fire departments across the bay area are sending teams. cal fire santa clara unit sent 52 firefighters. and the question now is with so many said to mariposa county, do we have the resources if another major fire starts here in the bay area? >> and we still have a lot of resources here and there is a lot of cooperators, other fire agencies, where we have a mutual agreement with, so we will be able to protect the community. >> reporter: the cal fire has already requested additional crews to back fill crews sent to the oak fire. alameda county fire says they require firefighters to do mandatory overtime to make sure the community stays protected. >> when we do send out crews to help at the state's request, we make sure to back fill those crews at home, so we do require our firefighters to work extra shifts to make sure that all of our engines, trucks, the rescue are all fully staffed. and it is a big lift. >> reporter: covid also adds to the challenges with many departments noting that some of their people are in quarantine. and not all bay

here on the ground the onshore breeze is going to be pushing the surface level smoke away from the bay area. while the air quality for the north bay and east bay may dip into the moderate category for the next several days it is not likely to get any worse than that because of the onshore wind keeping the supply of fresh air, clean air just continuing to roll into the bay area. it is also going to push fog further inland and help mitigate the local fire threat over the next couple days but we also have to worry about the potential of a couple dry lightning strikes late tonight. a lot going on. we'll talk about that in a few minutes. >> this didn't do the air quality any favors. if you saw smoke rising from alameda a few hours ago it was coming from this abandoned warehouse on west ranger avenue. fire crews took a defensive approach to keep the flames from neighboring buildings. still unclear how the fire started. firefighters say there was no one inside when they arrived but there were signs people had been there. the building has been vacant for several years. >>> new at 7:00 we have new v

it depends on where you are across the bay area. s around concord, mid-70s and hayward, and mid-60s for the coastline and half moon bay. tomorrow more of the same with wide-ranging temperatures, it just depends on where you are in san jose 82 and if you drive down to morgan hill about 10 degrees hotter, if you are in the east bay, livermore is at 91 but look at dublin reaching 83. that is all because we are seeing the cool westerly wind and ocean breeze bringing milder temperatures, but it does not make it over all of the hills and into all the valleys we will continue to see this weather pattern, also a strong area of high pressure causing record heat across the region. we can see minneapolis today is headed for 98, 108 around dallas, and widespread triple digits all across the west as this intense heat continues. there will be very little change in the overall weather pattern through the week. that high pressure slowly nudging off to the east, it really doesn't have too much of an impact on our weather, but will still be hot and so

it is just going to continue to move here through the bay area. we are looking at widespread clouds here from the north bay to the south bay with those spotty areas of drizzle. i do think by the afternoon right around 1:00 p.m. we're holding on to more of that cloud cover through the north bay, the bay and right down the peninsula. it will be a little bit cloudier here as we move through tomorrow. that will help the temperatures to stay cooler. as we bring it into the morning forecast, we'll start off with upper 50s and low 60s. 61 in the south bay. my temperatures through san francisco and also the north bay will be the chilliest here. 56 in san francisco. north bay at 58. daytime highs as we move through tomorrow. we'll drop off a couple of degrees because of that strong ocean breeze. this will leave us at 80 in san jose. over to east bay 88 in antioch. oakland at 67. right through the peninsula, 68 san mateo, san francisco the jacket is needed. the north bay we have 80 in sonoma. you go anywhere north of that and those temperatures are going to

this is nbc bay area news tonight. ask for joining us on this fourth of july holiday where we began with some developing news just outside of chicago. a mass shooting at a holiday parade. at least six people are dead. another 38 are hurt. tonight, a person of interest is in custody. we have the video just into our newsroom showing the moment police made this arrest. in the background, you can hear officers telling him to put his hands up. the officers then rush in. the shooting happened around 10:00 a.m. during the fourth of july festivities in highland park. that is a suburb about a half hour north of chicago. police say someone with a high- powered rifle started opening fire from a nearby rooftop, randomly targeting people enjoying the parade below. >> sounds i had never heard before. 10 seconds later, you hear people screaming bodies down and everyone starts scattering. >> the shooter initially got away. police found the rifle the sniper used at the scene. then, hours later, police announced a personal interest in t

