bill karins -- >> the study has some holes in it, though. like one of the things they did, they took post steps into the study, electriciocutions after storm or carbon monoxide that has nothing to do with the storm. there are some holes in it. the heat yesterday, extremely hot in the desert southwest. 110 in phoenix. i know we had record highs in tucson. vegas was at 102. we were hot where we thought it would be, and it continues this morning. we're still very warm in those areas. at least down to the 70s in vegas. going to feel like 109 to 111 from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., excessive heat warning in effect. this has been extended through thursday for southern arizona. so this heat is not going anywhere, going away anytime soon. also, the middle of the country, one big headline late tonight and in early tomorrow morning. it is a severe weather outbreak. nebraska, iowa, northern kansas, this is the problem area. so, you know, the heat is one thing. the heat can be deadly. we don't have to deal with tornados in the west. at least there's that.

bill karins is here with more on the storms. that's incredible. i have no idea how strong the wind has to be to pick something up. >> like a chain off the back -- >> so maybe it got caught. >> something else was attached to it that went airborne and it literally is hanging. regardless, it is an incredible feat of strength. this was a big wind event. we call it a derecho, a weather word that describes a long lasting thunderstorm, has to go 250 miles and cause widespread wind damage. this was a huge one. went 1,000 miles, all of those blue dots show you where we had wind damage reports from kansas all the way to northern georgia. in the west, another warm day yesterday. little cooler for the coastal sections as has been the case of late. it doesn't look like we're going to see much in the way of any changes. so far this june, we haven't had a drop of rain in any of the major cities anywhere. five dry days in a row, make it six today. even when the pacific northwest is looking this dry, it is kind of -- at least get some showers every now and then, e

bill karins has your thursday forecast. talking about the winds there, huge freight train and then cars. granted they were empty, but still. >> yeah, you think how heavy they are. they have wide sides, you know, a lot of surface area for the wins to push up against and it happens a couple of times every year. it is still incredible just to picture the force and power. kansas is at it again this morning. wichita, kansas. this is what you wake up to. a severe thunderstorm with 60 to 80-mile-per-hour winds and ping-pong ball sized hail right over the top of you. so this complex in kansas has been moving across the state, and it looks like it is headed for eastern kansas shortly. severe weather today, if we have tornadoes, really bad storms, we have storms this morning, that storm complex will dive all the way down to the mississippi and alabama later on today. as far as the west is concerned, hot day yesterday from north texas to southern new mexico all the way through southern arizona. just continues. and it looks like it wil

. >>> all right, let's get the latest look at weather with my good friend, bill karins. >> a rough three days. >> have we seen enough tornadoes already? >> in the last three days, over 100 reports of at least tornadoes, and the severe weather continued last night through areas of the ohio valley, right through the mid-atlantic with some strong storms. all those blue dots show you the wind damage reports. there were a lot of them, especially around the pittsburgh area. the red triangles show you where we had the tornadoes, mostly out there in areas of south dakota, minnesota and a few there near nebraska. so, that line of storms did weaken, finally, overnight, brought a little light rain the last hour or two to new york city. that is now moving out. just light rain and much cooler conditions for you there in southern new england. most of the bad storms are over with in ohio. also just a soaking rain heading for the pittsburgh area. also right around marian and south of ft. wayne, indiana, a pretty good thunderstorm complex. but the real problems this morning are with flash flooding from m

we first, here is bill karins with a check on the forecast. bill, kind of warm and muggy in new york city this morning? i'm liking it. >> summer. >> also more severe weather in the midwest. we feel so bad and are thinking about our friends in the midwest this morning. >> nebraska and iowa can't catch a break. our mini heat wave on the east coast. we expect the heat. but the tornadoes we can deal without. another big one yesterday in nebraska and mostly over rural areas. this one was from pretty far away over the open field. it did move over the town of coal ridge, nebraska, the northern end of the town. we're still waiting to get the gaj reports as the sun comes up to see how bad it was. here is the summary from yesterday. upstate new york was hit hard, too. last night windstorms swept from buffalo across the new york state thruway. a lot of power outages. storms in iowa causing problems, wind damage with those. we'll watch some of these storms continuing to drift over areas like chicago, detroit, cleveland and even pittsburgh this morning. lat
