let's go to nbc's blayne alexander for more on this. welcome to you.what's been the reaction to drivers there in atlanta? >> reporter: well, alex, the answer that we're getting from experts is that we are now in recovery mode. it is better than what we saw earlier this week and it will take a week, possibly another two weeks before drivers can be confident before they will go to the pump and get gas. this is the scene at one gas station in metro, atlanta. it is certainly much more crowded now than it was earlier today, but this is one of the lucky stations here in atlanta. this is one of the stations that actually has gas, but in the state of georgia, about 45% of stations are completely out of gas and when you move further up north to d.c., that number jumps up about 80% or so, and experts do have advice for you if you're ready to go out this weekend, stop panicking. all week long, we have seen the scramble. >> i have been here now for an hour and 15 minutes and this is my fifth gas station. >> it's a panic. everyone's panicking just like the toilet p

blayne alexander has more. >> hello to you from what is a busy gas station. traffic has certainly picked up from earlier this morning. cars lining up in some cases three deep to get gas. but this is one of the lucky stations here in the state of georgia, when you consider that statewide outages are right at about 45%, 46%. that means about 46% of stations do not have gas. when you go up further north to d.c. that number jumps to about 81%. the experts i have been speaking with say essentially we're in recovery mode right now. of course, the colonel pipeline is back up and running but it's going to take another week, possibly two weeks before we see that trickle down to the pump where drivers can just pull into any gas station and trust that they'll be able to get the fuel they need. the other thing that i've been speaking with experts about is the question over whether this was a supply issue with the pipeline, if the issue was caused by the pipeline or more so people essentially panicking and going out and purchasing gas and they said because so many people

let's start with blayne alexander at hartsfield-jackson airport in atlanta. this is going to be the first time many americans have flown in more than a year. what do they need to know before heading to the airport? >> steph, the first thing they need to know is the wait is back. crowds are once again coming back to the airport. so the long tsa lines and tsa checkpoints, you can expect those to return so make sure to plan ahead. let's talk about the numbers. triple a is expecting some 37 million americans will travel at some point over memorial day weekend. in fact, tsa has already put out numbers for thursday. they processed about 1.85 million passengers through checkpoint. that's the highest number we've seen since the start of the pandemic so we're talking about a 60% boost from last year. a lot of traffic at the airports including here at the world's busiest. but the vast majority of people are actually going to be going by car. so that's part of the story. let's go to cal perry. cal? >> hey, blayne, from the air to trains to on the ground, one of the weak
