steve kornacki is at the big board. tim miller is back with us. okay.k down the results of last night's wins. >> yeah. really it was not a competition at all here. this was the second leg of nevada's very confusing republican nominating process this year. but this was the caucus run by the state republican party in nevada. and the delegates for the convention come through the caucus, so donald trump will get all of the delegates. this is a texas pastor who has been running, not getting much attention. the reason for it was the state of nevada began a presidential primary that it would run for both parties this year. the state republican party said we don't want that primary deciding our delegates. we want to decide it ourselves in the caucus. they said candidates can either run in the primary or the caucus, but can't run in both. earlier this week, they didn't have the primary anyway. nikki haley opted to run in that. what happened was the option none of those candidates won by a better than 2 to 1 margin. in this sense, this was a win for trump. he den

but he's at that board tonight . >> big numbers tonight, bret. yeah. y, sean, i'm just borrowing the board, just the ninth michigan primary. it's interesting, as you mentioned the former president winning. we'll take a look at the republican side. you know, there's 16 delegates tonight. there's 39 delegates at a state convention over the weekend. >> they had to split it up overe rules. two but as we dig in here to the numbers and there you see 12e about 12% in and 65 to 30. now, a lot of these counties have not filled in, but if you look down here in detroit, you know, they haven't even filed yet. but next door, this is a washtenad w. this is where university of michigan is, ann arbor. if nikki haley was going to have a big night, she had to have won right there. and you see the former president, that's 55% in if you look over here at grand rapids. again, not a lot 55 numbers yet.number >> this state has beens. reallyr interesting for republicans. if you think back to the last elections, 2016, this turnedrnet into trump country. all of thiums upper mich

let's start with steve kornacki, at the big board., we've got polls close to most of the state, what are you seeing, what are you looking for? and >> we are looking for a first result. as you mention, if it is only in four counties -- here dickinson, manen -- if you live there. first of all, you are lucky, because it's beautiful up there. i was just saying. but second of all, you do have another hour to vote. everywhere else in the u.p., and in the lower peninsula, the polls are now close. and keep in mind, michigan is a heavy early voting, really mail voting, vote by mail state. about half 1 million early or mail ballots were cast in both the democratic and republican primaries, and under a new state law passed a couple of years ago, the counties could begin tabulating those absentee votes today. so one thing we are looking for, there are some mixed signals i think coming from the state here, about exactly how this is going to work. but certainly given that rule, and that law, it is possible that we can get big, big chunks of the vot

we are calling it the bret baier big board. he is at that board. numbers tonight, bret. >> only 16 delegates tonight, 39 over the weekend. as we dig in here, two of the numbers, you see 12en percent in and 65-30. a lot of these counties have not filled in. look down here in detroit, they haven't filed yet. next door, washtenaw. you see the former president, 55% in. grand rapids not a lot of numbers. this state interesting for republicans if you think back to the last elections, 2016, this turned into trump country, all of this upper michigan part. that makes it interesting for the general election. he is going to win big. polls had him up significantly. really how union voters vote in the general election. head to head again. how arab american voters. push back against the policy of the biden administration arab americans read by congresswoman, tlaib. again i pushed to oakland county. it is at 14. if you go to again, ann arbor -- 28, some of the democratic experts uncommitted vote could get up to about 100,000 votes. depends on how many democrats vo

steve kornacki, as always, his post at the big board. what's the big numbers here? >> you can see, if you've been following the last hour here, the story has been the difference between the polls being open and close in michigan. it is -- i.r.a., dickinson -- together, a combined 0.5 of the -- combined 0.5 of the -- border counties are closed, we can make that projection. but it's been evident, as well, if you've been watching, for the last hour what's been happening here. and one of the things as, more vote has been coming in, it was initially very concentrated right here in southeastern michigan. but more votes from the rural areas, up north, are starting to come. in some of the upper peninsula started to come in, and that haley numbers continuing to take down and down everest as lightly. now, she just over 31 30%, at 31%. and -- donald trump -- over nikki haley. we mentioned, a few minutes ago, if you are watching, southeastern michigan, the two counties where we think haley's got to do the best tonight, and if she wanted to have a strong showing statewide, reall

let's check back with steve kornacki at the big board.s at the top of the hour, you are talking about all the voters who left democrats in the last election and came on back. i want to know, was it suozzi ús unifying message? but, more, who are these voters? explain the demographics in the state. >> a couple things we can talk about, stephanie, there are some limitations are now, because the data that we have gotten so far does not really answer the needy, gritty questions about what exactly this quarter of the district turnout was higher or lower. hopefully, we could determine some of that in the coming days. a couple things we can point out. first of all, we talked about this district divided between two counties here, the bulk of it in nassau county. this is on long island, a gigantic suburb, sort of a quintessential new york city commuting suburb. the rest of the district is actually in your city. new york city. it's in the eastern part of the borough of queens, the far edges of queens right here. it is kind of suburban and character,

