the bay area, any point of the bay area we could see some of that rain coming in.of it up around clearlake and we'll see off and on showers. here lately we've started to see rain developing in the san jose area, moving over toward the willow glen, saratoga, and then moving just to the west of sunnyvale toward palo alto. off and on rain. we're only seeing that, as well, in parts of the south bay. but as it is still fairly dry in the tri-valley, we have a chance of showers and thunderstorms. if you're going to be out there, being active, it feels really humid even though our temperatures are slightly cooler than normal. so a look at our hour-by-hour forecast does show more activity developing going into the afternoon. parts of the tri-valley as well as the south bay may see showers and thunderstorms popping up. then looking at the next several days in morgan hill, it's going to start to get really hot. once that moisture moves out, our temperatures will reach into the mid 90s by wednesday. we're going to see those temperatures spiking by the middle of the week. thurs

rescue teams from the bay area have been deployed to the southland along with the northern california red cross. >>> an urban search and rescue from the east bay provided support and riverside county. spike in that instance they received a dispatch for persons in distress . when they arrived, the local rescuers were on scene completing the rescue so they stood by as additional resource and state the for them. >> the team of 60 members is expected to stay in southern california at least through tomorrow. >>> the states to largest school districts cancel classes. los angeles unified and san diego unified told students to stay home. for san diego today was supposed to be their first day of class. governor newsom declared a state of emergency. the governor says more than 3900 chp officers were moved to southern california along with 2000 caltrans workers, 350 california national guard soldiers, and nearly 30s with water urban search and rescue teams . that includes some local rescue crews. >>> at home, travel plans are being interrupted. if you plan on traveling today , dozens of flights

we could have a couple sprinkles in the bay area. best chance is saturday morning in the north bay and along the coast. those showers won't last long. as this upper level storm system moves in, it kicks in a stronger onshore wind beginning tomorrow mainly after noon when the wind gusts in the inland parts of the bay area get up to the 15 to 20-mile-an-hour range, 25 to 40-mile-an-hour gusts along the coast and that onshore breeze will help start to improve our air quality. tracking just the surface level smoke with futurecast, tomorrow morning, very little change from where things stand now, basically the same concentrations of surface level smoke sending us into unhealthy air quality levels until later in the day. that's when some of that starts to get scoured out. as long as that fire is burning, the smith river complex, actually a collection of fires, still producing smoke. by friday morning i don't anticipate widespread good air quality over the next couple days. you can still see the haze on the horizon looking towards san jose.

anything over 60 is very uncomfortable by bay area standards. everybody is above 60 for that dew point this evening. we are going to see these numbers gradually improve the next couple days. the moisture is also associated with the remnants of hilary, what's left of tropical storm eugene, the area of low pressure, the ripple in the atmosphere that's been swirling off the coast the past couple weeks tapping into the moisture associated with what's left of tropical storm, used to be hurricane hilary sending a chance of showers across the bay area. let's look at the radar loop the past couple hours. there's not much activity now. we had more a couple hours ago, but things have been trending in a drier, more settled direction, still some showers and thunderstorms in the sierra and more rain just off the coast that will try to swing back in as we head through this evening. that should be gradually quieting down the rest of town. numerous cloud-to-ground lightning strikes, but the good part of these tropical showers is they drop rain that hits the gro

i wouldn't be surprised if anywhere across the bay area you had a brief shower at some point because s ripe for some kind of rain to fall. right now most of it has been in the north bay moving through the sacramento valley where there's been a steady rain coming down and that's been rotating around an area of low pressure and moving into the north bay and off the coast where we've seen lightning. we're dealing with that and dealing with some fires. that increases the wildfire -- the humidity as well as seeing the near-surface smoke. so, unfortunately, we do have some slightly more unhealthy air quality today as the smoke continue to say move through, especially for the north bay. ce again, the target of singee the highest amount of particulate matter due to fires burning farther to the north. we're also watching out for the potential of some thunderstorms and lightning, and we're going to go into the afternoon with some of these cells starting to pop up in the north bay, but may also move into partsf the south bay, into the tri-valley for the afternoon. at the same time, it feels mugg

bay area rain impacts, it doesn't look like heavy rain right now. we certainly would have the best chance of getting rainfall in the south bay because of how all of this is moving. last landfall of a california tropical storm or any tropical system for that matter since 1900 was back in 1939 near long beach. it just goes to show you how unusual it is to get something like this happening. i've got more details on the path, the timing and the rain here coming up in about a minute. let's roll it into our radar. we have thunderstorms over mt. hamilton moving to the north. expect the slight chance we could get pop-up thunderstorms in livermore, also through tracy in the next 30-45 minutes. tomorrow morning yes start off with fog. temperatures in the 60s from the south bay over to the peninsula. to the tri-valley, san francisco, 59 and for the north bay 58. daytime highs tomorrow, not too bad. at least it's not in the 100s. we'll get through this. 82 in napa, mid 80s in san jose. palo alto 82, san francisco 68. let's move it back into the tropical weather.

