just up the river from cedar rapids is the benton county community of vinton. like many other towns, they say they learned a lot from the 2008 flood. the town says it has been watching what is happening upstream, hoping that the predictions are wrong. the river in cedar falls crested earlier today, and now the city is switching to recovery mode. that story is coming up number is a little hard to comprehend because of the way they measure the river there. but that was below yesterday's projection. and that was about three and a half feet below the record high crest in cedar falls. but many peope dealing with extensive flood damage. we went on a boat tour of this neighborhood today, and you can see how the floodwaters reached these homes. in some spots it was seven feet deep. people were able to sandbag, but we don't know the extent of the damage yet in this area. but we do know that flood protection efforts in cedar falls did save the city's downtown area. cedar falls utilities had to shutoff power to get people out of the flooded areas.
