bill richardson, former u.s. ambassador to the united nations. jer jeffrey blish and kay bailey hutchison. jeffrey, starting with you. on the issue in australia, the specific issue here that apparently caused the difficult phone conversation i think is something that's not familiar to many americans, certainly it wasn't on our political radar. if you could talk us through the issue here. as i understand it, you have got a deal that the obama administration struck where they would take -- australia would take refugees from central america that the u.s. has been holding and in exchange the u.s. takes refugees from the pacific that australia has been holding? is that the basis of what was going on here? >> yeah. i think that's part of it. the idea is that in australia they have had a large number of refugees coming in from southeast asia and the middle east. they've been processing them on some islands and wanted to make sure they didn't take all of them in australia, if they could share them with partners. it's something allies do frequently. when

ambassador bill richardson. i want to start with you, close to the action and i know you have new reporting on the immigration ban. what can you tell us? >> well, good evening, ari, what we know at this point is that the white house is looking at its options, and the one concern president trump has expressed about keeping up this court battle, not only has he been giving some setbacks, couple of defeats, but the time that it takes and so that process suggests that the president wants to pivot and do something that could include a new executive order. but all of these are on the possibilities list. nothing set in stone yet no firm guidance on what the president will do when he is back in washington this week. accept to say a certain urgency about this, an important priority for the president, the white house feels very strongly that he has the authority to set limitations about non-u.s. citizens coming into the country. they with win this. the setbacks at the court at the federal level have been certainly politic

bill richardson, former governor of n new mexico, former u.s. energy secretary and former u.s. am bass ambassador to the u.n. you've also traveled to north korea. in your view did the president's words of sporting japan send a strong enough message to north korea? >> yes, i think it was the appropriate message. it was measured. it did not overreact. north korea was testing the new administration. okay, u.s., what are you going to do? i think the president's statement saying he stands behind his ally, japan, probably should have mentioned south korea, but doesn't talk about what the u.s. might do. the national security adviser calling the south korean, that makes sense, too. so it keeps the options on the table on a policy that i think needs a new look by this administration. yes, we need to get the chinese more involved. they don't help us with north korea. yes, we need to probably develop that ballistic missile system with our allies in asia. yes, we need to reassure our allies that we're behind them, but really this policy of strategic patience that we've had has borne few re

and former new mexico governor, bill richardson. governor, under these new sanctions, up to two dozen iranian people and companies will be penalized. why didn't the u.s. go to the u.n. -- or go to the eu and say, hey, we need to push back on iran. let's work together so we can make them more stringent and more effective? >> well, these ballistic missile tests are a violation of the security consul at the u.n. i agree with president trump's policy on the sanctions. they're proportional. they're limited to individuals, to the ballistic missile test. i think that's positive. i just don't like the way it was done. it's a bluster, bombastic. we should now turn to our diplomats, the secretary of state, to talk to the foreign minister of iran. cool things down. you don't want to get into a playing by fire situation. >> i'm going to take that to mean you don't agree with how mike flynn came out at the white house podium during the briefing the other day and put iran on notice. do you have any idea what on notice means? >> well, i don't agre

. >> we always have former governor of new mexico, bill richardson. you spent quite a bit of time in the white house, not this particular white house. i know it's hard to talk about what goes on behind the scenes in this one. tell me in your experience if a high level adviser or the nsa frankly said something that was incorrect and maybe told the vp something that was incorrect and convinced sean spicer, the press secretary, if he did that, what sort of consequences normally would there be in place if it was found out that that was not true? >> well, there would be very severe consequences. i would think that the national security adviser would have to resign. i think what we're seeing here is a foreign policy, national security policy, in total disarray. the travel ban, damage control, of course there will be a plan b. this relationship with japan, damage control, it's a good summit. it's a very important u.s./japan relatiship that needs to be repaired and it's on its way. but lurking on all of this is this mistake that the president made in taking t

senator feinstein mentioned elliot richardson and bill ruckelshaus. they did the same. i knew them both as people of integrity. i know sally yates as a person of integrity. despite the presidents strong interest in implementing the muslim ban, as he promised to do in his campaign, ms. yates concluded as immigration executive order was not legally defensible. this was not a surprising conclusion. executive order discriminates by design. it's wrong, i believe it is illegal. several federal courts have already found that president trump order is very likely unconstitutional. but ms. yates willingness to defend the rule of law instead of defending president trump's political whims demonstrates exactly why having an independent attorney general is so important and why we have to be so careful. it's likely -- just like the next attorney general. understand what's happening here. i've been here with numerous administrations, republican and democratic. in one of my first roll call votes was for a republican attorney general, william french smith. i've been declared i would vote
