saint benedict closed in 1917 to -- 1972. everybody in the monastery was white, that is not the case now. students inber of the school increase the standards were dropping. it created a huge problem in our monastery. we wound up closing it. 14 people from the monastery left and they went to martin county. we were left trying to decide what to do and we decided that we would try to do a educational venture. it was never our intention to reopen the school. we created this venture that was a new logo and we were trying to play off of saint benedict. it was not going to be the old school. one man said i want to ask you how come it was written as saint benedict prep, now it is no longer that? there was no reasonable answer. the next morning it was reopened. not by me or by anybody but by carl. the african-american community after the rebellion reopened saint benedict prep. they say yougroups have to shut up and listen. up and find out accompany people through life. that is what we are trained to do with teenagers. lose their life

british troops came ashore benedict, maryland, on august 19, 1814, and began marching to bladensburg. with monroe's suggestion of system of couriers to report the enemy's movements was disregarded by secretary of war john armstrong, monroe went into the field himself. used this telescope to count the numbers of ships and men and the british force and reported back to president madison. at the battle of bladensburg on august 24th, the british quickly rabid american force of regulars and poorly organized militia, monroe moved some american units on the field in a matter that did little to improve an already chaotic command structure. while the cartoon at the above right there implies that madison fled from the british in panic, in fact, he and most of the cabinet including monroe stayed on the field until the end and narrowly avoided capture. the british moved onto washington, d.c. where they burned many public buildings including the white house. in the aftermath of this disaster, armstrong resigned as secretary of war and monroe w assumed the office while remaining secretary of state.
