msnbc meteorologist bill karins here. let's get on the latest snow totals. >> getting some new updates and the emergency management office in philadelphia reported 15 inches. and stephanie abrams measured that in central park. and this tells us how much additional snow. the possibility of another 11 inches on top of it. we will get close to the historic 20 inch snowfall in the city. the area that will be crushed the worst, the area paralyzed the worst is the areas to the north and west. where we thought the higher terrain in between northern virginia and maryland. and an additional 20 to 30 inches from hagerstown to gettysburg, to shenandoah. let's talk about d.c. we need to get to the top of 18.7 inches. notice a lot of these were a long time. 1899, so 94 years since we had the 20 inch snowfall in washington, d.c. here's the latest radar. light snow in d.c., very heavy to the north of there. so d.c. gets a break now. it should fill back in though later this morning. >> thanks for staying on top of things. >>> in about 20

reis in central park and luke russert is in washington, d.c.,'s freedom plaza, but we begin with bill karinsre on the latest storm warnings. bill, what are you watching? >> well, thomas, getting all the new updates from the airports. they report every six hours and we're figuring out the numbers. reagan got an inch in the last six hours and a dry slot and they're only up to 15 inches of snow. if you look at the philadelphia airport they reported with 18 inches of snow, the closest big city now to the 20-inch mark. and new york city and d.c. are neck and neck, who would have guessed that 24 to 36 hours ago. both are reporting 15 inches of snow. still haven't heard the report from our friends in baltimore so we're waiting on that one. the other areas have got significant maybe historic snow, laguardia airport reporting in at 17 inches of snow. laguardia gets one more inch it will be the second biggest snowfall on record at laguardia airport. that airport observations have been around for a long time. central park has a longer ways to go because they had thunder snow in 2006 that got them up to

first to meteorologist bill karins. bill, where do things stand now?o blossom. they're getting bigger. we're getting more rain, more thunderstorms, even snow around kansas city. one area in nebraska got surprised last night, eight inches of snow. they weren't expecting that much. these will eventually combine and become our nor'easter. the southern one will bring us our severe weather later on today. and this is the one that's going to be our greatest concern. let's go in here first off and show you the enhanced risk. we think there could be isolated tornadoes this afternoon into this evening. from baton rouge to new orleans, jackson, also to the mobile area. this is the area we're going to be watching this evening. that's the first real big threat, possibly lightning threat with the storm. now let's talk about the storm with the storm because this is where it has the potential to be historic, especially this pink and brighter pink from the mountains through maryland near d.c. that's where we could get the two feet of snow. some could wind up with clos

msnbc meteorologist bill karins joins us now for the very latest on this weather. are we in the clear? are we finally seeing a break in all this? >> just depends what you call "the clear." a lot of people still have three feet of snow outside trying to figure out what they're going to do with all of it. the snow has stopped falling though, the winds have died down. the evening high tide will be even lower as we go throughout the next couple high tide cycles. the damage has been done. yes, they'll need to do some repairs, people will need to go in and see how much property damage there is. hopefully people without power can get that back in the next couple of days. wind gusts just a little bit of a problem on the cape. it is cold, one thing we had with the entire storm, it was good and bad. it was good because we didn't have a heavy, wet snow that stuck to things so when it was windy, we didn't see trees going down. we heard of very few power outages because of the snow. windchills are low because mostly it is just cold. we had a very cold air mass before this storm

bill karins is here.nd was this the record-breaking storm we expect snd. >> i'd say even and then some. especially when we add areas into that. when new york city crept in, that's when it becomes a historic storm. will likely go down as our third greatest snowstorm in the northeast region after the blizzard of january '96 which was similar to this one. and the superstorm of '93. so washington, d.c. at reagan airport, we ended up at 19.4 inches of snow. did not get into the 20-inch category. still the biggest snowfall we've had in 94 years in the nation's capital. that's still impressive. there's that .1 inch behind the storm. it falls in second place all time. of course everyone's outside right now and it's still cold windchill wise when trying to shuffle. here's the good news. over the next seven days here is the predicted snowfall. hardly anyone. and it's going to warm up. conditions are going to get very much almost like what we had before the storm hoop here's the five-day forecast in new york. it's n

meteorologist bill karins has been tracking the storm for us around the clock. he joins me now with the very latest on those conditions. bill, give us an update on what we're seeing happen. >> the most significant damage has been taking place along the jersey shore and delaware coastline. our high tide was expected to be very high, in the major category. in some cases, now we've gone past major to record-breaking territory. the odds of this storm becoming a $1 billion weather disaster have increased greatly. when you start to see pictures like this with water into the businesses along the seashore. this looks like a popular bar and restaurant and that water's going underneath that door into that restaurant. all of those businesses along the street there. there's another picture. a family dollar store in north wildwood. that water looks to be a foot to two feet up on the cars in the parking lot. it looks pretty flat. that water's going right through the stores, probably into that family dollar and also the cvs pharmacy. you get the picture. that's what's happening

let's get over to bill karins, nbc meteorologist. to the national weather service, the longest alert list is about high water concerns. what are your seeing? >> we skill have coastal flood warnings. we just got this video from the police department. you can see along the beaches no dow jones. they were washed out yesterday. high tide cycle this morning the water has been rushing in. these hows are up and elevated but you can't get in there to assess damage and clean up. that was southeast problems we're looking at. you can see the high tides were about an hour ago the jersey shore almost two hours ago. so we're past that. this evening's high tide cycle 7:00 to 8:00, couple inches lower than what we just did. that's also good. the storm itself is now south of nova scotia. sunny, clear. no problems whatsoever on the coast. winds are starting to die off. we're at 26 on block island. martha's vineyard has some gusty winds. wind chill values are starting to come up a little bit but still a cold morning for everyone out there. shovel is on
