"today in the bay's" bob redell live at lick observatory on "today in the bay." happy you're not wearing a hard hat. >> i've got my fingers crossed. the comet discovered not hitting earth any time soon. what's going on nasa on the search of other meteor showers. they know about 60 of them across the night sky. they believe there are about 300 more. for roughly the past year they set up three video camera monitoring stations monitoring skies of california, like this one at lick observatory. they have been looking for meteor showers. on february 4th, one caught an image on the screen. it shows a streak of light across the sci. they found six streaks of light that night. that's trail dust from a previously unknown comet significant for two reasons. one, that comet was previously unknown. two, it is potentially hazardous to us earthlings. this doctor made the discovery. first, your reaction seeing the image, aha. >> i was very surprised to see this. i was not expecting to pick any of these showers up. this shower was not there last year. it was just this year it show

bob redell is out live in front of ebay.bob. >> reporter: yeah, they are hiring big time. good morning to you, scott. hiring like it's 1999. that's how one headline labels the job situation in silicon valley. if you look at ebay it seems that way. the online auctioneer has 600 openings, apple 600, google 580. the the unemployment rate for tech professionals is just 3.3%. that's a drop of two points from january. the white house is impressed, so much so that the president's council on jobs flew out to silicon valley to pick the brains of leaders to figure out how they can spread that kind of job growth throughout the country. the growth in tech in fueling hiring in other industries. the computer engineers, they need a place to live, a place to eat, that's why you see thousands of jobs added in businesses like restaurants and construction, talking about here in the south bay. however, in spite of what i told you, the unemployment rate itself in the south bay is not so good. in june it was 10.5%, that was up from 9.9% in may. w

"today in the bay's" bob redell is live outside of city hall.his means mayor lee will have a promise he made when he took that job. >> reporter: yes. he pledged not to run for a full term when he was appointed interim mayor in january. in about 3 1/2 hours inside the department of elections in the building behind me in city hall interim mayor ed lee is expected to break that promise, file papers and announce his candidacy, ending weeks of speculation of will he or won't he. in an interview lee acknowledged that thinks back pedalling might be hard for people but he believes he is doing what is best for the city. at least one city supervisor is not happy with his change of heart, noting that's why she voted to appoint lee as interim mayor, because he promised not to run, a vote she now appears c 1:regret. lee says he will sit down with the supervisors who don't agree with this decision and try to explain himself. he might be asked to do that tonight at the castro theater with the nine other candidates, some of whom are on the board of supervisors.
