is it fair to ask them for money and do we need more marc benioffs here in the bay area? >> well, i think it's certainly fair and mr. benioff has been not only incredibly generous, he's been incredibly smart about where he's been investing his philanthropic dollars, but i think it's more important we look at what's happening at the federal level rather than look to individuals or, you know, to rely on the generosity of individuals. hud, the department of housing and urban development, lost about 80% of its budget authority since 1978 and that actually corresponds with the rise of this modern day homelessss. if you go back and look at the great depression when there was over 2 million people who were experiencing homelessness in the united states and eventually that number was down to below 200,000, that was due to federal investments in affordable housing. if you just took a fraction of the department of defense budget and invested that in housing and gave everybody who is living below -- at or below rty a section 8 or now it's called a housing choice voucher where they c

mark benioff last week said stop calling yourself a platform, you're a publisher. the publisher of today and the future. >> right. i think there are a lot of people who certainly want to see mark zuckerberg go forward. and i think you're likely to see that when mark comes to testify in front of capitol hill just in a few days. there are a lot of democratic lawmakers who sit on the house financial services committee who have said openly that they think that zuckerberg and facebook should be doing more here. but when i sat down with him, he told me the same thing on political ads. he doesn't think facebook should be the arbiter of truth. he's worried about an erosion of truth is what he told me, but he doesn't think that the tech company or any tech company should really have that role of judging what politicians say is correct or not sxwlp th. >> then how co-have such a strong position on freedom of speech when he spent the last decade desperately trying to do business with china? >> well, i think mark would say that there are some things that facebook didn't agree

governance factors chris, good to see you zp >> good to see you >> what did you think about what benioff said >> i agree with his comments i think it really is about -- it still is about making money, but it's about making money over the long-term, not the short-term. i agree with milton friedman's original statement, he never mentioned time frame and wall street is thinking that's just 91 days. to me, it's about 30 years, and that's what salesforce is about. it's about making money over a long time period, which means you have to consider these other factors about e, s, and g. >> i mean, are you telling me that going forward, you're going to be looking at social impact scores, for example, as much as you're looking at analyst ratings and other things when deciding whether to invest in a company? >> scott, i'm telling you, we do that right now when we look at a company, we look at their financial statements, but we also look at, how do they operate? how do they treat their employees? what's material to the company because not all of these issues are material to certain companies. to some

this can be a profitable strategy when you get it right when marc benioff from salesforce.com came on the show during the depth of the great recession and told us his cloud-based software company would be just fine, you had to grit your teeth and buy it you had to get in it when he said things were fine. it was bankable. when the former ceo of domino's pizza told us how he would turn things around in 2010, the stock was trading at 18 bucks. these guys deserve the benefit of the doubt if you didn't trust them, you missed out on some monster moves. look, i don't want to be too proud here, but i said, hey, listen, i believe this guy that's what helps. it helps to have me say it, because i've thought about this a lot. i've talked to ceos, pretty much everyone in the world. if management tells you something is wrong, you should take them extra special seriously. especially when a company preannounces a shortfall, you need to wait 30 days at least before buying that stock in practice, i found other than some rare exceptions, when business is so ugly a company is forced to come out early and
