the bike to work numbers. we had a record number of bikes at van ness, nearly 1100 bikes just between 8:00 and 9:00 a.m., and during that period of time, even more exciting is of the eastbound traffic, 73% were people on bikes, said that intersection during that period of time, we had that much room share with bicycles. the number of people arriving on the bike to work day increase in the last five years. 54% more bikes at that intersection then at our peak hour counter the previous month, so it was not just the kind of heavy ridership. and as you know, one of the ideas on bike to work day is to get more people converted to the idea of the pleasures of writings -- writing one's bike to work. -- riding one's bike to work. some of the 54% will make the jump, at least once or twice a week. moving on, we have been reporting on the progress on the church project, and we have been kind of gearing up for the shutdown that is part of that project. they will start on memorial day weekend. at that intersection. we will

right by the cal train station in san francisco where they have a free bike doctor for those bikes that have not seen the light of day for a few months. they have one of several energizer stations where they are signing people up and passing out refreshments. a lot of people are not used to getting those. we just got to count from the city, they do this at market and van ness between 8-9:00 a.m., they counted 1031 bicycles going through that intersection. that is 17 bikes permit and that accounts for about 73 percent of all vehicle trips through that intersection. we ran into one woman this afternoon and she had quite and debenture >> i started off for a livid and bike downhill as normal and and i turned off of market and then my tire exploded and it was really loud. a poor lady was on her cell phone and got really freaked out. the tire just exploded but it didn't fall off or anything. then i had to wait for the bus to come. there was one behind me that did not stop so i had to wait for the next one. i brought it down here in the fixed my tire and now i'm all set for tomorrow >> a flat

last week, i was involved with bike to work day. 10 of us met on naples and geneva street. we talked about reaching our goals on 20% transit by the year 2020. i looked at all the cars that were swirling around us and just talk suggested the streets were around there, and i was like, i do not know if we can reach that goal. we're not putting any investments in any part of san francisco that is going to need greater investment in transit, if we even want to meet our transit goals as well. while i am is supportive of these projects and i see the need to be able to make sure that we are incentivizing bicycle riding and putting together the bike share program and leaking cyclist to greater transit and transportation hubs in the area, we're not doing the work we need to do in order to build our network city-wide, and we're doing it at the easiest spots to do it in. when we actually do our -- next year when we call for applicants, can we try and make sure that we actually can really put forward a sense of equity. and we're going to make sure that we get some applicants that come f
