will transport in a lot more wildfire smoke, which has been sitting north of the bay area. tonight we are watching the start of the red flag warning for the north bay mountains. spare the air day tomorrow for wildfire smoke. plus likely to be the hottest day of the week ahead under the hazy conditions. first up the red flag warning has been expanded outward across napa county and portions of sonoma county, all of lake county now from 11:00 tonight through the day, probably into wednesday evening. what is causing that are these north winds, low humidity, daytime dry at night type wind behavior through the sacramento valley and higher peaks at the north bay another place to watch also the diablo range and maybe the santa cruz mountains for a time in the morning with exposure to the gusty, dry north winds. imagine the smoke, which has been sitting to the north in that north wind environment now has a transport system into the bay area so we'll see more smoke to start the day. a combination of that has prompted the spare the air day tomorrow. smoke advisory ongoing. worst air qu

the bay area, any point of the bay area we could see some of that rain coming in.of it up around clearlake and we'll see off and on showers. here lately we've started to see rain developing in the san jose area, moving over toward the willow glen, saratoga, and then moving just to the west of sunnyvale toward palo alto. off and on rain. we're only seeing that, as well, in parts of the south bay. but as it is still fairly dry in the tri-valley, we have a chance of showers and thunderstorms. if you're going to be out there, being active, it feels really humid even though our temperatures are slightly cooler than normal. so a look at our hour-by-hour forecast does show more activity developing going into the afternoon. parts of the tri-valley as well as the south bay may see showers and thunderstorms popping up. then looking at the next several days in morgan hill, it's going to start to get really hot. once that moisture moves out, our temperatures will reach into the mid 90s by wednesday. we're going to see those temperatures spiking by the middle of the week. thurs

we could have a couple sprinkles in the bay area. best chance is saturday morning in the north bay and along the coast. those showers won't last long. as this upper level storm system moves in, it kicks in a stronger onshore wind beginning tomorrow mainly after noon when the wind gusts in the inland parts of the bay area get up to the 15 to 20-mile-an-hour range, 25 to 40-mile-an-hour gusts along the coast and that onshore breeze will help start to improve our air quality. tracking just the surface level smoke with futurecast, tomorrow morning, very little change from where things stand now, basically the same concentrations of surface level smoke sending us into unhealthy air quality levels until later in the day. that's when some of that starts to get scoured out. as long as that fire is burning, the smith river complex, actually a collection of fires, still producing smoke. by friday morning i don't anticipate widespread good air quality over the next couple days. you can still see the haze on the horizon looking towards san jose.

the bay area missed most of that. but we have area of low pressure that continues spent along the coastline. you can see it rotating there and that picked up some of that moisture from hillary wrapping right back into the bay area. more scattered showers. in fact, we may not be done with that just yet. you see a few more raindrops begin to push into the north and again, this is some of that subtropical moisture. and that means a very moisture laden air. you can see some very heavy rain drops in a short amount of time. so watch out for that in the north bay right now that last band of moisture about to make its way onshore. that will bring in and do a hillary and the remnants. there's going to push much further to the north and the still damage has been done. we still have watches and advisories. even some warnings up across parts of california. special this hearing about some heavy storms. rowland, they're numerous thunderstorms up in that area as well. and some flooding continues. flood warnings continuing in the curr

bay area rain impacts, it doesn't look like heavy rain right now. we certainly would have the best chance of getting rainfall in the south bay because of how all of this is moving. last landfall of a california tropical storm or any tropical system for that matter since 1900 was back in 1939 near long beach. it just goes to show you how unusual it is to get something like this happening. i've got more details on the path, the timing and the rain here coming up in about a minute. let's roll it into our radar. we have thunderstorms over mt. hamilton moving to the north. expect the slight chance we could get pop-up thunderstorms in livermore, also through tracy in the next 30-45 minutes. tomorrow morning yes start off with fog. temperatures in the 60s from the south bay over to the peninsula. to the tri-valley, san francisco, 59 and for the north bay 58. daytime highs tomorrow, not too bad. at least it's not in the 100s. we'll get through this. 82 in napa, mid 80s in san jose. palo alto 82, san francisco 68. let's move it back into the tropical weather.

here is a view right now from our live cameras across the bay area. while air quality levels today were in the moderate range, it is going to be a much different outlook for tomorrow. we're also tracking a red flag warning extended into the north bay. let's bring in our meteorologist rob mayeda tracking several topics here in weather that is about to hit us. >> the driving factor behind it the change in the wind. a north wind. dry, inland breeze like that. lowers humidity levels and increases fire dangers. we have that to contend with. the reason for the red flag warning tonight in the north bay mountains but also that wind direction that is going to bring more wildfires smoke into the bay area over the next 24 hours. part of the reason why we have a spare the air alert for tomorrow. in terms of the red flag warning this did expand over the last 12 hours to include the eastern portion of napa county. again, right there along the sonoma county and napa county border. all of lake county from 11:00 tonight into tomorrow evening for dry, gusty winds at tim

