joining us with more on the massive cleanup in new york city, blake mccoy. blake, things are starting to look a little better, but i know it is really cold this morning creating icy conditions. >> reporter: yeah, it is bitterly cold. this is a city that was virtually shut down yesterday. this morning, a lot of people are going back to school and work. and there is still a lot of snow on the ground. check out these big mountains of snow in times square. there's another one back there. if i walk over here, you can see -- look at the streets. they are still covered in snow. and another big mountain of snow and ice over there. that's because normally with the marked snowplows, it gets warm enough that this will melt away. that's not the case with this storm. the actual air temperature is 20 degrees and feels like single digits. so a lot of the snow is stuck around. you will want to wear snow boots heading out today. this is going to be a messier morning commute than a lot of people expect, even though the city didn't get as much snow as they were expecting with t

i'm going to take you first to blake mccoy. blake, what is it like out there? >> reporter: we are further inland. we are getting socked with snow. this is ridgewood, new jersey about an hour, 40 minutes rather, north of new york city. look how heavy the snow is coming down. i have been out here since 4:00 a.m. earlier, it was blowing, drifting snow. it's turned to wet, heavy snow, still blowing at us. believe it or not, these are road that is have been plowed. hasn't done much good but we have seen plows come through about every hour or so to keep the roads clear. thankfully, people are heeding the warnings to stay home. sometimes in the snowstorms we see kids out throwing snowballs and with sleds. not with this storm. people are staying inside. about the only activity we have seen in ridgewood, new jersey has been new jersey transit trains. they are running on a limited schedule. they are going to keep going as long as they can. stephanie? >> blake, if you get cold o there, my sister lives in ridgewood. you can head inside. the snow is letting up a bit. coming

joining us from ridgewood, new jersey, nbc news correspondent blake mccoy. blake, you're in one of the areas expected to get the h heaviest snowfall. i have seen you in worst, but that doesn't look good. >> reporter: you've seen me in worst, but we have a long day ahead of us, cal. they are expecting 18 inches here. this is where the storm is tracking worst right now. so that's why they sent us up in this area. you can see what people are waking up to or will be soon. we have about three to four inches of snow on the ground right now. schools are closed today, businesses are closed. that's not going to be a huge concern for people. the big concern for authorities here in new jersey is keeping people off of these roads since school is closed and businesses are closed, they don't really need to be out there for most people. so right now most people are heeding the warnings. it took us 20 minutes to get here from our hotel. the highways look okay, they have plows on the highways, but the side streets are just a mess in new jersey. most of them completely untouch

in ottawa, illinois, i'm blake mccoy, nbc news. >> all right.t of that where in the country those tornadoes hit, very vulnerable, part of it the season, kari, but that is a lot of damage there. >> yeah, and this is all because of a very strong cold front sweeping through the midwest. and it continues on its progression towards the mid atlantic states and the southeast. back behind us, a lot of very cold air and the severe weather situation is still unfolding. as i've seen over 200 reports of wind damage and some hail, we still have some of those severe thunderstorm warning and tornado watches in effect for parts of the southeast. but the good news is that a lot of these storms are weakening as they continue that progression across the southeast and we'll be keeping an eye on this. the good news, sam, it looks as if the squaw line is weakening. >> definitely something to keep an eye on. kari, thank you very much. >>> happening right now, crews scrambling to clean up dirt and debris from the base of the damage spillway at lake oroville. take a loo

blake mccoy is in the hard-hit town of naplate, illinois. blake?rter: yeah, small town but, man, did they get pounded by those storms overnight. one of the tornadoes ripped right through here. can you see the damage it caused. look at this on the ground. this is the siding of someone's home. whose home is anyone's guess because as you look street after street after street, just remarkable damage out here. there has been no one reported dead at this point in this town, so some very good news when you look at the dwef station. a man was killed after a tree fell over on him, a man am his 70s. i spoke to someone a street over whose house is totally destroyed. take a listen to what he had to say. >> this is 100 times worse than i saw last night. this is what i got. it wiped it out. now it will be years to rebuild. this doesn't happen overnight. >> reporter: back out here live. the national weather service hasn't yet said how powerful the tornado that struck this town was. you can see by the damage this was a very strong storm. the tree snapped. some sto

blake mccoy, you look freezing. you've been there all morning. walk us through the dangerous road condition, the crashes. what's going on out there? >> this is one of the places where the snow really is living up to its potential. it's 8 inches so far. it started at blowing snow. then it became thick, heavy, wet snow. right now it's more like little ice pellets. if i hold the microphone up, you might able to to hear what's hitting my face. sounds like rain drops but those are ice pellets. you want to know. roads. let he hop over here. this is a road that's been plowed here in downtown ridgewood, new jersey. they've been trying to keep up with the snow all day long. we've seen a lot of plows out here. the plow drivers have had the roads to themselves. this is what the road looks look when it hasn't been plowed. this is why these roads are so dangerous. a lot of neighborhoods are like this and the snow has been coming down so fast and heavy some parts of the day that even the roads that have been treated look like that after just about 30 minutes.

blake mccoy is in delphi, indiana, for us this morning.orning to you. ribbons have been placed all over town here in delphi, indiana. these are the girl's favorite colors, as the search for their killer intensifies here. 25 law enforcement agencies involved in the search, including the fbi. they've received more than 11,000 tips so far. many of the tips stem from this image that one of the girls was able to capture in her final moments before being killed along a popular hiking trail here in town. that still image, part of a video clip that police retrieved from her cell phone. i had a chance to visit the crime scene with one of the lead investigators who insist that even after three weeks, this case has not gone cold. >> i'm confident that we're going to find the monster that did this. i'm confident we will. >> reporter: what makes you so sure? a lot of crimes go unsolved. what makes you so sure this one will be solved? >> we can't allow this kind of evil to live amongst us. >> reporter: later this morning, here in delphi, one of the girl

nbc's blake mccoy is on the ground for us right now. he's in the hard-hit town of ottawa, illinois.t are you seeing there? >> reporter: ottawa is next to us. this is the small town next to it called naplate, illinois. you can see the devastation it caused as it ripped through overnight. the siding ripped off this home. what used to be a garage stood back here and residents are salvaging whatever they can from the remnants of it. a telephone pole was knocked into this house during the storm. if we walk, i'll show you the rest of the street. i'm going to have my photographer steve watch his head as we go through here. it is house after house that has been just shredded by the force of this tornado that came through. we're still waiting on an official strength of the tornado from the national weather service, but look at all this damage. look at that. a resident here told me that car was parked on the street. it was lifted up. it's now in the front yard. a woman who lives in this house, she lives on the second floor in an apartment, said, as that tornado came through couldn't make it t
