bob pisani. hey, bob >> hello, good morning happy tuesday, everybody this is what is so frustrating for investors. we had a 100-point swing in the s&p 500 yesterday and the s&p, 100-point swing, a notable down day, and what do we get? nothing. no follow through at all no clear trading pattern, no momentum one way or another. this makes it very difficult we twisted ourselves into pretzels yesterday, trying to explain the thinking of the trading community and yet today, it is like it didn't exist at all. so what happens today? as carl mentioned, energy makes a comeback well, it was flattish yesterday. all of the sort of cyclical stuff, reopening stuff, energy, materials, industrials, banks, they're all the stuff that is moving up, even reits which had a terrible day yesterday moves up try to explain this in terms of momentum or investor sentiment it is very difficult tech is flattish by the way. one thing that is moving and almost every single day is emerging markets the weak dollar is really helping these emerging markets that's been a classic relationship but it is very noticeable. here is the simple one to look at the largest emerging market etf, which is very heavily weighted towards asia and parts of china as well. this is the highest level since 2007 for this, 2007. remember that? that was the asian tigers, remember all that? i was there. most of you weren't. it was traumatic now you see the big moves up against. emerging markets is a big theme for 2021 in terms of the market risk, nothing really changed we talked about this yesterday we tore ourselves into pretzels trying to explain this concerns about the democrats controlling the senate, we'll get an answer to that pretty quickly. concerns about the slow vaccine rollout, concerns an imact on the econo the economy, and supporting earnings vague fears about inflation in the second half that recovering growth in the high debt levels would drive bond yields higher that's pretty far off. i just want to show you the earnings situation because the market is anticipating a second quarter reopening. and you can just see it in the numbers. there is the fourth quarter. 36 -- the s&p 500, the quarterly numbers, you see how it just creeps up and starts really popping in the second quarter, and the third quarter it really starts popping what does it all mean? they're talking about 30 to 35% earnings higher in 2021 than 2020 and the numbers would be record in terms of total dollar amounts. and those are just the actual numbers, the whisper numbers are much higher than this. the market is anticipating a major roll jou majma major rollout and there you see it in black and white. with the expectations this high, there is a lot of risk in the market strange decision, david mentioned this, about the new york stock exchange, reversing its delisting decision it had decided around new year's it was going to delist three china telecom companies. china mobile, china unicom and china telecom. they said they decided not to delist it. the only explanation was in light of further consultation with relevant regulatory authorities, i have tested them, they have declined to provide any further guidance on what their decision-making is but i think the answer probably here is that treasury was the one who promulgated the regulations at the request of the president, and it is not exactly clear whether companies should be delisted or not delisted i think it is probably clear that to the nyse it is not clear that those three companies should necessarily have been delisted a strange about face, carl, on that, but that seems to be the obvious explanation. a lot of room for interpretation and you see the bounce from the three companies and the nyse is happy not to antagonize a big listing partner, the chinese government, for any future listings carl, back to you. >> yeah. we'll be looking for some more background on that, bob. thanks bob pisani when we come back, we're going to get to cramer's investment themes for 2021. first, though, get a look at the bond report today, see how treasuries are faring this morning. yields on the rise across the board. ism manufacturing at the top of the hour in the uk, the pound, stabilizing, as prime minister johnson announces that third national lockdown last night due to covid, of course. and we'll finish with a look at the three-year chart of the dollar index you see what happened to the greenback over the past year or so we'll be right back. competition beat us, again. how? they have a better finance system than we do. i feel like they might have a better finance system than we do. workday. how do they make better decisions faster? workday. got to do something. workday! i think i got something. work... hey, rob, you're on mute. hello. bob pisani. hey, bob. >> and the dow is having a lot of problems today, carl, and that's because wall street can't quite figure out what kind of trend it wants to start following. remember in the earlier part of january, it was all about cyclical, all about energy, and all about banks, and material, and that kind of reversed in the last fow days. take a look at the sectors that we are seeing today. sudden you will the last few day, wall street wants growth and technology and that means china and china is the outstanding story of the year. it is far and away the biggest market gainer at the year. that is mchi at the top there. consumer discretionary and the banks and the energy market leaders later on, they're kind of lagging here and you can see the problem in the dow, all showing up in the dow, while the dow is underperforming today, because financial stocks, and energy stocks, in particular, if you put the dow up, the dow components, chevron, boeing, goldman, american express, visa, they're all waying on the markets, weighing on the dow as you can see here this is the opposite of what we saw just about a week ago, when the market leaders were all, the january leaders were all energy stocks, and bank stocks, and they're still the leaders for the month, so it is starting to flip around. and technology is now starting to come to the fore. semiconductors have been really strong for a while consumer staples generally the defensive names like consumer staples and utilities have been lagging throughout the month and again, do we want to buy technology and growth or cyclicals? that's what the market can't seem to decide the one thing it can absolutely decide, it loves apple as you know, average knows, reporting apple on wednesday and boy, the talk about this apple iphone super cycle i see numbers 240 million iphones may be sold in 2021, some people are getting 1250 i th-- 250 i think the record is 250. listen to jim. there's a lot of bullish expectations built in here and what is concerning is you make the expectations and then you sell on the day after. this is actually a genuine phenomena that has been happening in earnings season. >> we have about 15% of the s&p 500 that reported so far, i'm including november-ending quarters here, and of course, the beats are really high. 87% are beating but here's what is important, the average beat has been enormous. the average beat has been close to 20% overall that's really important. that's a big, big beat that we've been seeing here here's what's amazing. wells fargo noted that among the companies that have