ben levy is with us tonight along with two of the first responders. nice to have everyone here. ben, we'll start with you. as we listen to you and you joined us. you were nice to join us the day of the crash. first an foremost, how are you feeling? >> it's been a wild ride the last several days. it's been emotional, it's been g busy. a lot of media reaching out after you put me on air. just trying to cope with the whole thing and every day learning more about it. quite frankly i was an amateur there sitting next to a professional here. >> we we in the green room before we began tonight's show. you were essentially reunited there. lieutenant you're in charge here. what's happening. you get the call about the plane crash and all of the sudden you're in go mode, correct? >> i heard it in my office and i turned and could actually see the plane where it was catching on fire and the smoke coming up. and all of my units immediately responded to the scene. and it was pretty amazing. i ran down the hallway down to my car with my sergeant and i was going to the scene and i immediately too

one of them, ben levy tells us it was emotional, some people cried while others remained silent. the return for his return, to try to become closer with his fellow survivors. the only people on the planet who can understand what he experienced when the plane crashed into the runway saturday morning. >> it was an event that we will remember for life. we'll never forget it. and so getting to know a little bit the people that were in that plane and with me i think helps me perhaps deal a little bit better. >> reporter: in other developments with relation to the investigation, the ntsb say it is pilot told investigators that a bright light temporarily blinded him during final approach, about 34 seconds out from impact, around the same time that the cockpit realize thad the plane was flying too low and too slow for a safe landing. the ntsb doesn't know what that light was, whether it might have been someone pointing a laser at the cockpit or something else. and after the plane crashed, the cockpit crew waited 90 seconds before ordering an evacuation of the aircraft. they actually told

that patient ben levy stopped to share his harrowing story. >> those are the people in the hospital with their families. >> reporter: benjamin levy is a venture capitalist who lives in san francisco. he says it seemed like the pilot underestimated the start of the runway. >> the guy started to push the throttle back up again and there was water splashing onto the engine. i think we were almost landing on the water. >> reporter: he says it appeared to have happened in slow motion. >> i thought maybe we'll take off again and we didn't and went down pretty hard and bounced. >> reporter: levy was one of 53 patients obrought to sf general. the first ten were in critical condition. one more critical patient has arrived and six still in coming up next one of whom is a child. >> the internal injuries would be head injuries and bleeding of we also saw spinal injuries and other bone injuries, contusions. >> reporter: some of the victims also suffered serious burps. benjamin levy thought he was more seriously injured than he was. >> they took me to the hospital and took x-rays and i have nothing br

he spoke with ben levy at the hospital, what did he tell you about what happened inside the plane? >> before i get into what he told me john. what i found extraordinary is that there was blood on his shirt, you could see the cuts on his head and he described it like a roll er coaster ride, he was laughing about it, when you go through something like this, you are so traumaized. 15 are being admitted and six in critical condition, ben was allowed to leave the hospital, he was able to walk out. he is shaken up and you will be too when you hear what he told us. listen to what he said. >> it was like a six flags show, right? you are tied up to your chair and we were skipping to run way and i felt that we were going to go up and i thought we were going to go up and attempt another landing but we went back down again, it felt like slow motion, i was still tied to my chair. until i unbuckled and the whole row was crushed on the chairs behind. >> he said that he feels lucky, he was sitting right next to the exit door, he was one of the last passengers to leave, helping other passengers get

according to witnesses, including ben levy, this boeing approached the runway, and the tail clipped the runway and the tail came off, and the spin ended up just short of taxiway f there. now with want to show you a map of this airport. this is essentially runways 1-9, r and l and also 1 from this direction. this is 2-8 l, where the airplane is currently right now. that's where the crash happened. this is 2-8 r. that's the longest runway that sfo has. it handles the biggest airplanes and it's over 11,000 feet long. this runway is over 10,000 feet long. these two runways will remain closed until the ntsb concludes its investigation. and more just as importantly, the ntsb is going to canvas this area, because that's where damage is on the runway. they want to make sure the runway is safe because they start having planes take off and land. it could be several days before all four runways are open again. that will impact air travel for days to come. >> so a huge domino effect. teach, those are the two longer runways, so in theory, that will be affecting the international flights, the bigger

we want to put out a picture that was tweet bid a passenger named ben levy that was on the plane during the crash and tweeted out this picture saying he was waiting for his ct scan and diagnosis at sf general and thoughts and prayers are with fellow passengers and family. obviously this picture was taken, remarkable, taken moments after this happened. we were thinking what they were thinking and what they had gone through and looking at the plane with all of that smoke and wondering if everyone got out safely. i can't began to imagine. >> the shock and adrenaline after being on a flight for ten or 11 or twelve hours coming from shanghai and stopping from seoul and then moments off of the flight, everyone was off so quickly and to have the frame of mind and snap a picture and get something like this, it is remarkable. the pictures we are seeing, katie utis have been outside the terminal talking to people about what happened and she has a lot of very emotional stories. katie you said, i heard you talking to a woman who had witnessed what happened and what did she have to tell you? >> repo

the passenger ben levy took this photo that you can see. just how much smoke there was and we've been hearing about there was a thud some people say they heard but everyone talking about the black smoke and that dust. passengers were waiting to get out at that point. >> this was a picture that the view from across the bay. actually. you can see how big that plume of smoke was. shortly after that flight 214 asiana airlines flight 214 went down at 11:30 this morning. >> retired airline captain sullen sullenberger -- >> here's what he had to say about today's crash. >> it's obvious that just what you said. that the aircraft seems to have struck that rock wall leading up to the paved surface where the bay ends and the airport surface begins and it landed short of the runway beginning. what's interesting to note is that you may know there's been airport construction going on now for some time at san francisco international. the reason for that is an faa mandated increase in the size of the runway safety area leading up to those runways. runway 2

