beltway is moving along. follow us on twitter at first4traffic. >>> metro begins a major project that could make you late to work. the escalator replacement project kicks off today at one of the busiest stations in our area. megan mcgrath is live at the bethesda metro station where you'll see these changes immediately. >> reporter: we are riding along this escalator and look at this thing. it's absolutely enormous. 106 feet long. the second longest escalator in the western hemisphere and they'll start one by one swapping out these escalators. that means that folks who use bethesda metro station will have one less escalator to get you where you need to go and that could cause some tie-ups for folks certainly during the rush hour. these escalators are over 30 years old. they break down. they have been an issue and they need to be swapped out. they'll do the work one escalator at a time. so you will always have two in working order. one going up and one going down but you will lose that third escalator. the work
