although it was it kennedy ministration this was the bay of pigs and the beginning of the war in vietnam. and studds was opposed to both of those things. he was never able to get anywhere in raising these issues. he was an extremely junior person. so he took a side job temporary leaving his position with an interagency group that was actually planning volunteers and service to america.when he was done with the assignment which was quite successful, he then had to reapply for his position at state. the process dragged on and on. his friends were interviewed, he has assumed he would get this job back. it did not happen. he couldn't quite figure out why but in his memoir he said it was beginning to dawn on me that they had suspicions about my sexual identity. which he had very much shut down and was living very much in the closet. sure enough, after he kept pushing to find out what had happened, he was led into an office with a psychiatrist. and he realized that they were not going to let him back. so now here he is, a young adult driven out of his first job he had for reasons that are myst

one of the things that came out was the bay of pigs, which was the invasion of cuba supported by the united states and the cia. which led to the cuban missile crisis in which castro led -- castro allowed missiles that could almost hit any target in the united states, nuclear missiles to be housed and made operational in cuba. of course this is a picture of castro and khrushchev. -- castrot visiting moscow just prior to the cuban missile crisis. when america discovers russia placed intercontinental missiles on the island of cuba, jfk went in front of the united nations in september of and said we have 1961 to meet the challenges of our age and put into effect berlin, that dealt with the wall in berlin germany, , laos, south vietnam and so forth. america was introduced for the first time very seriously to the atomic bomb, because there were missiles so close to the u.s. this is a picture i made in los angeles of school kids being taught about the effect of the bomb and how they had run into the halls and protect themselves. and to me it kind of shows you this duck and recovery situatio

in 1961, he had a face-to-face with john kennedy and he was withering in his criticism about the bay of pigs in terms of john kennedy saying that the operation should never have been approved. believed the united states should defend western europe, the greatest threat would be from the soviet union. during the 1952 presidential campaign, dwight -- dwight court eisenhower blasted the truman administration for reneging on aid. eisenhower, it was exploited. the truman administration had turned a good neighbor policy into a poor neighbor policy, he charged. eisenhower promised change. change came home and not for the better, at least as perceived i latin america. the president and secretary of state did not have the same views as dean acheson. they ruled the u.s. could not abide by the nonintervention principle. when i first discovered this in the documents, it was already ducted. but if you look hard, you can find the drafted memorandums, the actual passage where the u.s. ruled it could not abide by the nonintervention principle. dulles also implicitly accepted george kennan's advice that in t

this bay of pigs disaster that you can read about in the textbook. it doesn't work at all. and so slowly but surely castro goes through cuba's economy and they start kicking out all of the american businesses, nationalizing things like the oil refineries and we start kicking out american businesses. you'll remember dollar diplomacy from several lectures ago, the united states gets very interested. and so in 1962 the united states puts an embargo on cuba. we are not allowed to expo export/import goods from cuba. which still exists although there's much discussion about lifting it. so we'll see how that plays out ultimately. a funny story about the embargo, john f. kennedy really loved cuban cigars, who wouldn't, right? so the day before he's about to sign the embargo, he asks his press secretary to buy as many cuban cigars as he could possibly get his hands on. he gets his hands on 1200 cigars, delivers them to the president and three minutes later john f. kennedy signs the embargo. so jfk got his cigars, right? that's not the end of the story, of course. because now that cub
