betsy train has seen it firsthand. her husband nearly drowned last year in a canoeing accident. >> they actually capsized at seneca. they were in the water for about 2 1/2, 3 hours. they had life jackets. and they scrambled for what they could. >> reporter: in 2009, ten people drowned between the key bridge and the waters just north of great falls. an area known as the potomac river gorge. to prevent accidents, emergency responders want to urge visitors to be careful, especially on wet rocks which can become extremely slippery. >> algae growing on the rocks and make it very, very slippery. these rocks have been here for thousands and thousands of years eroded by the potomac river. the area is smooth. when they get wet, smooth surface can be slippery. there's sand. sand gets on it they act like ball bearings or tiny balls and make you slip as well. >> reporter: swim sing not allowed in the potomac river gorge. remember, while seemingly still on the surface, down below the current is very strong and can sweep you under i
