bob redell is live in fremont with more on the high-tech cat and mouse game. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning to you. we've been able to follow on twitter. this story is about a man named joshua kauffman, a web and software developer out of oakland. in mid-march someone stole his macbook from his apartment. little did the thief know that every time he used the macbook he was being watched by kauffman. kauffman installed an app on his macbook that enabled him to track the location, record screen shots and take pictures using the webcam. so kauffman decided to have a little fun with this and started a blog called "this guy has my macbook." and on it he posted pictures of the thief. like the one with the thief asleep on the couch, unbeknownst that it's recording his nice sleeping habits there. there's another one of him shirtless in bed working on a computer with a caption posted by kauffman, i really don't want to know what this guy is doing with my macbook. there's screen shots of him logging on to his google account and deleting kauffman's settings

bob redell has more on what some are calling facebook fatigue. good morning, bob. >> good morning, laura. there is a website called inside facebook. it's a blogging and marketing research website. it's reporting that the actual website facebook saw a stu pendous decline. at the start of may the website records 155 million active users. by the end of the month, 149 million. that's a drop of 6 million people. that's quite significant. 1.5 million canadians dropped out as well as hundreds of thousands of more users in the uk, norway and russia. there's four possible reasons. these are speculative reasons. one is market saturation. a lot of these markets are tapped out. there aren't any more people that could be joining facebook. another is fatigue, people tired of the website. could be seasonal, a temporary dip, just like we see . facebook does not release its monthly traffic numbers. this website "inside facebook" came up with these numbers by analyzing advertising data. facebook is criticizing results. they say broad estimates. they say they are pl

bob redell is live in fremont to tell us more about it. >> reporter: good morning, laura.oshua kauffman is the guy who caught the thief of his macbook laptop. he happens to be a web and software developer out of oakland. it was in march that somebody stole his macbook from his apartment. little does this thief know that joshua was tracking him, watching him, watching what he was doing with his computer the entire time because joshua had preinstalled an application called hidden that let him do this so joshua decided to have a little fun with this. he started blogging about it, naming the blog "this guy has my macbook." and he posted pictures of the alleged thief sleeping on the couch next to my macbook. unbeknownst that the webcam was rolling. he's got a shot of the guy in his bed with his macbook with no shirt on and joshua's caption is i really don't want to know what this guy is doing with my macbook. he's got screen shots of the thief logging onto his google account. even one shot of the thief deleting joshua's macbook settings. he's got other photos of him. even a pho

starting to calm down tonight, this after a very rough start to the morning as seen from our own bob redell at santa cruz. this was a pro-am soccer tournament trying to get under way. the wind and rain caused problems for some of the outdoor tents outside. in santa cruz, this evening we got sunny breaks. look at that. san jose, a nice rainbow off to the east of downtown san jose. this is what was left of the rain. changed over to scattered showers and pretty sights like that around the santa clara valley. record-breaking totals. oakland, almost an inch and a half of rain. tops, though, ben loaman. and notice we still have areas of lighter rain falling. and this is the transition that we'll see for sunday. the showers offshore starting to move inland. for tomorrow morning, i think we'll see hilltop showers and then as we go through the day, we'll still see a chance possibly of some thundershowers in the mix as well. so round two coming up tomorrow. we'll let you know how it's going to affect you hour by hour in the full forecast. >>> today's wet weather put a crimp in a lot of people's plans

this morning, bob redell is live with a unique look at the green lantern. good morning. y, a big happy birthday to bob. >> thank you very much. i appreciate that. over the hill. here at the cartoon art museum, lucky me. tonight, we are going to have a green tie event for the new exhibit featuring original artwork from the green lantern. this is from 1944. i bring it up to show you how old the comic is. the green lantern has been around for 70 years, only outlasted by superman, batman, wonder woman. as you look at the panels you can see how they used to make comics compared to how they do it today. good morning to you. i'm looking at this panel from 1981. the one thing that strikes me is that. >> back in the day, everything was cut and paes sted. >> some guy had to cut that up. ten years later, we switched to computer production. you don't think about it anymore. >> i'm curious, do you think computer production compared to kut and paste has improved or taken away? >> it's another tool. it's something that artists, you know, can take or leave as they choose. a lot of them a

bob redell joins us live from palo alto to tell us. very unique. good mornings, bob. >> reporter: good morning. silicon valley home to the giants of technology industry have bucked that trend, they have defied the economic gravity is pulling down home prices in other california towns. here in places like palo alto, home prices are up significantly year over year. i want to throw numbers on the screen. the median price of a home in palo alto home to facebook of course is now more than $1.6 million. that's a jump of 20% from may of 2010 to may of this year. cupertino, home to apple up 12%. saratoga up almost 5%, mountain view up 3%. what gives? well, you hear me mention these tech companies. we're tualking about the surge n ipos and the people who work at the tech firms, live in these communities are now rich or at least richer and therefore able to afford more home and in turn pushing up the prices in these  communities. bloomberg news reports that it's even an apparent just looking at who is touring the homes, fewer 50-year-olds, more 30 something'

"today's" bob redell has more about facebook fatigue. >> inside facebook, this is a blogging and marketing research website, reporting that facebook itself, the website saw stupendous decline in numbers. particularly staunch in the united states. starting in may 155 million active users. by the end of the month, 149 million. for those of you keeping score, that's a drop of around 6 million people. 1.5 million canadians dropped out as well as hundreds of thousands of more users in the uk, norway and russia. and the rate of growth is down as well. it only added 11.8 million users worldwide, facebook that is. i say only, because if you look at the numbers in the past march 2010 to march of this year, the website facebook was adding 20 million new users a month. you can see a decline in growth. there's four possible reasons it's happening, one, just market saturation. there aren't more people to tap. one could be fatigue, people are tired of facebook. it could be seasonal, a temporary dip, just like we see a spike in gas prices or decline in gas prices, we could see the same right now with peo
