picture let's bring in our chief meteorologist bill martin. as you read this picture, what do you see here from mount diablo. >> the first thing you mentioned, reports of the signs, and reports of visibility. the smoke is everywhere. now that's a sign that there's not a lot of wind. on a day like today where we have record heat, a heat advisory in the area, the air is sinking. it's coming from the upper atmosphere. there's not a lot of wind in the atmosphere. as we look at these picture, gasia mentioned it's on the south eastern side of mount diablo. from the base of the mountain, you can see what's happening. it's burning up the mountain. it's going to climb up the hill to look for oxygen. there's not a lot of roads in this area. there are road dirts. i've been up in the mountain, in this area, and there are not a lot of roads. and back to the wind, -- and back to the smoke, it's not heading down. and what they use is fuel sticks. they wet them in the morning and they weigh them. then in the evening they weigh them again. every stick of brush

what do you think, bill martin? >> reporter: somewhere it could pop to 107. more temperatures over 100 degrees. tomorrow will be higher than we saw today with lots of low 100. what's unusual about this weather pattern is you look at the current temperature footprint. this isn't a summer pattern. this is a fall pattern. let's take san francisco and concord to get into a little bit closer. look at the difference in temperature between the two. it's 10 degrees spread between oakland, between concord and san francisco. this is more reminiscent of the fall. a temperature spread of just 10egrees because the upper level winds are in a dynamic pattern. at the end of the week, things will change rapidly. foth will come back but right now it is very warm. coast side tomorrow we'll see 80s inland in the upper 105, 106 degree range. a very hot one. a heat advisory in effect tomorrow and a spare the air day. i'll have your details in a minute. >>> you can find the forecast for the area where you live along with weather alerts by going to ktvu.com and clicking on the weath

let's check in with our chief meteorologist bill martin. you were talking about those temperatures, 120 degrees. >> yeah, and it's all connected. the weather, the ocean, and temperatures. right off the west coast, we have something like this, it's a trough. this is a jet stream. when that happens, you get a drift. we're connected, the facts that we're below average makes them for sure above average. in the west coast things have been mild. here's how the temperatures came in today. temperatures still below the average. a little warmer than yesterday but still below the average. as a as a matter of fact, well, yesterday and today very similar. the same fog cover when you woke up. the same burn off. that's why we got a little warmer. july and august, don't worry about the day, just worry about the months. for several days this center has set up camp. for july, your summer, this has been here. this the is why temperatures have been cold and below the average. this is why there's so much fog at the coast. this is why the fire danger isn't that

here's our chief meteorologist bill martin. >> as we mentioned two days ago, there's going to be morecoming in here. there might be a sprinkle out. just indicating a change of seasons a little bit early. pacifica you had some fog about an hour ago. the fog is beginning to clear at the coast. the upshot on this is it's going to be certainly cooler around here. these are the highs from today. it's going to be cooler tomorrow, lots of mid-70s. the inversion is going to get broken up and the fog will be move up. i think we're going to see more sunshine the next couple of days. the bottom line is cool coast, mild inland. temperatures even in the central valley well below the average. so this weekend, this is a player. we've seen this all summer. actually all spring. this one is a little bit stronger. jet stream is getting stronger. transitioning into fall. the rest of us may be some drizzle. best day on the weekend for warmth will be sunday. sunday it'll start to clear out and it'll be a nice day. still below average temperatures. it's not a big deal. at least the computer model doesn't th

let's check in with bill martin, and the weather here has been pretty cool. >> it really has. along most of the bay area temperatures have being very cool that continues to your wednesday. we tkpw to our -- we go to our storm tracker and we see fog to kelly street. the fog is back at your doorstep tonight, you knew that. it is around in the morning and tomorrow just like today. if you had fog till 9:00 it'll be there until 9:00 tomorrow. along the coast, you will see some clearing. it actually has been very pleasant around many areas. it creates an inversion that traps the fog right at the coast and then gets some of the air quality back too, because it traps pollutants. this is what typically happens in the summer. this is what's happening this summer. that high has been replaced. and all that fog pushes into our area. it gives us good air quality but gives us some cooler daytime highs. these temperatures about what they were today. i think maybe a little cooler. but the variations are subtle. 75 in vallejo, 89 in clear lake. you have some mid-80s in antioch. these cities whe

our chief meteorologist bill martin has the forecast for the weekend. >> i'm blown away how quickly the weekend gets here. it's friday, i mean this week flew by. the weather hasn't been much different day-to-day, maybe that's the issue with me. very similar with the fog. let's go to san francisco out toward the ferry building, temperatures today where about where they were yesterday. temperatures tomorrow are going to be about the same. just a pattern that is not shifting very rapidly. what you have today is what you're going to have saturday, basically a little cooler and what you're going to have sunday. clouds in the morning, a pretty early burn off, hayward, freemont 10:00, 11:00. it'll be slightly cooler yesterday, but these are subtle changes. coastal fog is one heck of a constant. it will not be going away very soon. there might be some burn off spots, but this low pressure center is going to ensure that the fog is a player not this weekend, just this weekend but right into next week as well. so we'll look at the fog forecast tomorrow morning. there it is. you can see that's the

for the very latest on the fire fighting conditions, let's go to chief meteorologist bill martin in the weather center. >> the good news, i keep stressing this. they have two of the three things, low humidity, high heat. that's bad, the one thing missing is wind. there's very little wind. for my money, the wind is everything on a fire like this. these fires as we've seen in the past, especially in california, especially out near the delta, especially in this area where it blows 20 to 35 miles per hour almost every night: when you don't have wind you don't have that blow torch situation where the fires get up in the crowns or the top of the trees. this fire from what i can tell appears to be right on the ground. it's consuming a lot of brush, a lot of wild oat. but we're not seeing a lot of big flames blowing over the top of those trees. record heat again today. many cities, we have a heat advisory that should have been dropped a couple of hours ago. that heat advisory has been extended till 8:00 this evening. interestingly enough, there's no red flag warning today. you see a drop right
