picture let's bring in our chief meteorologist bill martin. as you read this picture, what do you see here from mount diablo. >> the first thing you mentioned, reports of the signs, and reports of visibility. the smoke is everywhere. now that's a sign that there's not a lot of wind. on a day like today where we have record heat, a heat advisory in the area, the air is sinking. it's coming from the upper atmosphere. there's not a lot of wind in the atmosphere. as we look at these picture, gasia mentioned it's on the south eastern side of mount diablo. from the base of the mountain, you can see what's happening. it's burning up the mountain. it's going to climb up the hill to look for oxygen. there's not a lot of roads in this area. there are road dirts. i've been up in the mountain, in this area, and there are not a lot of roads. and back to the wind, -- and back to the smoke, it's not heading down. and what they use is fuel sticks. they wet them in the morning and they weigh them. then in the evening they weigh them again. every stick of brush

for the very latest on the fire fighting conditions, let's go to chief meteorologist bill martin in the weather center. >> the good news, i keep stressing this. they have two of the three things, low humidity, high heat. that's bad, the one thing missing is wind. there's very little wind. for my money, the wind is everything on a fire like this. these fires as we've seen in the past, especially in california, especially out near the delta, especially in this area where it blows 20 to 35 miles per hour almost every night: when you don't have wind you don't have that blow torch situation where the fires get up in the crowns or the top of the trees. this fire from what i can tell appears to be right on the ground. it's consuming a lot of brush, a lot of wild oat. but we're not seeing a lot of big flames blowing over the top of those trees. record heat again today. many cities, we have a heat advisory that should have been dropped a couple of hours ago. that heat advisory has been extended till 8:00 this evening. interestingly enough, there's no red flag warning today. you see a drop right
