some construction workers that we spoke with said it was two floors it seemed to be the ground floor that fell into the base. . they say that they didn't smell anything that was smoky it seemed like there was all caused by some type of pressure explosion. they believe that it was caused by some type of pipe explosion. d.c. fire tells us they're still investigating that right now. we saw some photos from one construction worker and it really looked just kind of like a big sinkhole. what we know right now is that everyone that was on the co
