let's get a check on your weather now with nbc meteorologist bill karins. crummy weather over the weekend. big travel week coming up. what can we expect? >> we'd like it easier than what we dealt with. the snow was widespread, about 55% of the country covered in snow as of yesterday. some of that will melt, though. a lot of people that did get snow may not get that white christmas. yesterday, saturday, we had the snowstorm that went through new england and started in wisconsin. this was kind of the scene in a lot of areas. we only about -- wasn't a huge storm, but a lot of people picked up a couple inches, then it got really cold behind it. so let's get into the temperatures. the story of the weekend was how cold it was with the negative 30, negative 40 wind chills in the plains. they are improving. bismarck is at 8. minneapolis negative 1, chicago one of the coldest spots at negative 21. houston and new orleans below freezing this morning. storm in the northwest with rain and snow, so grab the umbrella, cascades will get decent snow. so let's take you into

anyway, let's get to the weather now with nbc meteorologist bill karins. that was pretty funny. we just love brutal honesty, plain and simple. we mentioned the siberian express. we have all these terms for the cold air, but there's origins of where the air forms and where it comes from. usually our cold air comes from canada, but it can come from the arctic or alaska. in this case it's coming from siberia. we call it the siberian express. it's going to make it all the way down into the u.s. this is an example of next week. bismarck, these are the high temperatures in bismarck. not the wind chills or low temperatures, these are the high temperatures. temperature in chicago near 6 on wednesday, 11 on thursday. that means the actual morning lows will be in the negative numbers. reaches nashville about thursday and new york city thursday into friday. it's still going to be worse in the northern plains and great lakes than in the midatlantic. bismarck, the warmest they'll be in the next seven days, 8 degrees. how do they live like that, it's brutal. today's forecast, it is chilly in

meteorologist bill karins is here with all of the latest on the dangerous weather. bill. fought looking too good out there. >> not when it's cold. five states under wind chill advisories already. this isn't the main event which comes down 36 to 48 hours. so about two-and-a-half people under a wind chill advisory. already, we are seeing these numbers down to thing intive 20, negative 30 range. minneapolis a wind chill, negative 15. des moines, the negative numbers. all of that col air will head to the east by the time we get to thursday and friday. so for today's high, only 17 in chicago. enjoy the warmth in the east. because it's only going to get colder from here. that's the big weather story of the day, now, here's a closer look at your day ahead. well, these are high temperatures. these aren't even consideringing what the winds will do to it. you won't see a lot of snow out there today. >> that will come more in the days ihead. as far as the southern half of the country goes, we have rain from mobile into alabama. we will talk more about this cold blast coming up later
