tara moriarty joins us now from benicia. >> reporter: this sign says what has weighed upon many park goer minds for some time. park closed due to budget cuts. now a short-term plan has saverred this park from closing on monday. we don't know how long. 70 of california's 278 state parks have been slated to close july 1st in an effort to save $22 million. as of yesterday they signed 40 agreement with partners including nonprofit and local goths to keep the parks open. another 25 are still being investigated. the vallejo times is reporting city negotiations will continue over a short-term plan to maintain trash and other services. volunteers are collecting gate fees. because the park receives federal funding it has to remain accessible for pees. governor brown says it takes from other important purposes or many violate the states agreement. now if you would like to know the other areas that are in jeopardy of closing, benicia as we mentioned has makeshift plans to stay open for now. these others will shut down sunday. they are mineral and mining museum in yosemite area. gray whale cove.

the two state parks in benicia are once again on the budget chopping block and the closer deadline is july 1st. the state has agreed to lead venetia take over operation of the historic capital building but there is no plan to let the city operates the outdoor recreation area. >> we're still not certain what the state will do with regards to closing the gates. it is fair to assume that restaurant cleaning and trash pickup will probably cease july 1st. >> the state has all that their offer to take over the open space because of the request for $77,000 to fund it. even though that is only a third of what the state is currently paying. it is an indication of how serious the budget cutting has become. and it is why they have been so successful at napa state park. hear a local parks district and a nonprofit association have taken over complete operation of the park and nearby gristmill. under the state's control the historic buildings fell into disrepair but the new local operators are repairing structures and building new tent cabins generating rental income to keep the place open. >> i be
