this is air that -- we're seeing it across the bay area. what are you dealing with there in the south bay? >> reporter: we can definitely see it. down soun san jose in the distance, you can see the haze and smell it, although it's not as bad as it was, in my opinion, as it was last night where it took a dive before the dinnertime hour. we know those bad air quality conditions are going to continue as kari said all throughout the nine bay area counties, but not everybody is going to feel the bad air to the same extent. yesterday, san francisco bore the brunt, and at one point they measured the worst air in the entire nation. for now, some areas are seeing just a bit of improvement. >> it's south of the golden gate. north of the golden gate, the north bay, there is some improvement. those occur in high-elevation areas. >> the air quality deteriorated yesterday, forcing several bay area law enforcement agencies, including the marin sheriff and santa clara police, to put out alerts because so many people were calling 911 to report the smell of s

and earlier today, that sent that smoke across the bay area. e roll through tomorrow, more unhealthy air for the bay, east bay, south bay. could dip into a moderate area along the coastline. i'm expected improvement air quality by friday and saturday. beyond this, we are looking at rain chances developing in the pacific. more details on the microclimate forecast. as we take you to the pattern, what we're looking at here is head through tomorrow and thursday. as an area of low pressure to the north. that will keep the smoke in the bay area and mix many with fog. and friday and saturday, the second system will move in from the south. that's when i think should help to clear out that smoke. as we head through tomorrow morning's forecast, will feel strange with the smoggy conditions out. temperatures in the 50s. down to 56 in the east bay. san francisco 57. 55s in the north bay. temperatures tomorrow afternoon, at least we don't have to deal with heat. that's going to leave us with 78 here in napa. over to concord, 82. 80s in the south bay. palo alt

for the bay area. there's where they are. one on folsom street, oakland and pittsburg. target has a lot of stores around the country and a lot in the bay area. that's almost what makes this hurt even more is that they're really pin pointing these areas that are struggling with crime especially on the retail level. and, once again, another body blow to the bay area economy. >> target is not mincing words, right? target said crime is killing business. >> we've heard that from places like whole foods and other stores, and nordstrom's, that specifically said it's not the business climate -- although the business climate is struggling when it comes to malls and retail stores -- but they are saying it's because of the safety of their customers and their staff, and that's why they're pulling out. and that gets to the heart of the issue in the bay area, that has a strong economy and a lot of people working, et cetera, et cetera, but there are crime problems. and retail theft is a huge crime problem. it's hitti

okay, let's move it back into the bay area weather and that storm system should be over the bay area central california saturday and also sunday. now, the rainfall itself will be to the north and also to the west of us by tomorrow night. then we're going to get into some scattered rain chances here on saturday morning, and then we're going to hold onto the spotty chances here even through saturday afternoon. so right now it does not look widespread for us, and then by sunday it looks like it positions itself more off to the east, so that would mean lower rain chances on sunday's forecast the way we see it now. overall trace amounts to about a quarter of an inch here for the bay area. so on that seven day forecast what you'll see in san francisco, a little bit of wind tomorrow. 15 to 30, best chance of some scattered rain on saturday, and then chances on sunday only 20% right now. and then as we head into next week, we're going to watch out for some warmer weather. right there in san francisco we'll get into some 70s by tuesday, wednesday, and thursday. and across the inland valleys w

we're talking about all that haze, tracking that smoke north of us right into the bay area. it's triggering an air quality tomorrow. air slightly clear in the south bay. the sky is a little bit bluer in walnut creek but you can smell the smoke in parts of the bay area. our oakland and emeryville cameras you can see look really gray. joining me is jeff ranieri. it felt like you were in a nonstop barbecue all day long. when do we get to leave the barbecue? >> the time line that we're going to show you here when we pull up the weather computer back behind me is that the smoke at this point will continue to drop down from the north as we head through tomorrow. so i'm not really seeing a huge change tomorrow. fires burning in oregon, two large fires in california. there's that smoke plume right there. we continue 10 see this haze moving across the bay area. the air quality, all of the bay area remains unhealthy except for the coast. by friday night into saturday, a marked pattern change, a system moving in from the south should help to clear this out and give us much better weathe

the bay area tuesday. the good news is models, put this together little bit more as we get a little bit closer. that's usually a pretty good sign that maybe look like a huge event, but certainly do not see some rain make its way back in the bay area. temperatures tomorrow going to be the 60's in the san francisco out along the coastline. maybe a little bit warmer. a little more sunshine there in the 60's and again, but on the hazy side and breezy in the afternoon, as you work your way down the peninsula, those temperatures warm up the mid 70's as we head toward palo alto. 79 in santa clara, 79 in az in san jose, east bay. temperatures up in the 70's and low 80's to do so again. expect that poor air quality again for tomorrow. and that may be on the increase by the afternoon and the evening hours and over the next couple days, though, it looks like that is going to start to mix out more of a typical weather pattern setting in on friday, the first day of fall and then saturday and sunday, not bad, by next mo

so we still have a lot of haze showing up in the bay area. skies here is our live camera looking out toward the bay bridge. we should be able to show you san francisco, but that is not possible right now. with all that haze and all that smoke drifting in the forecast model, the upper level wind pattern is coming in from the north. so as a result, it's transporting still some of that haze and that smoke in your thursday morning forecast. once again tomorrow morning, we could actually have some really poor levels. and then once again into the afternoon hours, that smoke continues to move in from the north. we'll have to keep an eye on the friday forecast, maybe some improvement as we have a little bit more of a westerly breeze off the pacific. that could help clean out the air. maybe eventually some rain showers. we'll talk about that with your forecast update in a little bit. okay, mark, thank you. president biden meets with israel's prime minister. we'll tell you about the difficult issues discussed and also the pledge tha the two ♪ there it i