the man of the hour, msnbc national political correspondent, steve kornacki, for us, live at the big boardood morning, and for those of you in south carolina who are out there voting, happy primary day! so, here it is. donald trump, nikki haley, it's basically been eight months now since the new hampshire primary that donald trump won by 11 points now. the action shifts to haley's home state here, south carolina. the polling certainly has shown donald trump with a commanding, in many cases, overwhelming lead heading into today. obviously, if haley is going to turn this race around, she's gonna pull a big surprise tonight. so, some of the places we're going to be looking at the vote comes in tonight, first for haley, her strength has been, we've talked about this, it's been with independents. it's been with democrats. this is an open primary. there's no primary registration in south carolina, so anybody can vote, as long as they didn't vote in the democratic presidential primary, which was held three weeks ago. not a big turnout in that one. so, there's a pretty large universe, at least in

it's the kornacki at the big board, thank you. let's bring into the conversation, jonathan capehart, my friend and host of msnbc's capehart. it's good to see you. so, i want to get your thoughts. what should we be looking out for tonight? what are you going to be looking out for as the result start to trickle in? >> so, i am going to be focused on turnout. i am glad that steve gave us that primer that in 96 and 2000, would be the more analogous years analogous to this year. there were no primaries. out also point out that in 2000, there were no primaries because vice president al gore was the basically incumbent, but he was running for president. here is what i am looking at in turnout. in new hampshire, president biden was not even on the ball and, yeah, he won the right in. that was a big help from new hampshire, where new hampshire basically said, yeah, you opted to kick us out, as the first primary, and he did not even campaign in the state. but, wilson's a message to the country that we are behind you. in south carolina, the

let's go straight to steve kornacki at the big board for the latest numbers. >> yeah, lawrence, let's talk about the republican primary, because about a fifth of the vote, one in five votes are tabulated, you can see all the counties lining up in trump's color. on the republican side it looks like trump wins, but look at what haley has been getting so far in new hampshire. she got 43% of the vote in south carolina just saturday, and she got 40% of the vote, she made the idea of 40% kind of consistently, a centerpiece of her of speech saturday. here we are in michigan. same rules south carolina had, no party registration in michigan, nobody registers as a democrat, as a republican, as independent, anybody who wants can vote in this republican primary here. and yet some of the strengths that haley had in south carolina, some of the area where she was strongest, there was able to bring up to 40% statewide, and in fact when a congressional district in south carolina, the areas in michigan that are most demographically similar to those areas, she's not performing nearly as well in michigan

he is at the big board. steve, what can you tell us?l you there are polls in south carolina that are still open, as you can see the bottom of your screen there, for just under two more hours. so what we are getting, hear what i'm about to show you, is the first wave of exit poll data. remember how this, works all throughout the day, we got folks down there on the ground in south carolina, talking to voters, as they come out of the polls, accumulating a larger and larger sample size. so they are still out there doing it, people are still out there voting. we are going to have a second and a third wave of the status, oh this is preliminary data that we have collected so far. and i'm going to tell you a little bit about the nature of the al -- that we are learning about from this exit poll data. and i think one of the big questions every once had coming into the south carolina primary is, look, nikki haley, we know in new hampshire she did exceptionally well with independents, exceptionally well with democrats. donald trump of course was r

let's go to the big board and bring in national political correspondent steve kornacki. steve, polls close more than an hour ago, what do the numbers say, how are you reading them? >> they speak for themselves, i guess, but one notable thing here in the last hour is we have a quarter of the voting in south carolina, initially what we were getting's big batches of early vote in counties. you're wondering would there be any variants, with that bring the biden number down? it really isn't, biden's running 96% statewide, 25% williams, and phillips hasn't touched 2%, i can individualized this county by county. 37%, turnout number, biden versus sanders, backed primary the total number of people who turned out in 2020, high interest here they get about 37% of the total, they are on pace for that. heavily black county, the other county we get the vote, two tours of it has the highest concentration of -- but again two thirds of the vote is in, they are also on pace to be at 46% of the turnout level, 37% when you do statewide also if you look statewide you extrapolate, what the tu

