the ceo tells us why the next phone won't run on blackberry's operating system. ♪ emily: blackberry takeseating, shares slumped after the company posted a wider than expected loss and smartphone shipments hit their lowest level in eight years. the ceo says the worst is over. he is betting consumers will come back for a handset that runs on android operating system. i asked him why he is now working with google. john: the thing that always hurt us is lack of application ecosystem support. in working with google and able to put out blackberry know-how into the latest operating system, it should appeal to a lot of people, especially professionals and high-end consumers. emily: if you're high-security customers embrace the android phone, would you be convinced to stop selling the blackberry operating system phones? what would it take to do that? hn: that is a great question. first off, the blackberry is still the most secure phone in the market. we have a lot of high-end government users. we pledge to continue to support both that. we have a new release coming out in march of next year. that

shares of blackberry up 1.2%.ncing that its acquiring long-time competitor global technology in a $425 million cash deal. i spoke to john chen, the ceo of blackberry this morning. some interesting insights i think on the rationale behind this. good technology has been stronger in managing ios devices and john chen is trying to steer blackberry in the direction of not just being about blackberry devices but managing android and iphones as well. they're going to pick up on a number of customers, more than 6,000 customers along with good technology. 64% of the customers that good brought on board last quarter were on ios. that's good for them. >> the letter from good's ceo says good and blackberry have a long history. which obviously is the nice way to put it. to say they were bitter rivals is maybe even an understatement. they were taking out ad space in newspapers to slam the other company. just a few short years ago. >> i think there were lawsuits and what-not, too. but at the same time john chen very pragmatic he

the blackberry phone is the most secure phone on the market.ve a lot of high-end government users. we continue the support of that. we have a new report coming out in march of next year. that will provide another level of security certification. the government and the regulated industry customers will be taken care of. we will continue to develop security for the android space. there will be a time when the canomer will say they certify and we will switch them over. there is no particular timeline that we are comfortable. emily: we have to talk about revenue. belowid it would not fall $500 million and this quarter it came up short. how much shorter can it go? john chen: i made a statement today in the earnings call. uptick from the q2 volume. you could call it the bottom or whatever. that's what we expect to do. we should see some uptick. emily: you are always about potential or blackberry in cars. weekw with volkswagen this using software to change emission standards. apple is pushing ahead on its own car. what role you see with blackberry in

it was previously arrival of blackberry. blackberry were positive after announcing this acquisition then turned lower, closing down about 2.4%. what do you make of all this? >> it's clear a bird in the hand is worth more than two in the bush. good has been thinking about going public and some sources said the valuation could have been anywhere from 800 million to $1 billion. there was another company that made it out publically before good, a competitor that does something similar called mobile iron. if you look at what happens to mobile iron shares since its ipo, down about 65%. you look at the comparison. you think do i want to go through something like that? you take down your projection, your valuation and think maybe you should just take your business into a bigger distribution platform, a company like blackberry. what is funny about this is that the two companies had been bitter rivals. they had launched attack against each other and noted that in conference calls and letters today saying we get it, we have a long hist

people know i love my blackberry, but i love my tablet more than my blackberry.ould not work without it. why are we in a slump? is the pro meant to be something of, not a solution, obviously because it's a specialized product here. what is the solution to this slump we are seeing in sales for tablets? >> yeah. i think like you, everyone loves their tablets. the trouble is you haven't had a whole lot of innovation if you think about it over the last two or three years in the tablet market. the incremental utility from these new tablets is minimal to upgrade to a new tablet. that is a challenge they have. they need to figure out ways to increase the number of use cases what could happen as a way to potentially drive demand. we think ios 9 with the multitasking, productivity improvements could be a level not just for the high ipad but ipad mini and air across the board. >> we'll have more on ios 9 in the next hour. going back to amazon. their phone didn't do all that great. the kindle has been a success. what about their history with launching new consumer products