damian trujillo, nbc bay area news. >> pretty incredible to see that. thank you. >>> extra security at an east bay elementary school. classes were canceled yesterday because of a bomb threat with racial undertones. the threats are tied to a playdate event held for students of color last weekend. this is all happening at chabot elementary. oakland unified said 80 to 95% of students were back in class today, but several parents tell us they did choose to keep their kids home fearing for safety and mental health. threats began after an invitation for a weekend playdate for black, brown and aaip students was posted join loan and went viral that triggered racist and threatening comments which called the event a form of segregation meant to exclude white students. today the school district provided mental health resources for student, and officials say teachers had age appropriate discussions about this issue in class. but one parent tells us despite the district's efforts, her son decided to leave school early. >> i went to the class with him and saw the circ

this is "nbc bay area news tonight." thanks for being with us. rogue driverless cars and some exclusive information about the los gatos party mom. that's just ahead. >>> but we start with the aftermath of hilary. the tropical storm swept through southern california yesterday, bringing heavy rain, winds, and mudslides. one of the hardest-hit areas is palm springs. in fact, this region got the most rain it's ever seen in a single day in recorded history. that rain sent quicksand-like mud through the nearby city of cathedral city. it cut off main roads and triggered rescues. crews used bulldozers to reach about a dozen people trapped at an assisted living facility. we'll be talking to that city's fire chief about these rescues in just a few minutes. >>> in san bernardino county, destructive flooding hit something mountain communities there. this is in oak glen, where main roads transformed into rushing rivers. a river of boulders nearly took out a fire station. you see it there. waters in the santa ana river also washing out huge trees and sent mud

nbc bay area's ian cull joins us live near that fire scene. what's the latest? >> reporter: the so-called clayton fire burned 66 acres. you can see the fresh burn scar from south bay freeways, even. up close, you see how close it got to dozens of homes up here. firefighters have been out here throughout the day putting water on areas that are still smoking. i spoke with the family who lived next to where i'm standing. they have family in town for a wedding. we're in their backyard, watching the flames and smoke pour over the hill. luckily it stopped a couple hundred yards from their home. 30 houses were threatened when it sparked yesterday, but none were damaged. cal fire used air tankers, helicopters, and crews on the ground to put it out. david tufo is visiting family from new zealand and was especially concerned when he saw the flames approaching. >> for me, it was a bit scary to see the fire, you know? i never seen it in new zealand. a fire season, especially over 100 degrees, you know? anything could happen. >> ian, incredible to hear that no houses were dam

we have dense fog hanging close over san francisco and some of our bay area bridges. do be careful if you have to head out the door the next couple of minutes and seeing it linger through parts of the north bay over san rafael but typical of the bay area to warm up as we go on into the afternoon. not all of us will see this warming trend we have in store. not only for today, but for tomorrow. we're looking at 80s to 90s in the forecast and as we head on into our warmer day of the weekend which is tomorrow, enjoying last couple of summer days before kids head back to school, we might see triple-digit temperatures return in the forecast, even as we go on into next week and we will continue to monitor the chance of thunderstorms over the sierra and how close they could get to the bay area. i wanted to turn our attention quickly to what's going on in maui and lahaina. of course when the fires broke out, a very strong wind gusts, upwards to 60 to 80 miles an hour. now down to 10 miles. we'll bring you latest right here on nbc bay area. >> cinthia, thanks. take it from there

but right now in the bay area, we are dry. but as you can see, there is a line of showers trying to make its way into the north bay. but for the most part, very dry yet muggy day out there. so subtropical moisture out in full force, especially in this year, starting to notice those light showers through streaming through south lake tahoe and kirkwood and for southern california, they're just getting inundated with not only widespread light rain but even pockets of moderate to heavy downpours over los angeles and a riverside as well. widespread light rain right now for those of you in san diego. but for us in the bay area, we're going to see some light scattered hit or miss showers overnight your monday morning. continuing throughout most of your monday evening as well. we could see severe weather well to our east, but overall, just about a 10th of an inch of rain or less is expected and no thunderstorms threats expected for us here in the bay area. in fact, are tracking cooler cloudier conditions to start your work week monday

will transport in a lot more wildfire smoke, which has been sitting north of the bay area. tonight we are watching the start of the red flag warning for the north bay mountains. spare the air day tomorrow for wildfire smoke. plus likely to be the hottest day of the week ahead under the hazy conditions. first up the red flag warning has been expanded outward across napa county and portions of sonoma county, all of lake county now from 11:00 tonight through the day, probably into wednesday evening. what is causing that are these north winds, low humidity, daytime dry at night type wind behavior through the sacramento valley and higher peaks at the north bay another place to watch also the diablo range and maybe the santa cruz mountains for a time in the morning with exposure to the gusty, dry north winds. imagine the smoke, which has been sitting to the north in that north wind environment now has a transport system into the bay area so we'll see more smoke to start the day. a combination of that has prompted the spare the air day tomorrow. smoke advisory ongoing. worst air qu
