after just four years at the helm, bob mcdonald has regned. the man who had the job before him again takes over the company as president, ceo and chairman. investors liked what they heard sending the dow component stock higher by 4% today at $81.88. so we're bringing back the former chief executive make p and g a better company and a better investment and does the strategy of bringing back the old boss ever work? >> reporter: proctor and gamble the largest consumer brand in the world, the maker of products we know and love like diapers, fabric softener and crest toothpaste replacing bob mcdonald with the former ceo. he ran the company from june of 2000 to june of 2009. he's not just a legend but his career is a material upon which harvard business school are case studies. it led its peers in terms of performance. >> one of the definitions that i use of leadership is the ability to continually transform the mission, the strategy, the organization, whatever needs to be transformed to keep pace with and stay ahead of the unrelenting change that i

when it comes to execution, i was initially no fan of bob mcdonald when he came to the job. t even though mcdonald had a terrific reputation as a brand manager, particularly in china, he was failing to take the tough action needed to insure his company has a place in the global world. in fact, at the beginning of last year, i put mcdonald on the "mad money" wall of shame because of his failure to deliver growth and the open rebellion of the analyst calls, they were an excruciating affair. last summer, he had some reorganizations that allowed proctor to take out $10 billion in costs. much of these savings came from trimming the fat that mcdonald's predecessor, a.g. laffly allowed to develop. in the mid-60s it appeared mcdonald hasn't been dealt the treasured hand that wall street thought laply had given him. there were many leaders and divisions to fall behind. the lag was followed by a worldwide boom. i wasn't dismissive in the not taking the actions that proctor needed. i didn't dismiss him. he didn't do it himself. he convinced me i should take him off the wall of shame bef

act mapp was concerned about sales growth and what was happening with bob mcdonald. there was a faltering movement of opportunity in china. that was a.g.lafley's great strengths. he got a restart in china. that's a great strength. a.g. lafley was very good at ru structuring. he came in, cut out like 17,000 jobs. >> is your sense, though, that, you know, some people say he contributed to what is arguably become an unwieldy structure? meaning it is a very big company? some say it needs more focus. that is one of bill ackman's big arguments. he wants innovation. ultimately, if that is the construct that a.g. lafley created, could you see him restructuring the firm and ek braing it up rather than rebuilding it? does that continue or does he shift gears? >> he can do it. i think he can come in and make a difference. in the second world war, generals patton, montgomery, churchill, they came back out of moth ball retirement to lead the cause to greater glory. in lafley's case, he stepped down in 2009 in july. guess what? in august of 2009, they had the biggest fall in sales

a.g.lafley will be returning to p&g replacing bob mcdonald who will retire last month. hen he left the company in 2009. he said the board called him days ago asking him to come back. mcdonald implemented a $10 billion restructuring program last year cutting costs and thousands of jobs. the last month, p&g reported weaker than expected third quarter sales. in a memo, mcdonald said he resigned out of concern he was becoming too much of a distraction. p&g stock rose 54%, but that underperformed rivals at 72% in the overall market. the s&p 500 was up 08%. compare that to lafley who served as ceo >> june 2000 to june 2009. p&g stock rose 79%. far overperforming its competitors and the s&p which dropped 30% over that period. and mcdonald's resignation comes amid calls from some investors for faster improvement on the company. the hedge fund manager owns 1% of the stock. in an interview, he said the company had stumbled under mcdonald's leadership. and in a statement to cnbc last night, ackman said, quote, a.g. a.g.lafley is one of the greatest ceos and we're delighted to have

but under bob mcdonald, the company's stock price has suffered oen a relative basis.y of 2009, p&g has seen a 54% rise, but it's now one of the laggards in terms of its peer group and its return is lack luster compared to the s&p. he took over at a difficult time when the company was struggling, it was post the financial crisis. consumers were not only tightening their spending, but there were cheaper, private label products out there and also increasing competition from some of the name brands. in addition, some are asking if lafley himself isn't at least partially at fault for some strategies that pre-dated mcdonald's tenure. meantime, analysts that i've spoken to are positive on the change. they said that they didn't expect it at this specific time, but they weren't really surprised it came. the stifel analyst i spoke to this morning, he has a hold on the stock. he said while the move is constructive, michelle, he is looking for the fundamentals to change. he's not going to change his rating at this time. >> it struck me. stock's up 54% under his tenure. it sounds
