bart unions reacted to the news of the deaths this afternoon putting aside the issues surrounding the ongoing labor strike to send condolences to the families of the bart worker and contractor who were killed. kimberly terry is in the news room with more on that. >> once they got word of the deadly accident, workers with the amalgamated transit union stopped picketing and announced out of members will not be holding rallies or picketing tomorrow. the unions which have said safety concerns are among the major issues they have with bart steered clear of the subject choosing instead to focus on the lives lost and their grieving loved ones. >> one of the employees was a member of local 3393. our hearts go out to the family of both workers as well as the person operating the trains. this was an unnecessary tragedy. >> the main point right now is to just express condolences for the families, the loved ones, so this is just -- this is a tragic stint and so as people have said, there will be plenty of time to talk more about what happened after people find out what did happen. >> these commen

bart unions say in the last 53 days they have not heard anything back from bart about the economic packagefrom the cooling off period. the unions say they presented a cost saving proposal to bart. lowers the wage increase from original asking of 7% to now 3.75% for the first two years and goes to 4% to 2016. that's still roughly 2% less than bart's 1.7% wage increase they are asking for for all three years. the unions are also willing to increase healthcare contributions more than 15% for all of bart workers. it's time that bart respond s to proposals as to avoid a strike. beside wages and healthcare, bart still needs to address the safety issues. >> it's important that they now respond and give us a new proposal so the public can be assured there will not be a strike in a week from today. >> also says the lighting is inadequate on the tracks and want the restrooms to be reopened. there was headway made in the negotiations. on tuesday, both sides came to an agreement on pensions. can both sides come to an agreement on the wages and also on the healthcare to avoid another bart strike. live

that is one of bart's unions. they are going to talk about what lead up to the strike and why a deal has not yet been reached. standing by at the lake merritt bart station is kron 4's mike pelton. they put these issues on the table but for six months river never told that these were primary issues we reach an economic framework. we moved to their direction on pension. we move to their direction on health care. we lowered our wage proposal and that all of a sudden these issues were discussed at the table. these are due breakers by the district. we see essentially as an effort to jam the unions and do exactly what they've done is force us out on strike. we spent six months working on that economic framework so we have agreement. in other words if the district in the union have an economic agreement we don't need to renegotiate that. a full agreement so we proposed was on this work rule issues. the modification of the contract we wanted. we agree to arbitration on some of those limited issues. we thought that was logi

the deal that settled the bart strike is not being made public yet because the unions and the bart board have to ratify the contract. we are joined by cornell with the the lake merritt bart station. >> the tentative agreement has to be reviewed by bart union members. few details are revealed but it has been confirmed that it includes the installation of bullet roof glass for station agents. the strike is over. that is for sure. >> getting trains rolling again took a lot more than calling operators and station agents back to work. it took compromise and concessions on both sides to reach a deal one that the general manager admitted isn't perfect. >> this is more than we wanted to pay but it is a new path in terms of our partnership with our workers and helps us deliver the bart service for the future. >> grace 8 -- grace will not reveal the details until the contract is ratified. some say it was fair and generous to get the bay area moving again. >> our executive board does recommend the agreement but we want tour members to have the opportunity to review it, to ask quotes and get everyth

they could -- bart workers could walk off the job early friday morning. but right now, the union is saying it doesn't want to strike, that bart has not budged at all but the unions have given in three different times. they say they don't want to hold the bay area hostage. we'll be getting more analysis and i can tell you that our surveyusa/kpix 5 poll shows that among bart riders and the people in the bay area, they overwhelmingly support bart's position and not the unions'. whether that's playing into this, we don't know. but we'll get more analysis coming up tonight at 6:00. >>> pg&e shut down a high pressure natural gas pipeline in san carlos from "becoming the next san bruno." a judge ordered an emergency shutdown of line 147 after pg&e internal emails surfaced questioning whether an 83-year- old seam weld is safe or not. that type of weld has been a problem. it runs through the san carlos neighborhood. pg&e did not know, it says, that the weld existed on that pipeline until crews discovered it last november while fixes corrosion. >> it's been shown since san bruno that their
