i talked to a number of voters who say even in beto can't beat ted cruz, people are excited about him and that seems to be drawing dmgs to the polls. so far here this morning. that's something democrats would like to see continue. it's going to take a lot of work to win a straightwide race in texas. maybe this is the year, maybe it's not. texas democrats are fired up this morning, stephanie. >> you know texas politics well. what races should we be keeping an eye on specifically? >> well, o'rourke from el paso has done something that's really surprised a lot of people. he's created a grassroots campaign that's created a lot of attention. he's outraised ted cruz by not using pac money or corporate money as donations. he has hit 220-plus of the state's 254 counties. and he is sort of an indication that maybe things are turning for democrats in this state. it's hard to tell obviously at this point because we've been such a solid red state for so long. but i think what you'll get out of texas, stephanie, is an indication of whether mr. trump's profile and his policies are having an effect

the biggest test case may be in the senate where ted cruz will likely face democratic congressman beto o'rourke. what are you looking at to see if it will we competitive? turnout and demographics. on the turnout front democrats have reason to be excited. through ten days of early voting in the 15 largest counties in texas, republicans have seen a 16% increase in turnout since the 2014 midterm primaries, democrats have seen a whopping 102% increase in turnout in that same time period. that's more than four times the gains republicans saw in the last midterm primary cycle, which turned into a republican year. but the big question in texas always is who votes. in 2016, white voters made up 43% of the texas population, but 57% of the texas electorate. that's a big gap. while hispanics made up 39% of the population but only 25% of the electorate. if the percentage of white voters starts to drop closer to the 50% mark or even below, that will be seen as a good sign to the democrats. but even if democrats don't swing the texas senate seat, they could still do well in other races. four house d

beto o'rourke may have their best chance of winning the senate race. last night were not good for texas democrats. they had a high turnover. they turned out in pretty record numbers. but republicans also turned out in pretty solid numbers. they improved on their turn around from the last midterm election in 2015. ted cruz is worried he may not have the whole base behind him because he didn't endorse donald trump initially. he got 85% of the republican vote. it shows he's in pretty healthy shape. >> dana: a week ago we had dan crenshaw running against eight other republicans and texas. if you don't get 50% you're forced into a runoff with the top vote getter and the one just behind. crenshaw makes it into the runoff. what does that tell you? >> unbelievable sorry. he's a navy seal who served the country and has a compelling story that he was able to overcome millions of dollars by the candidate that the governor republican governor greg abbott supported and a candidate who just was sort of an empty suit, if you will. she spends a lot of money but couldn

ted cruz, republican incumbent senator will be challenged by beto o'rourke. to put in perspective the scale of the challenge the democrats face, this is no ordinary task in terms of flipping a state. the last time texas went blue in a presidential race, you've got to go back to 1976. most of the pictures were black and white back then. jimmy carter, one-term president, democrat from the south, that's the last time democrats won a presidential race in texas. last time they won a senate race, remember this pair, dukakis, benson. they lost that election, but on the same day lloyd benson was re-elected to the senate from texas. the last democratic victory there, 30 years ago. the last time any democrat won any statewide race in texas, 1994, a full generation ago. that's what they're up against. why do they think it could be different this year? there are a couple different factors. number one is one we've been talking about for a long time. texas demographically is changing and becoming more diverse. the latino population is rising. the black population is rising