smoke is drifting into parts of the bay area. our meteorologist is tracking all of that for us and is there an air quality advisory tomorrow because of this? >> there will be for the north bay and east bay. we have seen some of the smoke drift north. especially to lake tahoe area. a lot of that staying aloft. look at this slot from the pg&e cameras from the washburn fire. current conditions right now in the 70s. but, during the day we did see some 90s in that forecast. and, remember, we got a lot of dry brush out there. the humidity is low and that plays a big role in the fire. temperatures overnight, dipping down into the lower 70s. usually getting a nice recovery and the humidity. expecting to see the dry conditions yet again. high pressure. en it comes to the wildfire smoke. expert moderate conditions. upper air smoke is moving north, could impack the north bay and the east bay with a change in direction from the wind from the south/southeast. expect the hazy skies to return. the air quality right now it is okay. as we continue

so why is the bay area more expensive than other areas? and is there relief in sight at least any time soon? joining us tonight nate rose with the california grocers association, nate, thanks for being with us. and give us the blunt truth here. why is the bay area specifically more expensive than other places? >> sure. i don't think it will be locked on your bay area viewers, that it tends to be more expensive for a number of things and that holds true for groceries as well. so you think about, you know, very simple things like the cost of living tends to be higher in the bay area. you're going to have to pay higher wages for your labor force at a grocery store. that will filter its way into pricing and it's hard to look past the regulatory challenges that a lot of businesses deal with and certain jurisdictions, for example, you know, in the city of san francisco it might cost as much as 25% more for a grocer to have their garbage collected than a city just across the bridge. so you know there's a lot of different variables. it's worth rem

for the morning areas of low clouds across the inner bay.n more sunshine throughout the afternoon. temperature wise not a lot of change as we start the morning off in the 50s and low 60s, some drizzle possibly around the coast. and lunchtime temperatures in the 70s and 80s inland and our summer micro climate in full effect once again with 90s around the inland east bay and areas south and east of san jose. 60s from san francisco over to oakland. so chances of anymore monsoon moisture kicking off after the evening should move away from us with a lot of low clouds returning to the coast where the best chance for thundershowers should be across the sierra tomorrow and likely stay that way throughout the week. even though that monsoon is still active. southern california could be dealing with more thundershowers as we head towards thursday and friday. around the bay area san francisco, trending a little bit warmer as we head towards thursday, breezy and cool as we head through the weekend. so no record setting heat at least here locally. though

today the bay area's largest water agencies met to discuss that issue. i want to show you a new map from the drought monitor saying the entire region is in severe drought condition. in the south bay, valley water customers used 3% less water from 2021 to 2022, but the goal was to cut use by 15%. in san francisco, water demand has dropped since 2019 which is good, but they are hoping it goes lower to 2015 levels. >>> moving you forward now on the national baby formula shortage. abbott is producing formula at its plant and we are getting a closer look at how the shortage is impacting bay area low income families. statewide half of all eligible families are enrolled with the women infants and children program also known as wic. the special supplemental nutrition program. 80% of solely formula fed to supplement breast feeding. ceo spoke with chris sanchez about what steps she thinks the state should go to moving forward. >> you don't want to go to multiple stores only to find one brand that isn't a brand that their wic allows. maximum flexibility is what we a

we're seeing that around the bay area right now. san francisco, you heard about the san francisco marathon. well, hour by hour forecast for that tomorrow. coming up. and look at the temperature spread uniquely bay area this time of year. my forecast 50s and 60s and 70s and 80s and 90s and i could be correct because we've got that right now. 60s into oakland and 78 degrees around san jose. and we're at a comfortable 78 degrees and northwest wind 12 miles per hour. 80s for now around dublin. at this time tomorrow probably getting back into the 90s. we're going to see the inland east bay valleys warm up a little bit for sunday. 64 degrees into oakland with the wind out of the west at 22. there's the fog. over the golden gate bridge. the san francisco marathon tomorrow. similar conditions and may have some drizzle to start the morning. we saw that around the golden gate bridge in downtown san francisco probably by about mid- morning. that sea braze bringing in the fog but also helping our air quality here. notice the wind arrows. strong

jobina: part of building a bay area is finding solutions. in the south bay that is the effort following the discovery of an underground bunker filled with stolen items. san jose police, city leaders, and school officials spoke with amanda del castillo you. amanda: they recently outfitted with new cameras, locks, fencing, and other security measures to strengthen the campus parameter. district officials say they are familiar with challenges that come with being located near a large homeless encampment. >> we see the traffic in and out of the creek, but this is beyond that. amanda: the superintendent referencing this sophisticated bunker uncovered along nearby coyote creek. inside, 100 thousand dollars worth of stolen items, including power tools, equipment, and firearms. six people were arrested, facing felony possession of stolen property and weapons charges. >> regardless of being housed, we are going to treat as seriously as possible. amanda: it is that level of criminal activity most alarming to superintendent cruz. he says safety measures