we'll back up and look at other parts of the bay area inland and the east bay. you miss out on these. this is going to be that type of event, mostly in the 10 to 20% range. around the bay you get closer to the 30 to 40 to 50% chance of at least passing showers. the highest rain chances are for the north bay where we have rain chances in the 50 to 70% range. it's not a guarantee you'll get rain in your neighborhood, but it's a pretty good chance, especially when you consider this is still late september. usually rain chances wait until october to ramp up more. this system also prompted a high surf warning in effect for coastal parts of the bay area from 5:00 a.m. tomorrow through 11:00 tuesday. the parent storm system swirling away well to our northwest will be sending possibly 20-foot breakers to those coastal regions. don't turn your back on the water tomorrow. we'll be back with a look at futurecast, show you how the rain evolves this evening coming up in a few minutes. >>> let's take a live look a capitol hill where a government shutdown is looming unless con

air quality has been bad pretty much across the entire bay area. let's take a look at the latest air quality reading from the purple air sensors. they update more frequently than the epa sensors. you see all of the orange and red dots on the map indicating unhealthy air quality ratings. i think we might see slow improvement tomorrow and friday , but in terms of removing the smoke from the atmosphere entirely, that is not likely to happen until the weekend. we have the red flag warning in effect for the north bay mountains at 11:00 tonight, continuing through this time tomorrow. the north bay mountains and solano county will have offshore winds gusting at 30 to 40 miles per hour and humidity levels low enough to elevate the wildfire threat, so we hope that what we are dealing with, we do not see new fires adding to that amount of smoke closer to home. we will take a look at the long-range air quality outlook in just a few minutes. >>> one look outside shows the widespread impact of wildfires. a new study by stanford reveals how smoke wildfires might

a smoky sky blankets the bay area. this is "today in the bay." >>> a very good morning to you. thank you for starting your day with us. 5:00 right now. i am laura garcia. >> i am marcus washington. we are going to get a look at the weather conditions in a moment, but first let's begin with the breaking news. >> kris sanchez is live at the scene. i understand the scene is clear now? >> reporter: we're down here on the feeder part, because it's not safe to be on that part of the freeway and that may be part of the problem, part of the reason that accident happened. it happened just after 10:00 last night. the person did die here at the scene on highway 92 near the delaware street exit around 10:00 last night. according to a chp lieutenant, the officer was driving eastbound on highway 92 when the person ran out in front of the patrol car and was hit and killed. the patrol car was a marked patrol car and this is part of highway 92 where the lieutenant says pedestrians are not supposed to be on the roadway. the coroner took the victim from the scene and that person did die at the sc

how many towers are there in the bay area? >> it is unclear in the bay area but across the state of california there are 500 of these watchtowers, what doug told me today even though there is drone technology and ai technology that is currently being used with the fire teams nothing can replace the knowledge and expertise that comes with his level of experience of being a firefighter. >> absolutely. great story. thank you very much. thanks for their volunteer work. >>> okay. let's get to paul hegen who has had his work cut out for him keeping us updated. >> marin county is excluded from this one. inland north bay and this goes into effect at 11:00 this evening and through 5:00 p.m. tomorrow. it is relatively short duration, 18 hours that we have to track the off shore winds coming out of the north and really specifically impacting northern napa counties. gusts, 35-40 miles an hour. low humidity levels. we are not talking about critical fire weather conditions where the humidity is lower than 10%, gusting over 15 miles an hour.

i talked about this being felt throughout the bay area. >> absolutely. and it's not just one area that's seeing it worse than other areas. we can all smell it this morning and it has been pretty bad. but we are also seeing it in the unhealthy range, which has changed quite a bit since this time yesterday. so we are going to continue to need to limit our time outside, limit that exposure, as we're seeing a change in the weather conditions that's bringing that smoke directly down into the bay area. the fires have been burning for weeks now and the smoke is coming in from oregon, northern california, but yesterday the concentration got so bad that we thought the fire was a lot closer. as we go into the next couple of days between friday and saturday, another low will be pushing in and that's going to bring in some fresher breezes. but in the meantime, we do still have to deal with drifts of smoke coming in and plumes of it at times getting a lot more concentrated, especially early in the morning when we see it get trapped near the surface, and especially in

we are going to monitor the air quality around the bay area for today. atching out for this, because of the high winds and the low humidity in parts of the north bay, there's a high fire danger in the areas highlighted in red, and they are under a red flag warning. we will see once again the potential of the high fire conditions as the gusts reach 35 to 45 miles per hour. this is for elevations above 1,000 feet with that low humidity. at the same time we have fires burning further to the north. a complex of fires sparked by lightning is still continuing to burn and the smoke is coming directly down into the bay area. we are seeing it basically concentrating in the north bay and along the coastline right now, but that will start to move back in. here we are at 3:00 this evening. we see the smoke just off the coast and around san francisco, but that's going to be moving in once again in time for kickoff this evening, so air quality may get a little worse. that's something we will continue to monitor before we see things improving tomorrow afternoon. the tem
