beata: in terms of the u.k.orecast, it is much higher because the conviction is that higher food prices, higher energy prices are going to hit. core inflation is much lower, around 6% and more in line with where consensus is. the winter is coming and energy prices, as we discussed before, continue to stay high. you have got the emerging bet that there will be inflationary pressures coming into the winter. tom: we are expecting 10% earnings growth this year and where the earnings contractions when we factor in this gas shock? beata: this is one of my biggest earnings, that earnings expectations -- biggest worries, that earnings expectations have to come down. they are classified for the next year. to be fair, they exclude the commodities sectors. it is a more reasonable 2% for this year and 10% for next year. adding to the economy forecast, we are going to anticipate 5% inflation in the euros on next year. that is quite bullish. i think it could come to the negative number for this year. the pain will be concentr

beata: this is unprecedented broad-based selloff. we have to go back to the start, to the main reason for businesses on the back edge of this year is coming back to your point at the beginning, this tighter market. we are always worried that the prospect of higher rates with high volatility and valuations for that particular part of the market will make it vulnerable. tom: is this a transitory change or is it a substantial reconfiguration of the market now? beata: if we drive the rotation and the surge of real yields, this is the key to determining how the market is going to move further. overall markets with the current selloff, our targets for the year and are much more attractive, so we see the upside for the european and u.s. equity prices. but in terms of the leadership, the real yields will continue to move higher so we have negative 25 basis points in our forecast for this year. that would imply that we are not all the way through the rotation into value on to growth stocks that we have gotten so far. we are pricing up and we

beata: good morning. surprisingly strong first half of the year, the effects of the energy crisis are being felt in emerging europe. under the scenario of no gas from russia, the situation will get even worse. that means relative to our baseline forecast, gdp growth would be lower by 1.3%. emerging europe may be in for a long and deep winter. francine: what is bleak? how bad can it actually get if the damages for much longer? there is so much speculation, how ugly can this get? beata: a lot of emerging countries in europe relied heavily on natural gas for heat production, about three quarters of he production in hungary, for in serbia come from natural gas. heating homes will be difficult. and prices of natural gas are already at historical highs in europe. these prices have not been passed on to households, the retail costs of heating. if things get worse, that means not only shortages but also higher inflation. tom: betaa i want to get your views on inflation shortly, do you start to factor in blackouts

beata: no problem. would say the bernstein bottom up view to get the economic perspective still that there is tremendous support and the overall output. what we are seeing is why you see manufacturing when you have services rebounding. the real issue has been in goods. services are coming back. you just said it earlier. consumers are coming back. families are traveling again. we do have to be careful on the lower end for consumers especially, but what we see broadly is still support for that strong economic. lisa: one aspect of the debate on this show repeatedly has been what the investment thesis is around what is going on in washington, d.c. we have seen mostly dysfunction, but they are working to get something done. how do you price and the idea of more fiscal stimulus, but also the idea of higher corporate taxes. beata: we think the market is acknowledging the corporate tax rate will move up a couple of percentage points. you are looking at a mid-single digit earnings hit, so there is some vulnerabi

jonathan: thank you as always, beata kirr. wall street will focus a lot on that core month over month figure. the estimate so far, 0.5% in our survey. a lot of the country will be focused on the year-over-year headline figure. the estimate, 8.2%. a little bit lower from 8.3. all of that could change but that is the survey so far. tom: lisa mentioned it, the inflation really matters. we have been nonequity today. i want to mention the lift that we saw in equities yesterday afternoon. the calculation of free cash flow forward, out of these shocks, including the inventory battle moving from just in time to just in case inventory through the pandemic. the analysis of what free cash flow will do into the end of the year and next year, to me, is a massive mystery. jonathan: you have to pay attention to how the market response to that. i think it is notable. if i was wrong, i would not have mentioned it. tom: at 8:40 a.m. yesterday you were buying out of the money target. jonathan: we both got the message. tk's unreal yield. i will d

