i'm betty nguyen. this morning hurricane earl is gaining strength as it moves toward the eastern caribbean. now a category 2 storm, earl could threaten the east coast right here a little later this week with sustained winds of 10 0 miles per hour. earl is moving west-northwest. and there is another system not far behind. a hurricane warning is in effect for puerto rico and the u.s. virgin islands. earl is expected to become a dangerous category 3 storm later today. >> we'll have to watch for the possibility of perhaps landfall somewhere in the eastern part of the united states. although at this time, the national hurricane center is saying that probably it will make a turn to the east. but by then, it doesn't mean we're out of the woods because right behind that we have potentially another tropical system, fiona. and that could take a southern track than earl. >> cruise ships are being diverted to avoid earl and airlines have already started to cancel flights. >>> meanwhile, residents along the gulf co

i'm betty nguyen. we start with this, because if all goes well in the gulf today, and that is a big if, bp could begin the next to last step in permanently plugging its deep sea oil well. it's called a static kill and involves pumping heavy drilling mud and cement into the well. even if it works, the clean-up will condition and that could be complicated by the use of dispersants to break up the oil. >> reporter: bp's point man on the clean jam came to venice, louisiana, for a choreographed pr event to tour the gulf. >> thank, guys. >> reporter: but doug suttles was hounded by questions about the company's use of dispersants. what impact do you think the dispersants has had? >> hang on here. >> reporter: not just the dispersants but the frequency of their use. they said the coast guard routinely approved bp's requests to dump thousands of gallons a day to break up the oil, despite a federal order to use them sparingly. >> some of those requests were accepted as they were asked and sometimes they modifie

"the early show." i'm betty nguyen.you' i'm fred lemond, and i'm in charge of bp's efforts to remove oil from these waters. bp has taken full responsibility for the cleanup and that includes keeping you informed. every morning, over 50 spotter planes and helicopters take off and search for the oil. we use satellite images, infrared and thermal photography to map and target the oil. then, the boats go to work. almost 6,000 vessels. these are thousands of local shrimp and fishing boats organized into task forces and strike teams. plus, specialized skimmers from around the world. we've skimmed over 27 million gallons of oil/water mixture and removed millions more with other methods. we've set out more than 8 million feet of boom to protect the shoreline. i grew up on the gulf coast and i love these waters. we can't keep all the oil from coming ashore, but i'm gonna do everything i can to stop it, and we'll be here as long as it takes to clean up the gulf. travel advisories to small business loans. retirement savings to med

i'm betty nguyen. this morning we are learning more about the plane crash that killed former alaskan senator ted stevens. the single engine plane plowed into the side of a mountain on monday afternoon. there were clouds, gusty winds and rain at the time. stevens and four others were killed. four other passengers did survive. federal investigators are on the scene. tara mergener is in washington with the latest. good morning, tara. >> reporter: hi, betty. this plane crashed with such force, it left a 300-foot gash on the slope. the ntsb meets together today to try to piece together clues. investigators this morning are combing the remote mountainside where former alaska senator ted stevens lost his life. >> we're looking to see whether or not there were any pilot reports, distress signals. >> reporter: he and four others were killed when their plane went down 325 miles southwest of anchorage. the group of nine was headed out on a fishing trip. four others survived the crash, including former nasa chief

i'm betty nguyen. bp still hopes to begin pumping mud and cement into its blownout oil well, but a test to determine the safety of the so-called static kill operation has been delayed. meanwhile, the government has revised its estimate of just how much oil has leaked into the gulf. tara mergener is in washington with all the details. good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning. well, the new numbers make it even clearer just how bad this oil spill really is. but bp is hoping this is the home stretch. the disaster in the gulf is officially the worst accidental oil spill in history. according to new federal estimates, nearly 5 million barrels, or about 206 million gallons of crude, gushed from the ruptured well before it was capped 19 days ago. >> i think everybody would like to have this ended as soon as possible. >> reporter: today bp plans to test a procedure it hopes will permanently seal the well. tests of the static kill were postponed monday after crews discovered a small hydraulic leak. if all

i did attend a convention with bettie yi. she is our representative to the state board of equalization. she made it very clear that she did not favor a patchwork of regulations regarding the alcohol industry because it is so difficult to work. she did make it clear that her office is not interested -- her office is interested in keeping small businesses operating, and her office will work with businesses that are having trouble meeting their tax payments. she was very clear in response to members of the public. the state board equalization now requires substantial deposits from businesses, businesses, who do not have track records or businesses that are changing their corporate structure. that was brought up at this meeting. her office is responsive to the synthesis go small business community. please contact and the board to work note payments and to work out schedules. she is focused on we are still in economic crisis, and she emphasized that she did not want to see businesses closing. she also discussed marijuana and the c