reported, next day, for those that have been beating, the average price is down almost 2%. wait a minute. they beat the numbers? and they are still down? that's a problem that is sell on the news, because the prices have run up, going into that. that could be a genuine issue for apple so i think jim is really on to something there as far as the quarter goes though, it's good. the numbers keep going up, this happened in the third quarter, the fourth quarter numbers keep going up and we were down, 10%, in the first of january and now fourth quarter is only down 8% that's a steady improvement. remember in the past it always used to go the other way same thing for the first quarter. and that's what we care about. we care about whether the earnings estimate will keep rising for the first and second and third quarters and that's where the big numbers are and the big expectations are and even here, it is getting a little bit better from january 1st to today, the estimates keep getting a little bit better and a little bit higher and with estimates this high, with multiples this high, 22.5 forward numbers, those numbers have to keep going up to meet the expectations >> a little concerned about these numbers though, in these price moves up ahead of the earnings. carl, back to you. >> yes, that's going to be a busy one, bobanks bob pisani. >>> go to break here time for the bond report this morning. take a look at how treasuries are doing. ten year did hit the lowest level in almost three weeks. across the atlantic, a key survey shows german business sentiment down more than expected this month. as lockdowns take their toll on europe's largest economy separately, the president la guard, will address the numbers. and "squawk on the street" is back in a moment we just had. the nfl gearing up for a super bowl ratings blockbuster brady going for his seventh ring after he and the buccaneers defeat the packers in the nfc championship the bucs will face mahomes and the defending champion chiefs after they beat the bills to win the afc title. jim, as for the ad market, we have got our first look at chipotle's first ad. doordash will be in there, too although budweiser is going to take a different stance for the first time in 37 years and give some of that money to help support recovery as we work through covid-19

bob redell is out there. bob? >> reporter: good morning. we're at the bay bridge toll plaza. i can tell you that the light morning commute is at the limit. the rain has stopped. we haven't seen rain for a few hours. but as you can see the flags behind me at the toll plaza building there is wind out here. take a listen to this. this is video of a big rig jack-knife that took place overnight around 10:00 last night on the lower deck of the bay bridge eastbound 80. what i was trying to get you to listen for was the wind, it was windy out there. chp does believe the wind was the primary factor, that it blew that big rig and caused it to lose control, blocking a few lanes of traffic in this wet weather. the driver is okay and they have since cleared this up. this is video from about 3:30 this morning, westbound 580 driving through castro valley. that's when we saw a significant amount of rain. like i said, we haven't seen the rain since. i show you this to give you the idea that the roads are wet out there. as you're well aware, the posted speed limit just because it says 65 miles an hour doesn't mean that you should necessarily go 65 miles an hour. that means you should be going 65 miles an hour as the conditions permit. so the roads are wet, just something to keep in mind as you're heading out to work this morning. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thanks so much, bob. you know, we're also keeping a close eye on the burn zones in the santa cruz mountains. 5,000 people were told to evacuate from the san mateo, santa cruz county border south through davenport. >> but not everyone left. kris sanchez is live this morning in scots valley. kris, how did those overnight hours go? >> reporter: well, you know, we're here at pg&e base camp where everybody is stationed overnight. right now there doesn't look to be a lot of power outages in the boulder creek, ben lomond mountain communities. we were expecting lots of heavy rain and wind here, but look what happened in the santa cruz mountains just above saratoga. several inc along highway 35 just before highway 9. but heavy rain is a concern in the mountain communities near the czu fire scar. this is video from overnight in boulder creek. now, the charred hillsides, barren of vegetation, are vulnerable to landslides, debris flows and flooding in this heavy rai

bob pisani has more. bob? >> good to see you, as always. flat-ish day, but we're getting a lot of guidance. quiet on 2021. and this is good news. kind of disappointing on their guidance they had some restructuring charges in there, but free cash flow is improving. the street loves that. that's the highest level since february a little over $11 for ge johnson and johnson was great. a modest beat but 2021 guidance well above expectations. that's what the street wants to hear that is an historic high for johnson and johnson. disappointed but beat due to provisions for credit losses that's not considered a high quality beat by the street they want to see more fundamental underlying people spending more it wasn't there and the downside overall, off to a good start on the fourth quarter there's almost 20% reporting here about 85 companies reporting, 85% and very wide amounts. the other day, close to 18% and now down to about 12% but much more than normal and that's what we need to continue seeing as for this crazy short selling game short covering gain we've been seeing here, the stocks most heavily shorted on the street getting a lot of activity today, including gamestop up again today. all of these stocks are below their intraday highs of yesterday but as you can see, they're all up today and their characteristic is they have heavy short positions here gamestop between 63 and 160 yesterday. near the highs for today bed, bath and beyond never moves. between $46. that was crazy, highest level in several years for that and you can see it's up again today. amc, tanger factory outlook. and irobot, all companies, characteristically, heavily shorted today. back to you. >> bob, thanks weird action for more on that, let's welcome stephanie link chief investment officer who's going to be with us for the hour stephanie, great to have you a couple of things i want to talk to you about. >> hi john >> i want to get into some of this weird stock action, maybe some of it short driven but first, the industrial earnings what was your takeaway >> yeah, and as bob said, free cash flow is the story it's the theme and they all positively surprised 3m, and much more organic growth expectations 3% driven by the consumer guidance was very solid. so a very good quarter for 3m and it's encouraging to see them making progress and then in terms of ge, that's the only thing we care about is free cash flow because of the leverage on the balance sheet. and i thought the guidance was good for operation margins on the industrial business, up 250 basis points or organic growth in the low single digits that would be a remarkable turn. the quality of earnings at ge is absolutely improv