beata: let's put it this way.ast year was a bad year for the markets, and quite ok actually remarkably resilient era for the economic perspective and from the earnings perspective for the corporate sector as well. i think perhaps this year as we see recession hitting europe and later on in the second half of the year in the u.s., it might be a worse year for the economy and for the equity fundamentals, but perhaps not as bad year for the markets overall from the current levels i have around 7% upside for the european equities . u.s. strategy is less for the u.s. perhaps because of what you quoted. but really for the time being, i think there is still quite a lot of uncertainty. so i think the markets will be [indiscernible] for a few more months. european markets there is more happening for these potentially falling earnings as my models suggest later in the year when inflation is peaking and the central banks do the last hike. dani: can we dig into some of the sectors they are? i have banking on the mind because

beata: in principle, yes. is if they have gone too hard, if the tightening has gone too far and we get a deeper than expected the session, then it would be, of course, a negative catalyst for stocks going forward. it is not in our forecast, right? for earnings for next year we have quite conservative assumptions in line with this recession call we have. and i still get 3% upside on earnings. so, for delivering of earnings i don't mean huge upside, i just want to have a positive side there. sonali: what does it mean? you have the ecb, bank of japan, and federal reserve going in different directions at different paces. how confusing will that become for investors? beata: i think most of the central banks are going to go in the right -- with the exception of the bank of japan, but of course if they are coming from completely different levels. we had the ecb going first in june. we have the fed going in july. and the bank of england in august. so, quite coordinated cuts going forward. for three of them for next ye

beata joins us kirrr -- right now, beata joins us of alliancebernstein. how do you see this through 2021? beata: we see the same things the market has been focusing on for the past year. the offsetting force is the fiscal support and monetary support that is providing tremendous mental and liquidity to the market. i think what you have seen over the course of the last few weeks is really a recognition that so many people were waiting for event risk around the election and have reengaged with the market as there is more clarity around that. so i think we have to wrestle with those two forces. jonathan:jonathan: i think a lot of people are also thinking about whether we would have regime change away from the monetary policy regime to the fiscal policy regime. i do wonder, for you, where you are sitting right now. what regime are we in? that: we are in a regime has been coordinated. what we saw in the first quarter was an incredible response both in times of's -- both in terms of speed and magnitude. then over the summer, it has been frustrating to not see t

beata: international is not one monolith either. you've got to really split up what is happening in the developed international markets from the emerging markets. as you know, china is about 1/3 of the emerging markets benchmark. so let me go to europe. they have been lagging from a vaccination perspective. as you look at the u.s. market relative to our vaccination rate, as vaccinations went up, the market rallied. we think the industry is primed to follow suit. the european market is leaning into financials, industrials, more consumer discretionary names as we see more opportunities from that perspective, as well as valuation in the developed international space. lisa: i am going to steal a question from jonathan ferro, who has been on this issue for a long time. why not just on the index? there's a question of the role of active management at a time of such a strong growth. there is diversification under the index headline level, and yet, if you own the index, you have outperformed. why is that not going to work going forward? bea

beata: the positioning. the biggest risk is the positioning overall in particular for europe does not happen very often, it has gone very stretched. we are almost at a normalized historical highs in terms of positioning. in terms of entering into the earnings season, we think this year will be particularly important and the focus of the investors will be on the eps delivery. many sectors have gone to stretched valuations. even if they can deliver on earnings they can be justified. i think that's rational for delivery is quite high. how much sonali: pressure is there on the bottom lines. . further deceleration of inflation. we are seeing a number of companies not willing or able to meet expectations given the expense line. how much risk is there there? beata: the dynamics of inflation could definitely put pressure. we only see proper margin compression in deeper eps for sessions. the set up for this year, the dynamics to watch is eps broadening. last year has been quite subdued growth. let eps -- flat eps. un

beata:. we don't think so. we track your time the styles frame much. -- we try not to attack -- to track of the styles very much. earnings growth is contracting and economic growth is contracting so we see more of an opportunity in quality growth. it is the kind of growth you have. quality growth companies have really taken a hit. they are not saying the same hit on their balance sheets and earnings power. jonathan: those names have a massive waiting on the nasdaq. can i just do that passively to the index? beata: we think now is the time for stock selection. you have to be careful in this environment. it has been a tough year for active managers. that's perfect -- that pivot has been difficult to navigate. it is easy to say this is a stockpicking environment, it is harder to pick the stocks. alphabet versus facebook, another example. lisa: how about where the leadership is going to come from? if you have that pivot, you will get to the rally from the big tech stocks. you have that kind of, but not entirely. th