i wouldn't be surprised if anywhere across the bay area you had a brief shower at some point because s ripe for some kind of rain to fall. right now most of it has been in the north bay moving through the sacramento valley where there's been a steady rain coming down and that's been rotating around an area of low pressure and moving into the north bay and off the coast where we've seen lightning. we're dealing with that and dealing with some fires. that increases the wildfire -- the humidity as well as seeing the near-surface smoke. so, unfortunately, we do have some slightly more unhealthy air quality today as the smoke continue to say move through, especially for the north bay. ce again, the target of singee the highest amount of particulate matter due to fires burning farther to the north. we're also watching out for the potential of some thunderstorms and lightning, and we're going to go into the afternoon with some of these cells starting to pop up in the north bay, but may also move into partsf the south bay, into the tri-valley for the afternoon. at the same time, it feels mugg

nbc bay area's ian cull joins us live near that fire scene. what's the latest? >> reporter: the so-called clayton fire burned 66 acres. you can see the fresh burn scar from south bay freeways, even. up close, you see how close it got to dozens of homes up here. firefighters have been out here throughout the day putting water on areas that are still smoking. i spoke with the family who lived next to where i'm standing. they have family in town for a wedding. we're in their backyard, watching the flames and smoke pour over the hill. luckily it stopped a couple hundred yards from their home. 30 houses were threatened when it sparked yesterday, but none were damaged. cal fire used air tankers, helicopters, and crews on the ground to put it out. david tufo is visiting family from new zealand and was especially concerned when he saw the flames approaching. >> for me, it was a bit scary to see the fire, you know? i never seen it in new zealand. a fire season, especially over 100 degrees, you know? anything could happen. >> ian, incredible to hear that no houses were dam

anything over 60 is very uncomfortable by bay area standards. everybody is above 60 for that dew point this evening. we are going to see these numbers gradually improve the next couple days. the moisture is also associated with the remnants of hilary, what's left of tropical storm eugene, the area of low pressure, the ripple in the atmosphere that's been swirling off the coast the past couple weeks tapping into the moisture associated with what's left of tropical storm, used to be hurricane hilary sending a chance of showers across the bay area. let's look at the radar loop the past couple hours. there's not much activity now. we had more a couple hours ago, but things have been trending in a drier, more settled direction, still some showers and thunderstorms in the sierra and more rain just off the coast that will try to swing back in as we head through this evening. that should be gradually quieting down the rest of town. numerous cloud-to-ground lightning strikes, but the good part of these tropical showers is they drop rain that hits the gro

thank you. >>> the northern california red cross is in southern california right now along with bay area rescue teams. in fact, a crew from the oakland fire department has helped out with several rescues in riverside county. they are expected to stay in the area through tomorrow. the red cross set up ten shelters in the hardest hit areas for anyone who may need them. >>> on to hawaii now, the president and first lady are on maui this hour touring the devastation there from the deadly wildfires. the bidens met with first responders and other officials as they walked around the ruins of historic lahaina. at least 114 people died in the fire in nearly two weeks after it erupted. hundreds more are still missing. the president says the federal government will help maui in the recovery effort as long as it takes. >> the country grieves with you, stands with you and we'll do everything possible to help you recover, rebuild, and respect culture and traditions when the rebuilding takes place. >> fema says it has distributed more than $8.5 million so far to about 8,000 maui families. >>> back in t

tim: also causing problems in the bay area. e oakland airport, dozens of flights were canceled on sunday. the delays are felt across the bay at sfo two. many passengers were left wondering when they might be able to take off. >> i was afraid of this but i was hoping that we would prevail. tim: despite the troubles several travelers are trying to keep the hope alive. >> fingers crossed. we hope we can make it there tonight. tim: in san francisco, tim johns. abc7news. j.r.: let's focus on the travel troubles as we look like out at sfo tonight. when you add it all up, hundreds of flights and countless passengers from oakland to chicago are being affected by the storms. southwest airlines, the busiest carrier for inter-california or flights saw 714 flights canceled today. a majority of them operating out of southern california. if you are planning to fly tomorrow, it is best to check with your airline on your flight status. united airlines has issued a hurricane travel waiver for southern california airports. that has never happened

low to mid 80s for inland parts of the bay area which is close to normal. eels a degree or two warmer because of the impact of the humidity. the fog will not be tremendously widespread. it will spread out around the bay but not make much of a push into the inland valleys by tomorrow afternoon. where it does it will back up quickly. it is a consequence of the weight of the atmosphere keeping marine layer short. we should see clearing along the coast as we head towards midday tomorrow. temperatures are a mix of upper 50s and a lot of low 60s, still with enough mugginess to keep the temperatures from cooling down very efficiently. high temperatures tomorrow are five to 10 degrees above average and close to 70 along the coast, mid-70s in san francisco with mid 80s for oakland and east bay. 90s down the peninsula, right around 90 in san jose and just above mid-90s for most parts of the north bay. the hotspots as usual are inland and the east bay hitting upper 90s, but not many 100 degree readings, even tomorrow. we are back to normal on friday before more of a gr
