jon: betsy, you talked about the uaw fighting for all it could get. you wrote last month about the fact that we have seen so many strike actions in part because both sides aren't exactly sure what ultimately the right match should be, and that has played into the idea of uncertainty has played a role in some of the strike we have seen. what has been your general observation on the fact that we have just seen so much of strike action, period? betsy: when the unemployment rate came below 4%, a lot of economists were like, whoa, that's it, that is as low as unemployment can go, and all we will see is massive wage gains because workers have all the bargaining power. that is one of the reasons everybody was so worried we couldn't get inflation down, because the tight labor market, workers with all the bargaining power, the fear is it would spark inflation. that is not actually what we saw. that means two things -- it means, first of all, that we shouldn't over interpret low unemployment as saying that the labor market can't expand any further. but that als

betsy: definitely the debt level is unsustainable.t some point that will be affecting longer-term rates even more than what the fed is doing. that is an entirely separate issue. with respect to the fed's policy rate and short-term rates, what i think is going to happen is if you see inflation stagnate, stay at current levels, the committee will conclude they have to raise rates a bit. if you see inflation continued to drift down a bit, they will feel more comfortable. if inflation starts to really drop, they may follow that with drops in the nominal rate or the policy rate. i think that is the key piece to keep an eye on right now. matt: i would be remiss if i did not ask about the banking landscape. in your position previously at wells fargo, what you think about this time right now for the big banks or the regional banks in terms of net income and beefing up their balance sheets? betsy: on a steady state basis, a 5% fed funds rate gives banks a lot more room to maneuver on the net interest margin. more room for differences in differ

when president trump came into office and betsy was the education secretary i think that administrationef was still polarizing that it had a ripple effects in tracing and wheezing a democratic backlash against charter schools. that i think is still playing out a little bit but now we have a question whether there's going to be religious charter schools, which is kind of a wild card still playing out even in the last few months. i think the overall thing that has happened is that there's been this massive expansion of school choice legislation and one of the key things about that has been this push for universal school choice vouchers which meanss they are no longer limitd to low income children but the idea that every family is entitled to take some amount of tax dollars and use it to pay for the education that suits them. generally speaking that means homeschooling and private education and if you want to use it for tutoring, online learning and so i think that piece of it that has gone universal is one of the big things we've seen and for me the argument i was making in the book is sort