msnbc national political correspondent steve kornacki joins us at the big board to break down the resultst much to say when it is 99.2 to 0.8. nevada had this confusing situation where the state republican party held the caucuses, which did have the convention delegates and trump, you see here, won that, then a state run presidential primary and they said if you're a candidate, you can be in the primary or caucuses, but not both. nikki haley lost the primary to none of the candidates. a ballot option out there in nevada. there is a proxy for trump, a 2 to 1margin there. that's the question on nikki haley to overcome the kind of obstacles she's faced so far? next test for haley will be her home state. south carolina. here is a poll from this week, in that state, trump leading 68-31, over haley, in south carolina. the problem haley has faced consistently, in primaries, in caucuses, and in polling, is that when you get outside -- she does well with independents. well with democrats. where they can vote. but among actual core republican voters, she's getting clobbered by donald trump. that's

steve kornacki here at the big board, and joseph bustos.ectations for tomorrow, what are we looking at? >> by all the polling, donald trump obviously the huge favorite tomorrow. it would be a monumental upset if nikki haley won: but let's take a look at the basic demographic question here for her, sort of the political demographics. that is to say take a look back to the last contest. nikki haley lost it to donald trump by 11 points, but it really tells the story of what we see in every poll in every state on the republican side. it's this. in new hampshire, remember, independents could vote. you know, democrats, self-identified democrats could vote as well. half the electorate, half the electorate, only one out of every two votes was actually a self-identified republican in new hampshire. and look at that, donald trump won by almost 50 points with them. the reason haley only lost by 11 is look at this massive number of independents who voted in new hampshire, and she won them by 19 points. there's even a group of self-identified democrats

steve kornacki once again at the big board. steve, what do you have?ou. first of all, we are waiting for the first full from nasa. we do have to vote from nasa. you see a ton of red here. i want to show you what that is. though it's almost nothing. this looks like a precinct or two. put this in some perspective, we are expecting tonight about 155,000 votes from the nassau county portion of the district. this is 1000. we are trying to track down exactly where it's from, and i think one thing to keep in mind in nassau is that it could be potentially just a slow process in terms of getting substantial votes out there. here is where we stand right now, because the lion's share of the vote is now in queens here. you can see that is a margin still of 20 points for tom suozzi, more than 80% in. the question that we asked tonight, there are two recent elections to reference this this year. one was the 2022 midterms, where the democrats loss at the district, and they only won this queens portion of the district, by four points, and then there is the 2020 presid

steve kornacki still with us at the big board. steve, is joe biden's percentage , winning percentage, still holding? >> yes it is. we can go over to the democratic side, here he is actually hit 80%. you can see about a third is in on the democratic side. it has been relatively slow tonight in terms of the votes, it has been a steady trickle i would say. but the pattern is pretty much settled in where in most counties here, uncommitted is hovering somewhere around 10%. there are a couple exceptions, we have talked all about -- ann arbor, just over 20% right there, about half the vote in. the big unfinished piece of the puzzle here in michigan, the biggest by far is in wayne county. almost a quarter of the democratic vote comes out of wayne county. detroit is the heavy hitter. but so here is dearborn michigan. we have talked with the airborne, the majority of arab american population. not just dearborn, other parts around dearborn in wayne county as well, with american muslim populations. so when we finally get a forward picture fro

with that, let's get right to, it our own steve kornacki is at the big board. steve, walk us through it. >> yes, stephanie, let's start on the republican side, now we have just gotten the last couple minutes a lot more of the vote. we are up to 40% statewide. it has been coming in at a trickle, a steady trickle. we have worked our way to 40% of the vote. trump right now 67%, haley at about 28%. a couple ways to look at this result. obviously this is a landslide for trump, but i think from healy standpoint, she has indicated clearly that she knows she is likely not getting this republican nomination, but she -- delivered on saturday night sort of a centerpiece of her message, the idea that hey, there's 40% of republicans, that is what it was in new hampshire, that it was in south carolina where she got 40% of the vote. about 40% she was saying out there, we don't want to vote for donald trump, there wouldn't for me. she wants to keep going because of that. well that number, she's going to get in michigan tonight, is not 40%. it doesn't look like it will even be

let's bring in msnbc steve kornacki at the big board. steve, for people just tuning in. set this up for us. >> yes, so basically also all the vote. we have a little more trickling in. this is basically what you're seeing right here. 97% of the votes counted in new york's third district. cease-fire wedding this thing and thomas beating fellow up. the margin here is basically 7.8%, a 8 point margin call for suozzi tonight. and i think the differences that is the big picture significance, in this district that covers a lot. this is 80% nassau county long island classic new york city suburbs. and the eastern edge of queens right here, the smaller portion actually, technically in new york city although fairly suburban nation as well. about 20%, a little less than 20% of the vote coming out there so that's a district that we are talking about here. we see a democratic margin with eight points tonight, what is interesting is here is the journey that this district has been on. and the 2020 presidential election this district voted for joe biden by eight points. so the democrats
