bob costa, i start with you, master of the campaign trail. are you surprised joe biden campaigning openly, nakedly, with his wife, both saying, hey, i'm may not be perfect but the guy to take on president trump. but he's still up on top looking stronger than ever? >> there's an abiding belief with the biden campaign that the younger voters that dominate the discussion on social media platforms don't always indicate what many of the older voters in the democratic party are seeking as a nominee. in a core argument places like south carolina, it is beating president trump in 2020, not necessarily having a candidate a champion for medicare for all. that core issue of electability may not be generating tons of interest and enthusiasm for vice president biden. as we have seen in democratic races sometimes being the seasoned hand is leading. >> sometimes we saw republicade fall in love and republicans fall in line but you see the democrats falling in line. he has trouble on historical grounds and he's not, you think about the rising coalition of the

. >> bob costa among the names you mentioned just a minute ago, people like larry kudlow fundamentallythe idea of tariffs and trade wars. is there anyone inside that white house, anyone inside his administration who can prevail upon the president and say, look, the economy is starting to turn down, we told you the trade war was a bad idea, back off? >> well, we're trying to nudge him toward a deal. a deal with president xi jinping that they think could somehow move the economy away from the trade wars. the challenge for people like kudlow inside of the white house is that there are other advisers, like peter navarro and people on the outside who are more populus nationalist conservatives who say that an economy war with china, not just a trade battle, is essential for the president's reelection. that a deal really isn't the goal for some allies, it's about fighting china and trying to bring the manufacturing base back to the united states even if there's no deal to be had. but the people who are more dovish like kudlow, they say the markets need to be reassured if you want to have the

so, bob costa, i'm hoping you can provide us some incite. >> we had the president telling women of colorgo back home. we had chance from ts making fa chants and the president supporting them and backing down. the president declared himself the chosen one yesterday, embracing king of israel, embracing second coming of god as complements. wanting to guy this. the next one is blame denmark. can you give us some insight from talking to aides, talking to people inside the white house, what's exactly going on right now? why has the president seemingly become even more volatile over the past three to four weeks? >> speaking to the president's confidante and top republicans who speak to him by phone or have visited him in new jersey when he was at bed minister, they say when you ask the question, what's really going on here with president trump, they say, if you step back and you talk to him, it's all about 2020. he has advisors inside the west wing giving him data that shows signs of a possible economic slowdown. he sees biden holding on to his lead in the polls and he's trying, they say, to ma

bob costa, it feels like missing our nose in front of our face, as this situation has been brewing, many from the rhetoric from the president. we are flat footed on domestic terror. >> this is a real challenge for the trump administration, the department of justice. what is their answer to the question how do you confront the rise of white nationalism in this country and not just white supremacist web sites, but this rip tide of white nationalism that's coursing through many social media sites, web sites, and what is the law enforcement response beyond just responding to incidents and another tragedy, you see this president's rhetoric is certainly fuelling anti-immigration discussions in this country, his racist tweets have fueled racism on several fronts. at the same time, policy wise, we do not see a clear response yet from this administration, whether it's the political appointees or not about white nationalism. >> so do you hear any concerns from the republicans on capitol hill on this, bob, off the record? >> privately, some republicans say they're reluctant to go after the white na
