this is mike bettes. not mike bennett but mike bettes's car. >> from the weather channel, yes. >> from the weather channel, yes. this is, what does it say, tornado hunt 2013. mike bet sis okay. mike bettes is okay. this is out where lance west is located right now. of course you saw all of the video and you know, we're showing you that monster tornado out there. this is that whole area out by i-40 in the el reno road area. the problem is that it made a violent turn. and it caught all these folks that do this stuff, it caught them off guard and frankly, ran over them. and this is mike bettes's -- not mike bennett, but mike bettes's truck is smashed. this is where the double fatality occurred. >> you said, mike, it looked like it -- >> coverage from kfor. affiliate of nbc doing excellent coverage of this. repeating the news they just broke there. this is according to kfor in oklahoma city. a double fatality on interstate 40. interstate 40 has been shut down. reporters are describing a scene that looks like

while mike bettes of the weather channel and his crew had a very close call, others weren't so lucky. three veteran chasers died. and now the questions have started over this dangerous and crowded business. our report tonight from nbc's tom costello. >> hold on, brother. >> reporter: from inside their truck this is what a weather channel crew faced as a tornado caught up with them. >> everybody just go, go. keep going. keep going if you can. everybody duck down. >> guys, that's it. >> reporter: just minutes earlier meteorologist mike bettes cut short his live report. >> we have to go now in order to stay ahead of this and not get run over by it. >> reporter: the tornado did run over them, tossing them 200 yards. the ejected camera caught their truck rolling over and over again. all survived. nearby, storm chaser meteorologist tim samaras had also been on the air with msnbc. >> boy, the ingredients are coming together for a volatile day. >> reporter: just hours later, samaras, his son paul and meteorologist carl young were killed when a tornado made a sudden turn, demolishing their car

here is how bettes described the ordeal to al roker this morning. >> initially i couldn't believe it was happening. it was survival mode after that. okay, what do we have to do inside this vehicle to make sure we'll be okay? we all ducked down, had our seat belts on. the air bags all deployed. my head hit the air bag and we were just holding on. everything happened so fast. we were trying to get past the tornado, get out of the path of it and got caught on the front end of it. >> you survived this. are you going to go back out there on the chase? >> i don't know. you know, it's given me perspective, what's important in my life. it may not be up to me, al. you know, i'll talk to my family about it. if they don't want me to go, i won't go. simple as that. >> also inside this pummeled suv, his photographer, austin anderson. he also walked away but with

and joining me now is one of the survivors, weather channel anchor and meteorologist mike bettes.f all, how are you feeling? how banged up did you and your crew get? >> feeling a little sore this morning. a few cuts, a few scratches, but otherwise okay. almost everyone walked away without a scratch on them. we have one of our crew members who had some broken bones, he's still in the hospital. but he's in pretty good spirits. >> tell me what it was like going from the hunter of the tornado to the hunted. >> scary. i mean, i've seen a lot of these in my career, but never been that close. and i was trying to get away from the storm at that point, but getting picked up, you know, tumbling, being airborne, it was violent, it was rough. i truly -- scariest moment in my life. >> you know, you do this for a living. this isn't the first one you've chased. so what do you think went wrong here? >> i think this was just an erratic tornado. i think the size of it and speed of it changed very, very quickly. i think the direction of movement changed quickly. and i think there were a lot of peopl
