bob redell is live in san jose where the 15-year-old was taken with serious burns. good morning, bob. >> good morning. yes, he is being treated right now here at valley medical center. his condition unknown. just that he was burned as you mentioned, that the burns were significant, that a regular hospital would not do, that he needed a burn center like the one here at valley med. and that he needed that medical attention as soon as possible. hence, the need for the med flight that whisked him away, the helicopter that whisked him away quickly from concord to the med center here in san jose. this boy caught fire as he was being dropped off at the b.a.r.t. station. according to b.a.r.t. police he met up earlier with a man to help fix his car. apparently he didn't know this man. they were strangers. it's not known why and how a 15-year-old boy would come across an adult man for auto repair. in the process of fixing this car the teen spilled gasoline on his shirt. as the adult was driving him to b.a.r.t. he lit a cigarette, there was enough for the vapors on boy's clothe

"today in the bay's" bob redell live in san francisco. bob, you just spoke with police officers there? >> reporter: good morning to you, scott. yes, this attack taking place around so:40 last night behind me on the edge of golden gate park over the picnic table is. police shot and kill one of the pit bulls, the other did get away and they have been looking for it ever since. we've seen at least one patrol, sfpd in a jeep off-road throughout the park, one of the patrols here. there's two more. so a total of three or four looking for this pit bulldog. officers say, it's hard to find a dog that small in an area so large. they've not been able to find it yet. again, this happened around 10:40 last flight. you have two men who live here in the park, one man, the owner of two pit bulls, had to run an errand, he asked his friend to watch the dogs while he went away. sfpd says the two dogs turned on the man, biting him, mauling him badly, so badly that he's in the hospital, nonlife threatening injuries but serious enough the bite wounds, he had to

"today in the bay's" bob redell live at the apartment complex where we're expecting to learn a lot moreut what led up to the shooting. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning, laura and scott. probation search that took place here at the park sierra park complex was related to a crime that took place on b.a.r.t. property. the officers involved in the search knew that the person on probation wasn't going to be home but they weren't sure if there was anyone else in that person's unit. so when they made entry just before 2:00 yesterday afternoon, that's why b.a.r.t. officer thomas smith and several other of his colleagues were wearing bulletproof vests. it's also why they kicked down the door and had guns drawn. during that entry and the search of the apartment, one of smith's colleagues, a ten-year veteran of the b.a.r.t. police force, fired his gun. that bullet found its way past smith's bulletproof vest, near his armpit as he had his weapon drawn, and it entered his body, killing him. smith rushed to eden medical center where he was eventually declared dead. several members of the

bob redell is live, crews checking for hot spots. the fire is out, correct? >> reporter: it is. it has been for some time. good morning to you. we're just east of the village shopping center. we're looking at the corte madera wildlife sanctuary, pretty dark but that's what is there. you see the fire trucks, they are making sure that fire you were talking about does not start back up. it's a fire you can see in this video was going pretty good overnight. it started around 10:45, burned through 5 1/2 acres. that's a new number we. go also caused several propane tanks to explode. they don't know the actual cause, they hope to have that later today once the sun comes up. this is suspicious because they do know it started in a homeless encampment in the marsh, hence, the reason why there are propane tanks on site. one resident of the am kap was on site. was not hurt. it's not clear whether or not that person had anything to do with this fire. what is noteworthy, about with ten hours before this fire started, this was yesterday afternoon, police here did a sweep of the encampment, for

bob redell joins us from lexington reservoir with a look at the low water levels across the bay area.r: well, here at the lexington reservoir, good morning to you there, scott, they are capacity t reservoir at 30%. you're getting a better sense as sunlight is starting to come up. that's one reason why tonight the board of directors with the water district will be considering a request that they would like to put on customers to ask them to cut back. it should be noted the district cannot force the customers to do that but can ask and that's something they are going to do because these levels are so low. the reservoir at 30%, look that the, that's parched ground with the cracks, that's also in san jose. the almaden reservoir south of san jose. it's at 3% of capacity. the district was not going to consider this voluntary reduction until the spring but because there has been so little rain, because things have been so dry they decided to move it up for consideration tonight. the board expected to ask customers to cut back by 10%. one customer we spoke with doesn't think that's enough. >>

bob redell joins us at the scene with new details on this investigation. first homicide, 2014 two days into the new year. homicide detectives are there where you see the scene is lit in the driveway where the man is dead. we're waiting for the coroner to come out to move the body to see if he has i.d. on him to try to figure out who this person s. based on what residents told police they heard this man get shot, they heard gun shots, heard a car driving off. for whatever reason no one bothered to call 911. it wasn't until around 1:30 this morning, so 45 to 60 minutes later someone driving by called 911 to report that this man was lying in that driveway a few houses down from where we're at. this is on the 1600 block of east san antonio. the man, an adult, possibly in his 20s shot at least once, not responsive. paramedics tried to revive him. he ended up being pronounced dead on the scene. police as i mentioned have not touched the body. they are waiting for the coroner. police tell us that people who live here are cooperative, they did go around door to do

