nbc bay area's robert handa was the first reporter on the scene. robert, the fire just across the street from a fire station. unfortunately they didn't have the one thing they needed the most. >> reporter: that's right, jessica. san jose firefighters have long complained about the budget cuts that took away a fire engine that carried water from that station. and after yet another fire in this area, neighbors say they would like to see that service restored. the four-alarm fire started shortly after noon. by this evening, 12 people were safe but displaced and in the hands of the red cross. 72 firefighters with 25 trucks and engines battled the fire that just spread from one house to several other units. this is cell phone video of when the fire first started shot by one of several men who rushed in to help evacuate residents. >> it just engulfed in flames. it spread quick, it went up high and it was fast and it was hot. >> reporter: the fire was fueled by building materials, trash and chemicals in a backyard. investigators say they can't tell yet wh

nbc bay area's christie smith is in brisbane this evening. christie a lot of layers to the story including the link to the body parts found under the dumbarton bridge. what's the latest? >> reporter: i can tell you that investigators tonight from two different police departments say there is a strong likelihood that the remains found near fremont may be shelley titchener. investigators were back at it the same area again earlier today. friends and neighbors leave flowers and cards outside the brisbane home that two police agencies searched. >> it was very shocking. two doors away from your house when there's something scary as that. >> reporter: shelley titchener was reported missing february 15th by her husband paul who days later took his own life by jumping off the bay bridge. then on sunday, the grim discovey of a torso near fremont. investigators say they also found other items that might connect the two cases. and search crews were back out looking again today. >> we feel fairly confident and strongly that it is likely shelley. but we j

nbc bay area marianne favro joins us with new developments in this investigation. >> reporter: hayward police tell us stacey aguilar's body was found here on saturday in fremont in a rural area off morrison road. they say she'd been shot several times. 22-year-old stacey aguilar was last seen leaving a party with her boyfriend early sunday morning. today police say they believe she was killed in hayward and her body was then dumped in a rural off off morrison road in fremont. >> the body was found with gunshot wounds. >> reporter: police say they have a person of interest in custody, but won't say if it's stacey's boyfriend. they do say her boyfriend is behind bars on other charges. >> the boyfriend was arrested for domestic violence, and he is one of the persons that we've questioned. >> reporter: today during a phone interview from mexico, stacey's mother told us she didn't know her daughter was a victim of domestic violence and said -- i want all of this to end, i want my daughter's ashes to be brought to me. police say they're confident they have the right suspect but won't release

nbc bay area's mark matthews is in san francisco this evening. mark, what ignited this protest and what are the students asking for? >> reporter: raj, it was a poster that was put up at the school on february 5th by a student right around the time of the beginning of black history month. here it is. a poster with pictures of ramps like kanye west and sean combs with president obama and the words "happy black history month #gangs" about 30 mostly african-american students from lowell high school walked out of class today and up the steps of city hall to complain about the poster and what they see as racist behavior from classmates. >> i was coming from class with this student. we were walk in the hallway. and he was like, you're making me look ghetto. >> they sit in class, and we get mumbled about. we don't get looked the same as the same students right next to us. >> one day i was on the bus with her. she was like -- she showed me a video like hey is this true? is this how black girls chew gum? and i'm like what? how black girls chew gum? what ar

secure area of the facility where they escaped -- after police in the bay area arrested two t >>> three southern california inmates now in a far more secure area of the facility they escaped after police in the bay area arrested two of them over the weekend. san francisco police arrested yesterday and rebooked. we are learning more about the moments that led up to that capture near golden gate park. an alert citizen saw their stolen van. one exchange between a dispatcher and officers giving chase. >> still running eastbound. >> code four. >> 37-year-old hossein nayeri and jonathan tieu escaped ten days ago. he surrendered in southern california on friday. guards are now housing all three separate inside the jail. now investigators are trying to get to the bottom of not only how the three escaped but how they got by on the lamb. this is the facility's first jail break in nearly 30 years. investigators believe the inmates got help from a female english teacher inside the facility. so far no disciplinary action against department personnel. investigators still have not indicated where the

nbc bay area's christie smith is live in richmond with the latest on the investigation and the troubling trend. sgrsh. >> reporter: it has happened once again. gunfire on an east bay freeway. we're talking about interstate 80. this time what police are saying is the man who was shot went off the road just before the hilltop mall exit. the car went off the hillside here then bounced forward and rolled down the hill. the drive ir, a man in his 40s, was ejected from the jeep. he died at the scene. this happened at about 1:00 this morning. chp says the driver was heading westbound near richmond parkway when another car drove by and fired multiple rounds at the jeep. westbound lanes were closed for hours while the investigation went on. the chp says the victim was specifically targeted and there is no danger to the public at this time. this is the seventh, possibly eighth shooting on the corridor since november. some investigators have said gang activity or feuds are suspected in at least some incidents. one east bay mayor showed and up weighed in. >> it's way too many that should not be happ

it becomes weaker, clouds moving all across the bay area by 10:30. and still light rain moving into the north bay, while it kind of fizzles out as it moves farther to the south. so once again we're not expecting much out of the system but it's helping to cool us down and bring it back a little closer for the average to the end of february. today in gilroy, still warm, 72 degrees, in redwood city, 66 degrees, financial district, 61. napa, 64 degrees in oakland. a high today of 66, pleasanton, 69 degrees, as you see that seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen we'll have a couple of chances of rain in the next several days but nothing significant until about next thursday. and with that system well to the west of us it will still be enough to turn up some of the waves and produce a high surf advisory swells up to 11 to 14 feet. and long periods between those swells. this weekend as you make plans to get outside it will be very nice. up to 69 degrees in the peninsula tomorrow. and then on sunday we'll have a little bit more cloud cover. i'm going

now to an nbc bay area investigation into stolen guns. the san francisco supervisors today gave an initial approval to an expanded ordinance to slap new restrictions on gun owners and law enforcement officers. the ordinance requires that weapons stored in cars or trucks be secured in locked boxes or in trunks with automatic release levers disabled. you'll remember guns were being stolen from officers cars and were used in homicides. >>> well, game day is approaching quickly complete with turf, logo apps and lots of wi-fi. the nfl says it's ready to host super bowl 50 at levi stadium. the chopper gives us a bird's eye view of the stadium where you can see the green there. the turf is ready ahead of sunday's showdown. scott budman is there, how does it look, scott? >> reporter: the nfl says it's ready and the app is ready to go. it has a field ready to go. and it has a half-time show making everybody nervous. >> thank you, number one, actually. >> reporter: the final checks are being made. miles of wires to handle high-speed data laid down

as it approaches the bay area, we'll see scattered light showers into the evening commute and also moving into san francisco right around 5:00 or 6:00. into the south bay, it kind of takes its time getting here. also for the east bay a lot of that rain will be drying up. so i do think the heaviest rain will be in the north bay. as it approaches san francisco, we may get about 0.1 of an inch before it clears out and we have sunshine. still a high surf advisory in effect into friday with some of those waves continuing to stay up with some breezy winds. so far the waves haven't been really that high at five to six feet. but as the winds pick up later today we may have higher waves moving in. the rain rolls through late tonight. then heading into the rest of the forecast, a lot of the fronts that will be moving through will stay north of us and our temperatures will be warming. as high pressure moves in, we'll get a lot of sunshine and then temperatures going into the 60s, 70s and we'll maybe even hit 80 degrees bite next of next week. so a major warmup is on the way. and we start on friday w
