folks who have bikes right now have bikes. bike sharing is marvelous because it gives an option to folks who do not have a bicycle but want to make a quick trip. it is a great taxi substitute, a great muni substitute. no date on muni. let's say i am here, i have a lunch date in palo alto. i can make a 10-minute trip to the station, ride the muni, and then make it to my lunch. i would not think of myself as a cyclist, but i would have made a trip. if you have been to paris, barcelona, minneapolis, you may have tried one of the systems. they are wonderful and growing. it really makes short trips convenient and sustainable. density is the key. to the extent that we have a pilot, we want it to be a fair test. there is no point in throwing out 10 stations a mile apart and saying, nobody used it. you need to have those stations close together. in paris and london, the rule of thumb is you need to be able to see the next station. when i get done with my trip, i do not want to have to walk 1 mile to drop the bike off. so the ports of

i know the gentleman said they see everybody riding a bike. i do not see everybody riding a bike. i see young people, the vast majority from 20 to 35 years old that are riding bikes. i do see people starting to buy small bikes to ride to their parking lot. a fella came in a wheelchair and missed his stop. he was talking to the driver and said i had to get off. this does not go all the way back fourth anymore. this guy who had a 20-minute medical appointment, he let everyone know, went down the rest of fourth street and turn down harrison and went another two blocks and went another block and a half before he could get off. there was no way he would make his appointment. harrison is a huge street. it takes forever to get across, there is a lot of congestion. he did not have anyone to push his chair. he was this late heading back down to the street. that one aspect -- there is a large segment of the population that have difficulty getting to where they're going. the muni isn't that division right now. there is no more cars on that street. maybe the city will make its money back for

i am sure you are familiar with annual bike to work day. it is great to talk about biking to work. we wanted to do more focused on viking to the store. it is not that difficult, actually, to put some bags on the back of your bike into a grocery shopping and do most of it by bicycle. specifically talking about how we are connecting the city with safe, comfortable bikeways, one thing we are doing is getting the word out. that is part of the reason we will go out to the business district that want to make sure that people now that businesses can request and get a free bike rack in front of their businesses. it is free. it will come out and assess the space, make sure that it is a good space. it can't be in of loading zone, there some things to look out there. what we see is that when we have safe routes to ride and a place to lock up, more people are biking. these are just a couple pictures of how we are really bringing the concept beyond of bicycling. the planning department will speak to this more eloquently than i. you see about two dozen on- street bike parking carouse. the one on

i have had about four different bikes in my lifetime. three of them were stolen from me. i have had the current one for 10 years and i have been very safe with my bike to prevent theft. but one of the ways we can ensure our bikes are safe from theft is to be able to bring them into our building so that when i'd bring them in, we use the city hall locker room to be able to store our bikes. for many, there is not like access and we want to be able to provide that access in the future for cyclists in san francisco. legislation will be asking the city attorney to draft a plan modeled after the one that exists in new york city that would either require commercial buildings to provide space, locker rooms for cycles, or to allow workers to bring bicycles into the building. while this is being drafted by the city attorney, i intend to be working with bike advocates as well as the building owners and managers association and related unions that do work to make sure we have a plan that can move forward and be successful to ensure we can create better safety from theft for bicycles