bob redell is live at the scene with an update to the investigation. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning. in the past 30 minutes the homicide detective with san jose police have arrived and focusing on a driveway a couple houses down here on the 1600 block of east san antonio where a man is lying dead. someone driving by around 1:30 this morning called 911 to report that he was in that driveway when the paramedics arrived he was unresponsive. they performed cpr. they were not able to revive him. he was pronounced dead making him the first person to be murdered in san jose in this new year, 2014. what make this is story a little odd is that residents actually heard gun shots about an hour to 45 minutes prior to that 911 call, they also heard a car driving off but for whatever reason, no one bothered to call 911. police have been talking to people around here, no one seems to know this man. they don't know why he was shot and killed and of course they don't have a suspect as of yet. so what they have been doing, they tell us, people are being coo

bob redell is live in san jose. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. bryan stow who used to patrol these streets as a paramedic is now home. he has been for some time on an extremely slow recovery from his attack at dodger stadium almost three years ago. an attack that left him brain damaged and permanently disabled. in a few hours the two men accused of beating him will be before a judge in a los angeles courtroom for what will be a preliminary hearing in their trial. this means that for the first time we will hear about the evidence that the prosecution plans to present against louis sanchez and marvin norwood, the two dodgers fan who is are charged with felony assault and mayhem in their alleged attack against stow who was attending that ball game on opening day in 2011 as a giants fan. both men have pled not guilty to their charges. those court appearances are scheduled for later this morning, one at 8:00, the other at 8:30. bob redell, "today in the bay." >> police are asking for help solving a seven-year-old murder. alberto was killed seven years

bob redell, "today in the bay." >> good thing they made it out. thanks so much. >> growing concern this morning over foster farms chicken after cockroaches were found in a california plant. this is not the first time. the usda is shutting down the plant in the central valley town of livingston, that's between merced and modesto. it employs 3500 people. inspectors say this is the fifth time they spotted the pests since september. foster farms admits to the problem and saysed maintains an ongoing pest control program. livingston plant along with two others in california were being investigated for a salmonella outbreak. some customers say they will be buying other brands until foster farms is given the all clear. >> it's disheartening to see a brand like foster chicken is not controlling the sanitary requirements of the processing. it's just you know, unacceptable. >> as of right now there is no recall for the chicken from that plant. foster farms rehe'sed this statement saying, quote, a single incident is not acceptable and we are committed to a ze

"today in the bay's" bob redell is investigating this morning. he's gathering new information at the apartment complex where the officer was shot. we'll check in with him later in the newscast. >>> the investigation into officer smith's death will take a hard look at procedures by b.a.r.t. police in the moments before that shooting. the b.a.r.t. police department did enact reforms in the wake of the controversial shooting of the unarmed passenger, oscar grant, on a b.a.r.t. platform 2009. last month an independent auditor praised the police department's progress in improving its officer accountability and training. now, attorney john burriss represented grant's family. he's been monitoring reforms made in the department. he believes procedures will, once again, be the focus of the current investigation into officer smith's death. >> i know that b.a.r.t. police officers go to the academy. i expect the training was proper. that would mean somewhere else there was a breakdown and that's what the investigation will determine. >> we will continue cove

bob redell joins us from the lexington reservoir with a look at the low water levels across the bay area. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. the santa clara valley water district can't force its water customers here to cut back on their water use but the board can certainly ask. and that's what the board is expected to do at its meeting tonight because the water levels are low. the lexington reservoir behind me is at 30% capacity. this is video of the almaden reservoir south of san jose, you can see the soil there is parched, cracked. that reservoir is at just 3% capacity. the district wasn't going to consider this voluntary reduction until spring but because there has been so little rain they decided to move it up for consideration tonight. the board expected to ask its customers to cut back by 10%. that's 10% which is actually on the low side when you consider that other bay area water districts and the governor are requesting 20%. >> our plan looks at the water supply that we have available, all our different water sources, and with those calculations at this

bob redell is live at the scene. bob, we're learning several people probably forced out of their homes. >> reporter: yes. initially we're hearing it could be 24, two dozen along those lines. got done speaking with red cross. they know of seven people who decided to stay in their units here in this building. even though there is no power and gas. it's for the people who live in the two units that burned you see in the corner. we know they got out. it's possible that they made other arrangements and they don't need the red cross. this fire started around quart tear two this morning in the upper unit that you are looking at. the fire department believes it started in the kitchen, it's not suspicious. that's not their gut right now. appears accidental. and in the fire destroyed that unit and spread next door causing heavy damage there. the other units, we spoke to one resident who said there is no smoke or water damage, he decided to stay in spite of what was a frightening experience last night. >> people asking, everybod

bob redell got to the scene and bob, we're learning about two dozen people forced from their homes? >> reporter: probably more than that. that full count hasn't been made. good morning to you. right now red cross arrived in the past five minutes and what they are doing is knocking on the doors of the units in this building, if you look in the top corner unit, that is the unit that caught fire, around 1:45 this morning. when they arrived it was fully involved. this was a two-alarm fire. they don't believe it's suspicious. one possibility this might have started in the kitchen. everyone did get out okay but as a result that unit was destroyed and then there are five units attached that shared a common wall. they either suffered smoke or water damage. so there is also no power and gas on so you've got five unites, six now, where that are uninhabitable. that could be as many as 24 people who are going to need shelter. so that's why the red cross has arrived, again two-alarm fire at this apartment complex on cadillac, clearly the fire is out. they don't believe this is suspicious. one un
