[video clip] >> title mine is very important. the 37 words which comprise the language of the amendment have proven powerful enough to change our society and provide opportunities in the classroom and on the athletic stage for countless young men and women. i am a pre-title 9 student- athletes. when i attended california state college at los angeles in the 60's, we were still a full decade away from the enactment of title 9. financial assistance was available for all the athletes in for the tennis players, but only for the men athletes and tennis players. two of the top tennis players at the time were attending college down the road from me. stan smith was on a full ride at usc. arthur ashe had a full scholarship at ucla. even though i was the best tennis player at cal state-l.a. and had won a title, i was receiving any financial assistance. i did have two jobs in. one of which was handing out gym e