ben levy who suffered minor injuries in the crash went with his wife. >> and going back to look at it now, you realized how much risk there was. >> absolutely. i mean you know, every second counted. and but on the other hand i think it was a blessing not to know for a lot of us. because that prevented panic. >> reporter: so little panic that one of the first passengers to call 911 seemed strangely calm. >> hi, we just are at the san francisco airport and our airplane just crashed upon landing. and i think we need some help as soon as pab. >> reporter: but the 911 calls released show concern growing as the injured waited for medical help. >> there are people injured on the tarmac, seriously injured. >> reporter: fire officials say to avoid chaos at the crash site ambulances were held at a staging area as rescue crew as sesed the injured. for those waiting for help, however, the minutes stretched on. >> there is a woman out here on the street, on the runway who is pretty much burned very severely on the head and we don't know what to do. she is nearly burned, she will probably die soon.

ben levy took these we have pictures of him in the cockpit as well. he's seated in the flight on the runway first responders kind of the scene, some what chaotic scene after the plane came down on saturday morning. these pictures coming to us here you see those first on fox. also we have the video of the scene as well. that coming from ntsb. you put these two things together while it was chaotic there was also order here and a lot has been made about how the first responders separate operated those that needed treatment right away from those who could wait to be treated. they were talking about the ongoing interview with the pilot and how it was an important part of their investigation. tau take a listen. >> we are going to get a lot more details about activities, about their work, about their training, who was the pilot flying it was the pilot in command in the cockpit at the time of the accident. we are going to be looking to couldn't reca couldn't recall late all of that information with what we are finding on the voice reporter and cockpit recorde

actually try and get that for you and play it back but it sounded like they had spoken to a guy named ben levyas one of the lucky survivors of this crash. so again we will try and re-rack that if we can and play that back for you because it would be the first interview with a survivor of this crash. captain, i interrupted you before we went to that. what were you saying? >> i was just saying that tom costello was saying the runway didn't have the margin of safety but it did. it had considerable overrun but the plane hit even short of the safety area which is really remarkable. the other thing is he mentioned also that the plane in its normal landing attitude is a bit nose high but when you have the plane flying quite slow the tail goes even farther down below where the gear is and that is what has to have happened in the case. that the plane was flying far too slow. >> why do you say that is what definitely happened there or -- >> that is what has to have happened. you see, when a plane lands the gear is going to touch the runway before the tail does. >> okay. >> if the plane is landing at a n

. >> passenger ben levy knew something was wrong when the asiana flight 214 was coming in for a landingthe ordinary flight turned quickly to chaos and then calm as the passengers tried to help one another escape the plane. >> it sounded like we're about to land. the nose of the plane, as you know, goes up a little bit. and then we full throttle started hitting hard, and then we felt like we were going up again. so, that's why i said i felt like we were -- it was almost missed landing and come back up and it didn't happen. we just crashed back. so, as i said, if we flipped, none of us would be here to talk about it. it's like a six flags show, right? you're tied up to your chair, and then, again, we're skipping on the runway and i felt like we were going back up. i thought maybe we would go back up and start flying again, trying to improvise another landing, but we went back down again. so, as i said it felt like slow motion. i was still tight to my chair until i unbuckled, but the whole row was completely crushed on the chairs behind. it was chaos. you know, first of all, there was a lo

thirty photos from are a man named ben levy who took a lot of these photos, and his wife took photoshim in the hospital afterwards. but what's interesting, i think, with these photos different from the video the ntsb gave us is, of course, the photos come from the actual accident, you're seeing first responders, some first responders carrying passengerrers on their back. it give uses -- gives you an idea in how this all played out and how first responders did such a great job and so did flight attendants, did such a great job getting people off that plane. unfortunately, as we know, we lost two, but it could have been so much worse, jenna. jenna: well put, adam. thank you. jon: for more on this, let's talk with peter goelz, former managing director of the national transportation safety board, a man who has a lot of experience investigating aviation accidents like this one. we now know that this plane was landing at an air speed of 106 knots, the flight crew themselves had apparently set a target air speed of 137 knots, sost coming in much slower and, therefore, sinking much faster th

. >> reporter: ben levy is among the dozens who walked away with minor injuries. >> bruised ribs and inside. >> reporter: he considers himself lucky. after a harrowing flight where doctors say it's a miracle so many survived. >> there is something changing in the way we fly, having said that, everybody who's seen this landing or heard about it can tell something went wrong and it does point to potentially the pilot. >> yeah, hey, steve ratner, you've landed there several times, you're a pilot, and you've gone in there. talk about what you're looking at, specifically the changes to the runway. several things going on. av yawnics on the ground were in place that will guide experienced and less experienced pilots in. also i guess they changed the approach to the runway. because they're fixing it up right now. what can you tell us? >> certainly those are factors. i'll get into those in a second. what we think we're quite confident of, i think very confident of at this point is pure pilot error. there's no evidence of mechanical failure. clearly the pilot made a mistake. the second thing

ben levy was on the flight. he took these photos on the plane and after he got off.shows the scene around the flight as people were responding. first responders were there and passengers were getting off the plane, some of them with help literally on the back of flight attendants. others were making their way out themselves. as we get more of these details, we're starting to hear more about first responders. amazing stories of survival. one of the stories we're hearing about is a police officer. imagine this. fire fighters go on that plane. the smoke's there, the fire's there. there are people still trapped. but a police officer went on there without any fire gear at all and helped rescue people. take a listen. >> i didn't think about it. i knew those people were trapped in there and they needed help. we saw the black plume of smoke coming in. it was like something out of a nightmare. i was just doing my job. >> he's a hero. >> he is a hero. a number of heroes from that flight really starting to emerge. not only passengers but flight attendants as well, first respond
